Probably should NOT have gone this way, given that it is a construction site for a newish windfarm. Land reforma act 2004 doesnt cover access in this case. So parked at start of Kyle something wind farm. Plenty of space for any sized industrial vehicle to get past my car. Walked to side of locked gate and onwatds upwards. Past a compound with many many huge vehicles and remote AI operated security gadgest. Advised times two to leave the area. We walked on smiled and waved. Looking at 1:25 o s maps, confunue up this main drage until the higher - second of tracks on left ( benreoch also on left ), walk alimg this. It peters out. You will see on old faint tractor set. Follow this, becomles more apparemt. Easy on to summit. Return exaclty the same way. Post industrila….slag / coal spill. Wouldnt trust any muddy area or muddy slope. Keep on the hard core tracks.VerySlowPlodder06/01/2024
Parked small space approx 498 069, over embankment and followed path past three ponds and then uphill.colazione18/11/2023
Parked in a litter strewn B741 lay-by just south of the three wee ponds. A narrow path runs through this and up to a stone track around the lochs. This leads west and then abruptly north. Once at its highest point you have to go over rough grassland and a couple of wire fences before reaching the summit.summitter12/05/2023
From residential street (Armour Wynd) just S. of spot height 172, up track to the 6ft locked & meshed gate - Gave this a miss & continued E. along track to junction with path at NS 48556 06878, turned left & along path for about 200m - Left again & headed NNE up the overgrown, but fairly obvious route of the former tramway; shown on 1:25K map - On reaching the winding gear housing, a short scramble up over spoil to join track - Up tracks to just beyond LH bend at 491086 & then ATV track up NW ridge to summit cairn.gerrybowes23/08/2022
From the double gates opposite Clawfin NS506074. Up qy rd to hp, about NS495088, TR level, L, WSW, to BWF on skyline, where ATV tk along ridge to summit. Beware NE flank which is steep deep veg over boulders – ankle breaking terrainIsbjorn15/05/2022
Parked in a lay-by just east of Pennyvenie Fm. Over fence by Keep Out sign to join track south of the three ponds. Over gate and up mine roads to SW of the summit. Followed wall to ridge then ATV track to summit cairn. A really nice hill once above the mine roads. Solo.Dangerous Dave17/04/2022
With Stephen from north end of Dalmellington. Other than a clamber over a pallet early on straightforward ascent using basically going due north. Returned using the old mine roads - really just to see how it was going back to nature although that is a long time away to the north.SS16/03/2022
Cool down after the Hillbilly race!quadbarrel20/02/2022
Parked due E of Pennyvenie Hill, just managed to get car off road at a gate giving access to a mapped track (NS 4886 0676). Up onto Pennyvenie Hill first then up to here on a good trod all the way. My final hump/marilyn in Section 27C.jonglew26/01/2022
Active mine workings are all to the N and E of summit. Ascent from SW is straight forward - would likely be OK even on a weekday now. Track from B road at 481065 / cut up to old mine track from ruin at 483070 / path to summit over rough ground from 489077 - as per agentmancuso below.49pp05/09/2021
3 of 3: After Green Hill we drove to Clawfin. Parked by the gate. Old mine road to near the base then overgrown rough ground and a steep climb. Karen waited at the BWF.ChrisR22/07/2021
Parked at B741 Pennyvenie Bridge NS499069. Climbed barbed wire fences then over bank through copse to join open cast mine track, kept left, lagoons on right, track went right and headed north. Made for wall / fence corner at NS496078 then chose route over rough moorland to summit cairn. Operated ham radio for SOTA on summit using HF Morse / Voice.G4OBK (Phil)09/09/2020
Yuk. Parked at the quarry entrance at Clawfin. Up the quarry track and took the 3rd track to the L (counting from the piles of tyres). Up tailings and onto the hill. Disgusting terrain; long tussocky grass conceals a massive boulder field, presumably fallen from the crag above. Grovelled up to the walled area below the crags, then struggled up the W side of the crags, hidden boulders even on the side of the hill. The view is horrid, over the quarry and coalfield.Gill25/01/2020
Last of a 3 hill circular from the Railway centre, climbing Green Hill and Benquhat then over rough ground to intercept a track following this around to base of hill then easy enough over one fence to reach grassy track and upto the top. Descent similar but continued on grassy path to find track again then used tracks veering off to explore Laight Castle. I couldnt find any remains apart from an obvious defensive ditch. Beautiful view of the Dunaskin glen though and i saw a fox. Followed edge around to re-join a grassy track leading to a gate then beyond a flat area, a track continues to arrive back at the Ind Heritage complex. Doon catchment completed.Dazingdale21/09/2019

From Clawfin. Followed track until track going south at appr0x. 495080. This proved an easy way to foot of hill. Conditions very easy underfoot after dry spell.russell6115/04/2019
Fine hill. From Clawfin via mining tailings.willyross08/03/2019
tickchazzyboy1929/12/2018
With GN. Very overgrown so progress hard. Suggest August is not the time to visit as underfoot conditions are awful due to vegetation. From Clawfin as others.trimarc223/08/2018
Parked at gate on north side of road at Clawfin. Followed opencast access roads to 502083 and then straight up SE slope to the top. Easy for most of the way to the summit of this lovely hill which has been ruined by the abandoned workings. Just over 1 hour return and 2.5 miles. Solo.bolton08/05/2018
Followed agentmancuso route, some tussocks near summit otherwise paths and tracks of one sort or another. Great sunny day, snow on distant summits icluding Arran.cjo07/01/2018
P residential st just S of Pt173, track to high gate over vanished railway then straight up on LHS of burn, easy enough.agentmancuso06/01/2018
From near Clawfin. Now disused open cast mine tracks. Over the spoil area oand cross the burn. Hard going ground, eventually up the west side of the crag. Down following the wall to the west, better to follow this up too.N.Morters22/04/2017
By Carole Engel's recommended route - at 500074 take wide quarry road to 488076 - dogleg back to large clear area at 490077 - path by wall through two gates to summit.Chris Peart18/12/2016
Agree good parking at NS 504074. Direct ascent from mine track up Pennyvennie Burn is hell. Wish I had taken the longer but much easier option of the mine road to NW of hill firstcarole engel13/09/2016
I used the same route as Jenny and Rick on a quiet but very warm afternoon.Dugswell205/06/2016
With Jenx, from good off road parking at GR503073. No quarry works on-going, went in at 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon with no hassles. A gate out the back of parking spot leads over a rise and then reclaimed land to quarry road at 500074. Followed the road a 100m then cut up right following the Pennyvennie burn and higher up a wall and fence to point where possible to ascend the hill directly up steep very vegetated grassy slopes. The flag has gone. Entrance to mine at Clawfin now in use by some other construction operation so best avoided.nordicstar25/11/2015
Seemingly no need to sneak up at the moment, though it was quite late in the day and getting dark by the time we were down. Would have been a nice hill once.jenx25/11/2015
from Clawfin using mine access road Galltywenallt24/10/2015
Thick clag and Satmap from spot height 173GmacT14/04/2015
parked at open cast mine entrance opposite clawfin, mine track to below summit area.robertphillips18/10/2014
Summit easily gained using tracks to begin with zigzagging a bit. Then disaster - took a direct line back down Pennyvenie Burn and into horrible mixed dense vegetation including brambles. Not recommended!AndrewFinnimore11/10/2014
Farm track from 173 spot height on OS map leads up through fields to opencast roadway, via 6-foot gate. Roadway ends in flat area from where the summit is seen. The flag appears to have been renewed.neimcv28/09/2014
From opencast mine entrance at 506075 on a Saturday afternoon. Climbed over gate, crossed several no unauthorised access signs, ascended opencast mining tracks onto open hillside. No sign of any on-going mining activity. An impressive summit.Topographer5717/05/2014
Ascent by roughly the same route as Thearlaichdubh. No GOML type signage/mining activity at all. A Union Jack flies from the cairn with its outer third having disappeared: a comment on possible independence or the state of the hill? Crossed fairly recent mine workings to Benquhat Hill.campagvelocet26/03/2014
Simple ascent from gate at 482068 where there is parking. Just head upwards and bear right higher up. I believe Scottish Coal opencast are not trading just now, so there is little hassle. Impressive cairn. Field was muddy. First Marilyn of 2014.Thearlaichdubh02/01/2014
Chose New Years day so that the Open Cast Mine might be closed. Parked at about NS500069. Through a gate into woodland and then out on to quarry spoil. once across the large road, followed the Pennyvenie Burn and then the wall before heading for the summit. Back the same way.andy macp01/01/2013
From roadside, over fields, some sun, cool, sharp wind, good view. Met couple from Fife who also thought this hill might be restricted. No sign of coal workers/security.iangalbraith01/01/2013
Being a cowardly sort, snuck in through the forest from E on a stormy Xmas morning. Didn't look so daft on my old map but, as new maps show, things very different now. Track from 523086 then hack along forest edge above giant crater. Not recommended!AndyS25/12/2011
Bit of an epic! Access problem from S - opencast quarry. Fri eve, still folk about so started at forest gate NS 513.077. OK until rubble slope met; up this, then another onto vast wasteland. Discreet traverse of workings reqd. Then steep ascent and long grass and mossy rocks. Cairn.Aye Jimmy22/07/2011
I followed Chris Bienkowski's recommended route (see rhb Yahoo Group posting on 21/04/2007). No problems at all, but it was the New Tear bank holiday weekend and the mine was non-operational.Man of Kernow102/01/2011
Late Sunday afternoon, almost dusk and Burns night - surely no-one would be working? Then half way across the works a JCB came by and the driver gave a friendly wave.Martin R14/03/2009
solovegibagger25/05/2007
Failed through Benbain Wood, meeting abrupt wall of spoil and working machinery below the ridge. Succeeded by trespassing over the locked gates at the railway museum. Hid behind spoil from dirt trucks twice. Stood back and one-armed-signalled to one driver who graciously nodded confirmation and continued driving.Eddie10/02/2003
On track to water pumping station over rough tussock and mossy rocks fallen from rock face. To right of cliff to small grassy top. 10.00.arranc19/02/2001
Visited weeks before the obvious approach became an opencast coal mine.fasgadh23/09/2000
fine profile due to old quarryingl, new big quarry sadly encroaching from W. track from 503073 then bypass old quarry debris & crags either side to summit RHW13/11/1999

Cycled from home, before Opencast workings. Ascent from Pennyvenie bridge, stayed in sheep pasture above burn. Followed wall to Summit area, then cairn . Descent line was further N.E. passing Basalt columns, and round Fox Park. The Captainblank
