O: No trees felled here, so this must have always been a clearing in the wood. Went into wood but it appeared to be going downhill in all directions.

Parked at the end of the Old Coach Road, John W's notes remain an accurate guide to getting onto HP. With brother, Pete. Drizzle and cloud base 600m so good day to bag this.pwheeler12/03/2024
Parked below the wood in the carpark. Walked up the road and over the side fence, continued up the track then to the right along to the high point hidden in the plantation wood.smocks and denims10/11/2023
Parked at the end of the Old Coach Road, then up the road to the entrance to the wood. Followed the circular route round, breaking off to visit the summit. A short 30 minute walk.silveracorn_alan12/05/2023
Park in gateway. Clockwise loop and up from NW on tussock grass.Moorponder29/04/2023

Parked at NY3202024600, on N side of old railway. Used old railway FP, E, to AL access point at NY3307524635 (No fell access via the museum). Threlkeld Knotts, White Pike, Clough Head, Calfhow Pike, Little Dodd, Great Dodd, Randerside, Matterdale Common, Cockley Moor, Old Corpse Road back to Threlkeld Quarry.Isbjorn27/04/2022
The hill is a mixture mature conifers, felled conifers and new growth. The summit, however, is very easy to access from the north west side of the circular track. It is on open land which has never been planted. There is also a workmens' caravan at the turn off spot on the track.JohnW26/04/2022
From High Row car park. Cockley Moor (active forestry W side, along circular E track then through saplings to clear summit), old coach road to White Pike, around Clough Head to Calfhow Pike, Little Dodd (alternative cairn), Great Dodd, Randerside, Matterdale Common in perfect weather.Jim.Fothergill16/09/2021

8/8 Used Birkett route up to Threlkeld Knotts and on to Clough Head (cracking route) then dropped down to White Pike, contoured right round to Calfhow Pike on good sheep trods, then passed Little Dodd to reach Great Dodd, and dropped down wet bridleway to Randerside and Matterdale Common, down to the Old Coach Road, and right to road at High Row, to pick up track into woods and summit Cockley Moor using the track right round the top of the hill (easy over cut trees), return to St Johns all the way on the Old Coach Road. Lovely route and Cumbrian hills 999 - 1002 for us!nickywood108/10/2020
Currently easy access by taking circular track clockwise and heading to summit from NW side.conanharrod25/09/2020
Young trees getting dense, but still open access to the summit from track to NWPeteN19/08/2020
I parked on the high point of the road and forced a way up the brash and new plantings, all filled with snow - should have used the trackColin Crawford21/02/2020

From Matterdale common. Followed edge of plantation to north edge and easily through new trees to summit. The Mell fells in and out of sunlight. Back to 408 and home. Addendum - just noticed that's Solway Firth to Ambleside compleated. :o)Wycombe Wanderer26/05/2019
Parked at end of Old Coach Road/Lucys wood. Walked up to gate and jumped over as it was locked. Easy bag except for last 50 metres. Follow main track to third clearing on left and try and find a path through the deforestation for 50 metres. Top is obvious. New saplings planted and Wood is presently for sale, so might have access problems later.Jhimmy27/02/2019

Part of a circuit of the Deepdale Dodds, starting from Dockray (Note: the National trust car park at NY397221 charges £7.50 for over 6 hrs and the machine does not currently take the new pound coins. Parking for 6 cars can be had in Dockray, opposite the phone box).BobHancock17/09/2017

N along road from parking spot at High Row, over gate at Cockley Moor Nature Reserve. Green track to junction, RH track to end of wood at cleared section. Edge of wood followed (amazing moss formations) to tussocky knoll in bay at side of wood. No trees felled here so this must have always been a clearing.Aye Jimmy21/02/2015
Parked alongside access gate by the road north of High Row. Notice stating that the woods are a nature reserve and access is not permitted. Climbed gate and soon out of sight along the good track. If you turn right at the junction access to the summit is across 200m of brash, the detritus of clear-felling. Not a problem but slow progress as the summit is clearly visible. If you turn left, summit access is through a short stretch of easily negotiable trees. Assuming you have the confidence to leave the track at the correct point this is easier. My suggestion is to complete the circle anti-clockwise.moorsman20/06/2014
Used forest track from road north of High Row. Take right fork as height is gained then left by clearfell area. Grassy knoll free of trees is a potential high point. Further investigations not possible due to very thick plantations.GPS gave NY38126 22536 at hig point.mick19/04/2014
In the snow. Easy access from the forestry track.JohnStoneham15/02/2014
W Jenx, parked at road below hill. Nice track into woods and circular. At top end, w good views of Blencathra group and Great Mell, trees felled!, find easy access to high point, grassy mound.nordicstar22/12/2013
With Jo, figure of eight walk from High Row: track onto Cockley Moor (fine views north, south just trees, lots of fungi in wood), then onto Matterdale Common (good all round views). Weather; sunny with high intermittent cloud at first, mizzle later. Very good visibility on tops.amblerbob18/09/2013
Soon into trees and not too bad to find the top - bagging 400m tops at time. Did wonder if anybody else had or would ever come here!Chris Pearson04/06/2004
