From Glen Banchor west. Then NW up boggy track in rain before ascending grassy ramp to col north of Carn Dearg. Exceptionally windy on ridge, so didn’t go south to the MT. Continued in lessening wind with great views, easy terrain, north along ridge over various tops to Carn Sgulain. With the Walkers.Denise 06/10/2023
Parked at the end of the public road in Glen Banchor. Carn Dearg, Carn Ban, Carn Ballach SW Top, Carn Ballach NE Top, Meall a'Bhothain, Carn Sgulain W Top, Carn Sgulain, A'Chailleach, Geal Charn. Very wet underfoot and gale force winds initially on Carn Dearg (hat blown over the cliffs) but easing later with cloud lifting. With Gillian and Denise.richard6906/10/2023
Parked at the end of Glen Road then followed the track all the way to the grouse butts in Gleann Ballach. Once the Allt Fionndrigh was crossed on a rickety bridge the track became extremely wet!. From the butts found a small path that led to the summit, the path managed to avoid the worst parts of the bog. Route back the same but went over Creag Liath.garyhoney21/08/2023
A lollipop route from the car parking area at the end of the Glen Road, Newtonmore on a lovely warm day - but plagued by insects (it was flying ant day; spent most of the outing with them crawling over me). Solo round of Càrn Dearg, Càrn Sgulain and A'Chailleach from parking spot in Glen Banchor. 7.15am start with headtorch. Circuit clockwise to get the long walk in out of the way, Quite a lot of bog encountered befoer the 250m pull up to the top of Càrn Dearg. Less bog up on the plateau, sometimes squelchy sections of peat, and sometimes frozen, with the occasional patch of icy snow to circumvent, so it was slow going at times. Dry weather, but bitterly cold wind up top. Long plod over the plateau before arriving at Carn Sgulain - there was a group of 3 ladies at the summit, so I said hello, but has no plans to stop at the top, so tapped the summit and headed over to A' Chailleach before the long descent. 7h 9min time.mproudfoot15/01/2022

Walked up Glen Banchor to Dalballoch (no problem crossing the river) then followed deer tracks on the western flank of Carn Macoul which kept us out of the wet valley bottom. From the col 639009 we enjoyed the fine scenery and weather to the summit perched on top of a cliff. Returned to the col but descended snow slopes east where we saw lots of mountain hares. A fine day out.mindlessflogger30/03/2016

The route in the guide book goes up to the head of Gleann Balloch and across above a sloping rock face. However, the direct route to Carn Dearg’s South East Top look doable, so I opted for a change of plan. I followed a line of grouse shooting butts across deep heather, putting up another couple of grouse appropriately enough. I then headed directly up a scree grass buttress whilst being plagued by flies rather than midges. The final section onto the Carn Dearg’s SSE ridge was very steep. I reached the top of Carn Dearg at about 1.20 p.m. where I paused briefly.langskill07/08/1995

Newtonmore – Up Allt a Chaorainn – A’ Chailleach – Carn Sgulain – Carn Balloch – Carn Ban – Carn Dearg – Carn Dearg SE Top – Across Gleann Ballach and down Allt Fionndrigh to Newtonmore. (PM,JD)gerrybowes20/05/1980
One munro and 5 tops with Gerry B.bolton20/05/1980
Alone. I took the train from Kingussie to Newtonmore after staying at the youth hostel at Kingussie. I walked from Newtonmore Railway Station via Glen Banchor, Dalballoch, Carn Macoul, Carn Dearg (SE and NW tops) to arrive at the summit of Carn Ban. The descent was via the upper reaches of Gleann Ballach, then following Allt Fionndrigh, Glen Banchor, Newtonmore and along the road to Kingussie. Hard snow and ice above 2250´. Some mist and wind. Much soft snow by Allt Fionndrigh and rain in the valley on the return. A few deer were seen on the lower slopes and several ptarmigan on the highest part of Carn Ban.pwbellarby09/02/1980
