Walked from Whitchurch High Street, down Church Lane and up steep winding lane. Hop over gate and in field on right. Unparalleled views of Bristol. | hillbagger91 | 06/09/2023 |
Parked on Court Farm Road near junction with Tanorth Road - E. along Tanorth Road to Maes Knoll fingerpost & up RoW to point where it joins lane (596667) - Continued along W. side of hedge to double gates in field corner & then WNW along S. side of hedge to double gates in field corner - Over gate & a short descent to the UA Top by bwf. | gerrybowes | 01/08/2023 |
Parked in lane to SSE and entered field above the CoHP. Walked around the field margins to gate above the water trough. Then downhill a bit more to the unmarked boundary. Exited field onto road more directly which had a Private Keep Out sign, or words to that effect. I only saw the sign after the event. | Minto | 07/07/2023 |
At the end of a walk along the Community Forest Path from Clifton Suspension Bridge to East Dundry, heading back to Hengrove via a quick detour to this 'top' from the east. Nice views, but these halfway-down-the-hill county tops are a bit rubbish aren't they? | thesweetcheat | 11/02/2023 |
Parked at ST 59618 66697. There is a handy gate opposite, if you go to the left side of the fence there is a gate at the top of the field which take you to the summit field, go a bit further downhill, check the GPS and bingo you have conquered Bristol. | DC11main | 19/01/2023 |
With E. Parked in housing estate on Tanorth Road where a signpost shows 'Public footpath Maes Knoll'. Uphill on footpath then off path through (open) gate across field to hp near fence corner/animal water trough. Always find it confusing when hp not actually the top of hill but UA boundary line on OS map clearly goes walkabout around here. Saw no-one on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Good views to Bristol. | Beeliner | 03/07/2022 |
Parked in the residential street at the bottom of the hill and walked back up East Dundry Road. Accessed field by footpath. Over gate into top field then followed hedge downhill. Over another gate and water trough then a bit further downhill to the grid ref. I was in full view of the farm but no-one about. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 14/01/2022 |
If this county top was described in two words, then it would be 'Pure Evil'. I'm glad that I did this one so early, and I don't blame my cousin for not doing it either. I will definitely not be returning to Bristol's real Ceremonial County Top Summit ever again in my life. | DavidHiner | 29/07/2021 |
Not easy to see exactly where the HP is, if you run around the whole area, can it count? | Richard Dukes | 15/05/2021 |
From lane to south. Good place to admire the fair city of Bristol. | Wycombe Wanderer | 30/07/2020 |
Parked opposite the footpath on Tanorth road lead up the hill, the HP is actually in a private field through a couple of gates on the right. 20 mins and just under a mile return. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 28/06/2020 |
Drove SW down Dundry Road East from Whitchurch. Lots of fly tipping. Found just enough space to park off road at ST 59575 66653. Returned down lane on foot and climbed over first gate on left following field boundary to field corner and high point. One of few hills I have climbed where I end up lower at the summit than where I started. | mntainman | 17/01/2020 |
Parked in a small layby at 59573 66657 and walked back down the hill a little, over a gate, along field margin and over a gate to Bristol HP then back to road and fp to Maes Knoll. Great views of Bristol. | clivevilla | 10/10/2018 |
Parked in Tanorth Road, found the footpath and got thoroughly soaked tracking down the high point across two diagonally ascending fields from the footpath. | Nick Down1 | 24/08/2018 |
From footpath on Tanorth Road. | PGCE | 27/05/2018 |
Parked in Hennessy Cose and walked round corner into Tanorth Rd. The fp sign has gone although the pole remains. Up into fields and over a couple of easy gates to the hp. Fine views over Bristol. Otherwise, undistinguished but at least no litter this way. | Campbell Singer | 12/12/2017 |
Parked up by Dundry Primary School and enjoyed views over Bristol as I made my way to the top of Dundry Hill. Didn't hang around as the rubbish and smell was horrible. Made my way back to the car via Maes Knoll. | Gerry the Ranger | 08/09/2017 |
Initially approached on the lane from the Dundry Marilyn - this is a mistake as there's absolutely nowhere to park. You have to park in the housing to the north of the slope and walk up. | Richard | 06/05/2017 |
Walked from house, this is generally a weekly walk, route taken up through manor woods | kineta | 23/04/2017 |
Parked in housing estate, up fly tip alley then followed hedge along top of field. No the best on a wet afternoon. | rhalstead | 03/09/2016 |
Parked close to T junction north of Norton Malreward at 602654. Over Maes Knoll to trig and high point. Went through gate on north side of lane that says 'no access' to the public and dropped to the high point. We were seen by farmer on his combine but legged it back to gate. With CJM. | bolton | 17/08/2016 |
From S over Maes Koll. With DT on way to watch BW at BR. | CJM | 17/08/2016 |
Parked in Norton Malreward, enjoyed the walk over Maes Knoll, taking in the great view from the trig point which was (almost) en route. A man in the next field was firing a gun so I didn't hang around long at the county top. | edmundjohnson | 31/07/2016 |
Walked across from Meas Knoll, rubbish gone from road, along field boundary and then down by fence. Always seems weird going downhill to a 'top' | PeterD | 26/04/2016 |
Solo. Rubbish. | simon and co | 06/12/2015 |
From SE. Carefully waypointed the 2 highest points on OpenStreetMap boundary: 1) ST 59382 66879 by fence 24m NNE of hedge corner; 2) ST 59335 66871 pasture 38m WNW of hedge corner, close to an OS trig (block) which I made a token attempt to find - apparently buried. | RHW | 12/04/2015 |
1/3 Agree with all previous peakbaggers. Appalling fly tipping on lane but nice views of Bristol | Fergalh | 02/12/2014 |
Mindful of the crops and fearful of the dogs warning admired from a safe distance. Field gates heavily secured presumably against even more fly-tipping. | Newton Maximus | 16/10/2014 |
walk up from Tanorth Road. One or two barbed wire fences. | arranc | 30/03/2014 |
Parked roadside in the interestingly named hamlet of Norton Malreward. Did a cirular walk via Norton Hawkfield and North Wick, then N up onto Dundry Hill. Progressed NE to convenient field boundary (at ST 5963 6672) which we followed to the UA top. Returning over Maes Knoll to bag the trig. | jonglew | 08/12/2013 |
Lots of good tips from previous baggers - thank you.
No parking on narrow country road to east as only passing places (never seen so much fly-tipping before, this road looks and smells disgusting!)
Parked in housing estate to north, Tonorth Road and followed FP up from there.
PS When is a hill not a hill? Answer - when it is a Unitary Top! | Hillsidenick | 31/03/2013 |
Visited all the Bristol/Bath area highpoints in one day | magirob | 05/03/2013 |
Begin at east Dundry lane going uphill until sign post on right (Right of way). Across first field & then ascent to peak. Good beginning hill walk. | spidey | 19/01/2013 |
Camped at Norton Hawkfield, walked over Maes Knoll to East Dundry Road and crawled under a fence and followed field edge. | Overthehilljill | 30/09/2012 |
Access more difficult now as barbed wire fences reinstated. Nearby footpath is also apparently disputed by local farmer. | Kevgbl | 03/09/2012 |
Easily accessible even if crops are growing. | destaylor | 10/02/2011 |
First time i,ve had to walk downhill to a top.not really a top but a fence line halfway a cross a field. parked in the lane higher up full of flytip rubbish. | DARRENG | 16/09/2010 |
Very bad top. | The Team | 01/08/2009 |
Followed Ted Richards' example which has the advantage of easy parking, great views of something other than Bristol and the feeling you've climbed a hill rather than just walked to the edge of a field. | Herbert Anchovy | 16/07/2009 |
quick out and back from the road, parking very iffy. | asbown | 10/06/2009 |
Quick dash after bagging nearby Marilyn. | Dugswell2 | 04/06/2008 |
Parked to the south and came up over Maes Knoll first, making a mess of the decent and loosing the path. Bagged county top by straight dash in and out from minor road. | Father Ted | 21/03/2008 |
Went along the boundary fence as crop in the field. Better views than the bigger Dundry. | signyred | 30/04/2007 |
Out and back | Rhayader_wander | 10/04/2006 |
Parked at ST 601 672 & walked up from below, keeping a low profile... top next to hedge. Warning - some field boundaries don't tie up with OS maps. Why are all the tops in the former Avon part way up hills rather than at the top? Most annoying! | wheresthepath | 26/11/2005 |
