1 of 4: Parked at 881572 and same as PeteF. With Karen. | ChrisR | 21/04/2023 |
Parked NX8810957173. Up track until point where forestry has been clearfelled above the track. At this point it was easy to walk up under the trees along the western edge of the clearfell with a short heathery section above to summit. | PeteF | 27/10/2022 |
Same route as Invicta14 below.Easily up the bright green sward towards the minor NE top and then a short hop across to the summit on a faint path. | ARM | 23/09/2022 |
Solo trip. The most attractive of the Dumfries-shire hills so far. The windthrown trees have nostly been cleared east of easting 89. The firebreak at 893573 is still visible as a gap in the brash and provides an easy ascent route. A wee gem of a hill. | Invicta14 | 28/05/2022 |
estimated date | cgilmour | 01/03/2022 |
Parked 500m north of Doonside behind a large hardstand passing place. Ascended via track at Doonside. Many fallen trees across track bypassed on northern side of the track (plantation of mature trees makes for easy walking). Continued to reach the cairn described in other summit logs which marks a faint path through the trees. It is apparent that this used to be a fire break, but is now overgrown with weedy trees. I did not encounter any fallen trees in this section which made for slightly boggy, but easy access. Beyond is a short section of knee deep heather to quickly reach the summit. I was lucky to have fantastic 360 degree views. | raffemeister | 11/01/2022 |
From Doonside. The firebreak with the marked cairn was blocked with fallen trees after Storm Arwen, and on the day of my ascent it was not passable. I went up a very wet break slightly to the west, approx NX89135 57186 - very wet boggy going but few fallent trees. Fantastic views from summit. We went on across heather to pass all 3 tops. Intended descent via firebreak at NX 89857 57310 was not possible, it is completely full of fallen trees. I followed the dog northwards beneath the trees starting just N of the easterly cairn & it is mostly walkable with only some clambering/scratching. Came out just W of the turning point for the forestry road and returned westwards to make a loop - lots of fallen trees on forestry road. Great day out with the dog | catlovesmaps | 27/12/2021 |
Cairn marking firebreak is useful as the firebreak is not that obvious. Treated to millions of bilberries on the summit | conanharrod | 19/08/2021 |
Forestry road NE of Doonside, as others. Road swings left, then right, all uphill. Swinging left again, the track levels out, going NE. Route(s) right along firebreak is/are about as the track starts to go downhill, leading in 200 m to open area with cairn on prominent summit. | henryfm | 07/08/2021 |
From Doonside - took forestry track, then along a firebreak and through a short section of trees to find the heather and up to the summit. Descent by the same route. | briandavies | 23/10/2020 |
Parked just S of Doonside. Followed forest road (not on maps) as others. Cairn marking firebreak easily spotted. Great route; thanks everyone! With Alfie. | Dangerous Dave | 02/02/2020 |
From Doonside. Parked 100m north of end of logging road, where there is a large hard standing area beside a field gate. Up logging road. Didn't take track into forest marked by a cairn, shortly after first firebreak, but continued a couple of hundred metres further to the next firebreak, marked by a very small cairn across the ditch. Easily up firebreak, then short stroll through heather to summit. | vuirich | 10/01/2020 |
Took the forestry road as others but almost missed the firebreak so built up the cairn at its junction with the forestry road to ensure everyone subsequently finds the easiest route. | summitter | 05/09/2019 |
Parked off road just south of Fairgirth then short road walk to the timber road (where there is some space to park). Followed instructions and found fire break as promised - thanks. Views were decent on a poor day but beat the approaching downpour. | SS | 26/01/2019 |
Parked Doonside nx8802756891, new building near complete so this parking spot may not be permanent. Don't miss the fire break its overgrown and the other side of a ditch. | G0HIO | 28/05/2018 |
Parked just inside farm entrance as road too narrow (NX 88186 57228). Good logging track to NX 89311 57346 whence rough and steep fire break before clearing the forest and veering off SW for the top. With Alex C. | jonglew | 22/03/2018 |
Shared some Fox's biscuits up here in memory of Alison, whose funeral it was today. Very misty and atmospheric. | Alex C | 22/03/2018 |
Early start to catch the break of dawn over the Solway... took the new forest track as others and made quick easy ground to the boggy but not too long thin firebreak. Great views to the west | N.Morters | 11/01/2018 |
From the cattle shed near Doonside, up the shiny new logging road as others, but without a GPS. Tried the first firebreak -wrong. The second is the correct one, across a ditch to start; there is a small cairn if you look carefully. Easy going in the firebreak, rough once past the trees. Good views. | Gill | 08/12/2017 |
Used Carole Engel's route. Thank you Carole. | Lionel Bidwell | 18/11/2017 |
#634 Took CE's route. | tim747 | 14/11/2017 |
Walked up from Sandyhills car park, then same route as others. | NormanW | 21/10/2017 |
As per Carole Engel, bombproof track from NE of Doonside to NX 89315 57354 then up simple firebreak to heather. | agentmancuso | 02/09/2017 |
Before our Cairsphain walk tomorrow. We parked on minor road and took new forest track up to close to summit but a bit of heather bashing up through the trees and over heather summit to reach top. Reasonable views to the coast. | nickywood1 | 02/09/2017 |
3/5. | PGCE | 08/07/2017 |
Weather fair. | MountainMac | 14/05/2017 |
Followed carole engels route. Looks like track is being up graded evidence of explosives being used given the amount of detonator cord lying around | cjo | 06/05/2017 |
Tricky parking where unmapped track starts. Better to use layby at bottom of hill to avoid annoying farmer. | AndrewFinnimore | 17/04/2017 |
Thanks Carole - superb. Start at NX 8818 5722 - keep slightly R after 100m, leave forest road at NX 8931 5735, after 150 horizontal m and 42 vertical m you emerge only 150m N by E of the summit cairn. | jimbloomer | 06/02/2017 |
By the Carole Engel route. Thanks Carole, it's the second hill today where you've cracked it. | Chris Peart | 18/12/2016 |
Piece of cake following the Carole Engel notes. | Owen B | 03/11/2016 |
Parked just N of Doonside (14:45). Took wide forest road (not on map) to near highest point (83912 57349) from where steep green break in trees led to open ground quite near summit (15:40). Dry, windy, fair views. Finish 16:10 | dbb | 29/09/2016 |
Carole Engel saved my day on this one. I'd already had three aborted attempts (in the rain!) that morning from different start points when I saw her log. That route is simplicity itself. Route(s) and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/five-attempts-for-two-hills.html | Gayle | 05/09/2016 |
Un-mapped track from NX884570 almost to top. leave track at NX893573 and climb easy steep break to heather and billberry summit (feint path) | carole engel | 26/08/2016 |
Solo | HFB | 25/03/2016 |
Parked in entrance to Southwick Cemetery at NX90719 56951 – South along road for about 80m to old metal gates – Into field and followed wall down to stream – Crossed stream & made way to start of ride at corner of forest (904568) – Followed wall (crossed it a few times) to top of ride & then a 600m walk across heather to summit. (S) | gerrybowes | 20/11/2015 |
Parked at the graveyard on the east side. Horrendously wet alongside the recommended wall running NW. Headed up through the forest. Emerged into deep heather and bilberry for a slog to the summit. Ironically making my own line through the coniferous forest was the easiest part. Solo. | bolton | 10/08/2015 |
From churchyard. Boggy start to find wall then crossed backwards and forwards to reach col before easy walk to summit. | chriswatson | 26/04/2015 |
From near Southwick church ruins. I planned to walk up the forest break but found it easier walking in the forest itself. The top was deep heather. This route avoids the deer fence | borderterrier | 17/03/2015 |
from churchyard followed wall to the top good views all round today. | robertphillips | 07/02/2015 |
Parked beyond Doonside, horrific ascent through trees- don't.
Dry, cold, calm and good views. | iangalbraith | 02/02/2015 |
W Jenx. From the old churchyard. Took the wall to south and followed the field to ride. Only 2 walls to cross. Stay with the ride, don't be tempted into the forest like we were. Managed to find a line up to the deer fence, then a good deer path along the top to near cairn. Came back same way then cut to wall and the burn in ride. Deer fence about fallen down, easier down. Good depth of bracken but easy through. | nordicstar | 03/08/2014 |
From Southwick Graveyard, horrible overgrown burn gulley to horrible deep tussocky heather and bilberry summit area. Nice coastal view. | neimcv | 26/06/2013 |
Parked in layby at NX880563, S of Fairgirth House. Road to NX882572, then track & wide forest ride round to NX894571. From here took narrow forest ride SE uphill till clear of trees. Last 100m deep heather. 1hr to summit. | fortyniner | 07/06/2013 |
after Criffel. from churchyard. the sooner you find the big wall running NW the easier it is, however the summit heather was up to my thighs. dire | Thearlaichdubh | 30/05/2013 |
Dreadful bracken and heather thrash from ruined church on east side, with AT and JdF. Rain, and cloud almost to sea level. | Man of Kernow1 | 25/06/2011 |
Concur with MT. Wall scrambling and burn jumping is also required. Probably best to start from just south of the church/graveyard, then follow a stone wall across a field and burn, then up the hill through a break in the conifers. | Topographer57 | 25/06/2011 |
Climbed from Southwick Graveyard following burn and stonewall thro 4 foot bracken. I had to climb over wall 5 xs on way up when way forward was blocked but often wall was breached at these points. | Dugswell2 | 04/06/2009 |
From E by ruin, crossed frozen field and burn, up through trees then rough heather for quite a way. Sizeable cairn on top, amidst the heather. | Aye Jimmy | 05/02/2009 |
Climbed from graveyard to E. Followed burn up to deer fence, after it turns left bear right over rough heather to summit. Hard going. | Alan | 29/01/2009 |
Parked in Sandyhills and took the track through Laggan. Passed a couple of workers feeding deer before ascended sharply to the summit area. Note there is no gate through the fence on top as there is at the bottom. | garyhoney | 29/12/2008 |
Desperate struggle with deep heather and a 12 foot wobbly deer fence. Route to deer fence is obscure fire break from track to S of summit - marked by a few sticks across a boggy bit.
Local deer are fearless but harmless! | maknipe | 08/06/2007 |
Operated ham radio from summit making 25 contacts.
Did not have to climb deer fence, wild goats sighted near the top. Deep heather made going difficult.Parked at graveyard NX906569 then via NX90375682 had to climb one dry stane dyke. A difficult one. | G4OBK (Phil) | 25/05/2006 |
With Phil (G4OBK) | judy55cat | 25/05/2006 |
Fought up from lane junction to New Farm where friendly tractor drive waved in the last of the daylight. | Eddie | 09/02/2003 |
From Sandyhills. On road to back of Laggan into forest. Snow quickly covered the track around S end of Fairgirth Hill, over stream and steep SW slopes of RP. Directly up for 200' to ridge with discouraging views of L shaped hill with cairn on horizon. Very slow going with many ups and downs over treacherous snow and final 1/2 mile to top at 12.25. | arranc | 24/02/2002 |
With S. | The Captain | 19/03/2000 |
heather fog from E, esp across summit, fine coast view. minor rd @ 902577, up break in trees | RHW | 12/11/1999 |
heathery plod from south | vegibagger | 10/12/1996 |
With Lesley on a rare w/e to Dumfries hills. | Chris Pearson | 19/05/1996 |
As Pete F. The forest track on the 1:25,000 OS map is shown as terminating at NX884571 but in fact continues as PeteF describes roughly following the firebreak shown heading broadly NE. Heading uphill at the W edge of the felled trees leads quickly and almost directly to the summit . | ColinW | blank |
The cairn has been removed/demolished so a new one has been built. Situated upon a stump | Katrina89 | blank |
