We parked in a handy spot just off the A7 at the start of the access road to Rigfoot. Walked up this road and from above Rigfoot itself took an ATV track through the legions of freshly planted conifers until about two-thirds the way up Roughbank Height. From here it's a plod through new plantation, heather and bracken, aided occasionally by trods. A similar story to Broad Head, with an ATV section to ease the knees. Onwards to the more straightforward Blackgrain Height, Faw Side and Rashiegrain Height then a detour northwards from the main ridge to take in Causewaygrain Head. From this point the ATV tracks run out and so it was a knee-deep wade & trudge through wet humpy veg all the way to White Hope Edge and back - not one for the uncommitted bagger! Once back at Rashiegrain Height things got relatively easy as its a mere fence follow to Pikethaw Hill, Frodaw Height, Dan's Hags and Stibbiegill Head, before dropping down to Meikledale and the joys of a tarmac finish. 6 hours total. | summitter | 23/10/2023 |
From Wisp Hill. On faint ATV tracks either side of low fence. | KeithByTheC | 07/09/2023 |
From Eweslees. Straight up from the A7 over Frodaw Hill, various hags to the summit of Pikethaw. Quite a drop and then up to Wisp Hill. Straight down via Whin Hill to start. Parked in layby just north of Eweslees. | jigglybones | 02/10/2022 |
Along with wisp hill. Solo. | VerySlowPlodder | 13/09/2022 |
Start at Rigfoot. Follow the fence line up to Roughbank Height. Broad Head. Blackgrain Height.Faw Side. Rashiegrain Height. Pikethaw Hill. Frodaw Height. Dan's Hags. Stibbiegill Head. Then WSW don steep ground to the track, then cross the bridgeand follow the path passed Swingill carry on to the deer fence then pass the wall near the river, follow the faint path back to the forestry road at Burngrains and then back to the start. Atv tracks ,faint sheep tracks and lots of boggy areas, heather and rough grass tuffs ,plenty of Hags to avoid. | smocks and denims | 14/04/2022 |
2 of 7: From Wisp Hill. With Karen. | ChrisR | 09/07/2021 |
after Wisp Hill | jef | 04/05/2021 |
Parked in layby at about NY 391975 (12:00). Crossed river on road bridge by entrance to Eweslees and climbed grass slope to Frodshaw Height. Followed faint track by fence to the large summit cairn (13:10). Continued down to Ewes Doors and then up to Wisp Hill (14:30). Descended over Whin Fell to the road just north of the layby (15:10). Sunny, warm weather; good though slightly hazy views. | dbb | 22/04/2021 |
Parked on bridge, S side road (NY 3882 9721). Avoided Eweslees Fm as unfriendly notice on gate. Went up onto Peach Hill from NY 3871 9715, plenty of trods through the bracken; Frodaw Heights first. Nice oversized and shapely cairn on Pikethaw. Doubled back for Dan's Hags and Stibbiegill Head before dropping down to road at Fiddleton. Several benchmarks along the road back to car. | jonglew | 01/08/2020 |
Parked on the bridge on the S-bound side of the A7 (do not park on the N side it obscures the farm exit). Through Eweslees farm, paddled the river, then up an ATV track and step over the fence onto the E ridge of Frodaw Height. Easy, dry grass to the top of FH but the top is a foul bog/hag fest. Fortunately this is the only bad part of the walk and an ATV track on the S side of the fence conveys you easily to Pikethaw Hill, huge cairn. Animal tracks down the N ridge on the E side of the fence, swapping to the W side part way down for an easy ATV track. Up Wisp Hill very easily using an ATV track through the bogs on the S side of the fence. Down is easy, a bearing in mist will bring you to the ATV track heading down the S ridge over Whin Fell. Gates bring you across the fields to the silage bags at the entrance to Eweslees. | Gill | 23/01/2020 |
From Eweslees beside burn and up NE spur. Return via wisp Hill | m0jla | 14/10/2019 |
With Wisp and Ellson from Glenrief on hot sunny day. Tough underfoot, particularly towards end. | Rounsfell | 24/08/2019 |
After Wisp Hill, from Ewesdoors up right hand side of fence on ATV track to summit. Snowy and some lying. Summit photo is out of date as observed by Dangerous Dave, there is a large well made cairn on top. Back down by east ridge, sometimes on very steep ground to just south of farm then north on busy A7 to car in layby | Coinneach | 02/04/2019 |
Taxi to Eweslees from Langholm. Easy walk up via Ewes Doors. Then Wisp Hill and Comb Hill. Down to Mosspaul for bus back to Langholm | trimarc2 | 28/03/2019 |
X95 bus to Mosspaul for this hill and Wisp hill. | BasherBob | 23/02/2019 |
Followed fence from Wisp Hill. The pile of stones is now a superbly constructed cairn. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 11/02/2019 |
Climbed with Wisp Hill from the A7 layby north of Ewelees Farm. Animal tracks/ATV tracks can be followed down off Wisp Hill to the steep ascent up Pikethaw Hill from Ewes Doors. Watched the sunset over the Lakes before descending in the dark back to Ewes Doors and the track down the glen to the farm. | Clach Liath | 09/01/2019 |
Third visit, collecting surrounding Tumps | Colin Crawford | 15/10/2018 |
From hall at Meilkedalehaugh out by Burngrains where my great great grandfather was a shepherd then on up by Jock's Hope on very good track to the col. ATV tracks over some pretty wet ground to Faw Side and Pikethaw Hill and its substantial cairn. Return was by Swingill and out on another excellent track to the hall. | SS | 13/01/2018 |
Parked on east side of bridge (cannot obstruct line of sight from the farm, and, road from layby seriously dangerous. Asked by farmer not to use track, gathering sheep in. Went up Frodaw Height first. From summit good views, but trip cut short as mist settled in, so gave up. | iangalbraith | 04/12/2017 |
From Wisp Hill. Cloudy windy summit but easy addition. | N.Morters | 28/10/2017 |
Parked in layby on A7 north of farm entrance then walkyd back to farm for acess to fell. Plan was to go on to Wisp Hill but as was first walk of trip decided on steep ascent up Fordham Height via Peach Hill that would come back another day for this. Any doubt I might change my mind was dashed when hail driven by cold north westerly which changed to fast settling snow at summit confirmed the revised plan. Followed fence and boundary from summit to Ewes Doors then straight forward descent to farm and back along A7 to van. | mntainman | 24/04/2017 |
From Eweslees Farm. Easy from Frodaw Height. | Owen B | 15/04/2017 |

From Ewes Doors up snow slopes to the top. Continued over Frodaw Height, Dan's Hag, and Upper Hill for a direct descent to the gate at the road junction at Fiddleton. Thus ended a fine circuit (after Ellson Fell and Wisp Hill) which is recommended. | mindlessflogger | 24/01/2015 |
Parked on the bridge at Ewesless- southbound side. Polite notice asking you not to park on the northbound side. Up to Ewes Door, followed fence to summit. Cold and windy. | Minto | 18/01/2015 |
