Parking on S verge 100m W of Cefn, SJ056225. Vehicle tx to end of forest at SJ0545821579, from where an ATV tk wends up to a seat memorial at SJ053213, over non-BW fence here, then exasperating trackless knee deep veg, thankfully not far, to trig. There were no FPs at the trig, so needs more boots please. (NB the S side C class road, is NOT metalled E of SJ052204 and becomes deeply rutted at about SJ060209 and there is nowhere to turn around. The only parking place, is the soft ground turning point at the end of the tarmac, SJ052204, so not a recommended starting point when it is so easy from the N) | Isbjorn | 06/02/2024 |
Like PeterB. Route works well. Bracken deep but a trod through it. 1:25k shows a track above the wood to the summit area- which is rough but doable on the ground. | Moorponder | 23/06/2023 |
Parked at the cp at lake, 4 pound for all day. Path east of summit impassable due to fallen trees and land slip | Stevooo | 10/06/2023 |
On cycle from Llanfyllin to Foel Cedig. Lovely spring day. Left bike on road! | davechaffey | 12/05/2023 |
Same route up as Peterb, except I went via Clawdd Mawr. | PeterD | 02/04/2023 |
Please follow the instructions given by Peterb. I mistakenly thought I could see signs that someone had managed a way through the fallen trees. It was purgatory and after much flailing about I managed to escape the woods and pick up the route Peterb described. | KevPalmer | 20/02/2023 |
Having read the last few reports here it was with some trepidation that I decided to visit this hill today. I shouldn't have been concerned. After parking at SJ053205 it was a pleasant walk to the gate past all of the blown down trees on the above slopes. Once through the gate a second gate on the immediate left gives access to pasture. I followed this up to where the bracken was lying brown and flat having had a full winter to allow easy access, there were even sheep tracks to follow. One BWF was crossed without difficulty then another fence gave access to the hill. The heather was high but not a problem at all and once again a faint track was occasionally found. At the trig the views were fabulous. Definitely a hill for the winter. | Peterb | 09/02/2023 |
Second Ascent. Parked 0524 2045 with space for a couple of cars - last section of the road past the farm is very rough. Easy flattish track up valley to end of forestry. ROW up through forestry is completely impassible with fallen trees. Above the tree line the track shown on the map is non existent. This section is very rough, initially deep bracken, then deep heather. Good view of the Berwyns from the trig. | PeteF | 30/12/2022 |
Parked the car at the end of the minor road to the south 05298 20479, walked the track heading North East till I reached a gate turned left through a gate and headed up hill through the bracken where a trod has been stamped down to reach a stream and a fence, stepping over the fence I follwed the stream to above the plantation on the left, from here its a bracken/heather bash to the summit trig of Rhialgwm. Retraced my steps back to the car, Two and Three quarter mile in Two hours. (Supposed to take an hour and twenty minutes, I went this way to bypass the plantation which is completley impassable) | WAYNE ROWLETT | 29/10/2022 |
Rhialgwm from the SW. A revisit to bag it as a Dewey. Having visited it previously in 2018 to bag it as a Marilyn without difficulty, I thought it would be a straightforward ascent. How wrong I was!! The RoW was impassable due to fallen trees and brambles. So, I took the alternative route through the gate and up the mown field, which only led to chest high man eating bracken. A major battle then was played out with a combination of bracken, fallen tree, and knee deep heather, at the same time as being bombarded by a swarm of man sucking flies!! Eventually the trig was reached. Determined for a better descent, I worked my way across to Clawdd Mawr, from where an easy route down grassy fields (not access land) brought me back to the forest road without further incident. Just 6km with 300m ascent taking a long and hard 2 hours! Not coming here again! | silverwolf_alan | 06/08/2022 |
From Cefyn, up forestry track then lots of heather bashing to summit following SW side of forest / fence. Should have come back the same way but tried to go back to the stream - too much bracken, avoid! | twg27 | 24/06/2022 |
From minor road to SW. Drove to and parked at Y junction where PFP goes R past a barrier. No barrier on road, which continues rough but driveable. Marked PFP up through forest is blocked by very extensive wind-throw, so as JulieB, climb up field beyond the gate, across stream and overgrown grassy track to summit. May be easier to climb from N is summer due to bracken in field beyond gate. | Minto | 29/05/2022 |
From road to the north, parking opposite Foel-newydd. Forest track then over gate into field and followed forest edge to the open fellside. Rough heather to summit. Solo. I then followed forest edge to Clawd Mawr. | Dangerous Dave | 26/05/2022 |
From north near Cefn, could have driven up forestry track to high parking area since gates wedged open.. an old fella was sitting in his car up there. Followed track to col, detour to Hill fort ditch, slong east ridge then descent north down steep tussocky slope back to main track. Superb views | Nick Canute | 05/03/2022 |
From end of minor road to the West (room for about 3 cars max) 1km along track to gate where others have parked. Ignore PROW up left of river as many fallen trees. Go through gate then left through next gate. Head up hill through bracken (easy at this time if year) to bwf. Over bwf picked up contouring path to col above steep bit of river. Over stream and pick up remnants of a track/animal path to summit. Returned same route. 3.3miles 3hr 32 walking time. Met KeithbytheC just before summit. | JulieB | 29/12/2021 |
From Clawdd Mawr. Descent by fence ok, then rough going until near top. Returned to col and descended se on brackeny slopes of Clawdd Mawr. | KeithByTheC | 29/12/2021 |
park 0633 2100 track from west just drivable used row path visible then when out of plantation parhs come and go however visible path when on ridge take care with ruts in 'track' whch you cant see in dense trash | underhill | 23/09/2021 |
Parked on minor road to north nr Cefn, followed forestry track to south of Boncyn Melyn then short but rough going ascent to summit. Splendid views. Rough and later boggy descent NEwards to stile on edge of forest from where track is picked up again. Track shown on OS south of trig appears none existent. | steve_a | 04/08/2021 |
From the south east. Marked path looked overgrown so I ascended into the field on the east side of the stream. The bracken got taller and taller, and the ravine was deep with bad ground higher up. Returned on marked path, overgrown with brambles but preferable to head high bracken. | Topographer57 | 16/07/2021 |
For the 4th succesive day, I went up a hill on the same day as Topographer57. From the good parking space at 053204. Abandoned road then marked RoW- it is possible to follow to just S of HP but expect the fight (I could have done with orienteering gear) described by elizyanne and ger. Should have done it in April (but covid lockdowns then) when less bracken etc. A 3-day blitz-bag of 7 neglected Ma, saw no-one on them in fine, warm weather. This one had limited views of Snowdonia but opened up to Shrops and Herefords hills. | pwheeler | 16/07/2021 |
Parked at track junction by cattle grid, 063 210. back along track for approx 100yds to PRoW and up. | CJM | 18/09/2020 |
A shortish out and back from the end of the minor road. | rhalstead | 12/09/2020 |
From the good parking at 095230 to the East. Easily on forest roads and farm tracks to the heather and bracken Even here there are paths to follow all the way to the summit | climbingkershaw | 24/08/2020 |
Parked at 053204. Easy enough path then tracks through Heather. Windy. | NormanW | 12/03/2020 |
From end of tarmac, up through forest and rough ground to summit. | richardrosser | 15/10/2019 |
After coffee and cake at the Vyrnwy Dam VC. As others followed forest track after the end of the yellow road from the west. Parked at junction (SJ 063210) beyond path start. Path up to top of woods ok. Then it was very overgrown across the hill to the summit. With elizzyanne. Returned same way | GmacT | 01/08/2019 |
Path deteriorates as you go up to the stage of battling through heather, bracken and tussocks.Blessed is the view of the trig point when you start to lose the will to live in the heat!. Hill number 500 for me!!! | elizyanne | 01/08/2019 |
From E. Good parking at road end 095 230. With Clawdd Mawr | PeteN | 01/08/2019 |
As others followed forest track after the end of road..with care... parked at cattle grid beyond path start so took the open slope out of the wood with is overgrown with bracken at the upper section. Returned via the overgrown but much better path in the woods. 3/4 evening walk | N.Morters | 10/07/2019 |
A proper mini-mountain, with forest, streams, and open hillside - a great reminder of why we do the Marilyns. Great views on a fine spring day. Plenty of heather too! | huwthomas | 24/02/2019 |
Marilyn Walk 133. Rhialgwm from the SW. 5km taking 1h 30m. | silveracorn_alan | 25/09/2018 |
Approach from end of yellow road to SW. When out of forest, mapped track is very overgrown, but, best to stick with it, or drown in deep bracken. Good summit views. (5km, 240m). | ger | 25/09/2018 |
As Gill. Beware the gate at the top of the forest it has a broken post and falls on you when unlatched. | Lionel Bidwell | 12/08/2018 |
Parked in turning point where public roads meets the on forest road SJ 052204. Operated ham radio for SOTA on summit | G4OBK (Phil) | 13/01/2018 |
Parked by cattle grid on forest track (driveable with care even in a T-reg Fiesta) at SJ063210, then slogged through deep snow to summit. | Tony J | 16/12/2017 |
It's possible to get even a Golf (with almost no clearance) over the potholes on the forestry track and park below the footpath, at the track junction by the cattle grid. Easy, steep going up the path through the forestry, with all deadfall amenable to limbo dancing or avoidance. On the moor, there's an overgrown track almost all the way to the top, and a small path fills in the 100m gap to the trig. | Gill | 04/12/2017 |
Parked in forest access track at 044189 and then along narrow road/track to end of forest. Then NW up on intermittent track to gate and across, heather bashing, to summit. Very windy, cold but reasonably clear. | MichaelF | 23/11/2017 |
SOTA | mike.hartley | 09/09/2017 |
9/10 (Allt y Main/Galt y Goedhwch/Allt y Gader/Moel y Fronllwyd/Pen y Berth/Domen-Gastell Hill/Das Eithen/Clawd Mawr/Rhialgwm/Cilhaul) | Fergalh | 12/08/2017 |
This one was hard work to say the least. The positives: found some good off road parking at SJ 04361 19919 where some dog walkers told me they regularly used. And the views from the top with the heather in flower were excellent. The negatives: my route! Walked NE up the track but when it reached the end of the pasture I cut up steeply through the wood onto the track through the middle thinking it would give me a more gentle ascent. Don't. It is overgrown and uneven. On exiting the wood onto open land I failed to find any real track but found instead boggy ground, ferns and other tricky vegetation. Very tricky walking with a tugging dog in one hand. When I let him off he's get lost in the ferns but didn't seem too bothered. Back down was easier but never found a track. Once into woods descended via the FP which would have been a far better way to go up. | Father Ted | 12/08/2017 |
Laboured a bit up to this one through the long heather in the dark after having been on the go for nearly 12 hours today. | Alex C | 24/02/2017 |
With Trefor. Parked on track south of summit where it begins to seriously deteriorate. Followed track until near end of forestry then up steep track. Once out of woods a faint path led almost to summit | mike.hoult | 24/08/2016 |
Morning stroll with Minnie, parked at track jn 064 210, up track to jn with path up Llwybr Heulen to fenceline then up to Clawdd Mawr, top? in trees difficult to find, continued round fenceline to high point then heather bash to Rhialgwm top/trig, great views, down via vague track/sheep path then path back to jn. sunny & warm. | apricorum | 13/04/2016 |
Parked at end of adopted road to Pentre-aber-marchant at junction of forestrv (SJ0523820446)
Straight forward bag along forest track (ignore any unmapped left turns on first part of track) then left and round up footpath/track all the way to summit. Easy enough return as well if stick to reverse route. I took the direct route due south expecting to find a firebreak to route through forest. I did not but it was not too dense. A more fun descent but a bit too steep (hard work) for ascent. | mntainman | 26/02/2016 |
From carpark on B4391 at Penybontfawr at SJ 08825 24544. South to Bwlch Greolen then along the ridge to the top. | Alan Moore | 06/01/2016 |
With Jenx from the road end, easy access and good track through part felled woodland. Leads to gate then part old track part sheep track which lead quickly into summit. A dry day at last after 10 weeks of wet days. Lovely spot at the trig. | nordicstar | 28/12/2015 |
Wow... It didn't rain! Some fallen trees on the track but all passable. A good little hill. | jenx | 28/12/2015 |
Parked at 054204 and walked to cattle grid. (Those with robust cars could park here.) Ascended steeply beside the stream in the field (right of way in the forest looked like a fight) up onto the moors were a faint path lead to the trig point. Fine views on a beautiful spring evening. | mindlessflogger | 21/03/2015 |
From forest track end (041214) taking tracks to CROW land on north, then up fence and over some heather (not too bad). Came back to east and round south of hill on forest tracks (lots of felling). | SS | 06/07/2014 |
Parked at the end of the rough forest road from Abertridwr. With GB. | bolton | 24/06/2014 |
Parked by cattle grid E. of summit (063210) - Followed RoW up through forest - Through gate at top of forest and then W. along track to summit. (PM) | gerrybowes | 24/06/2014 |
with Jamie and got my exhaust caught by a branch on the forest track I decided to drive up, which yanked off middle section pipe of exhaust, eventually costing me about £70. Ouch | vegibagger | 28/05/2013 |
From N (15:25) along bridleway on map which is now a forest road. From bend at 016256 went SSE to corner of forest - now felled - then straight up to summit. Deep heather on plateau, hard going. Cloudy but dry. Finish 16:45 | dbb | 24/05/2013 |
Abandoned car in snow drift on minor road to South. Followed road and then a good track up though forest to open land above. | tim747 | 16/01/2013 |

Lovely morning in mid Wales recording my first P150=+ of the year Rhiaigwm. Done by parking due south then using forest track to gain footpath to head for summit from the east. | Dugswell2 | 25/02/2012 |
from near penygarnedd, along forestry tracks initially then up open pastures to heather top. some snow, some sun SOME view!! | stig_nest | 19/02/2012 |
Parked at SJ 044 201 and walked North easterly up the lane before following footpath to top. | heavyhorses | 20/12/2011 |
Short steep climb from the decaying road to the south. Parked at SJ 064 210 Good views at 9.15am | signyred | 20/06/2010 |
Start~ 055205. Walked further up the badly disintegrating lane and took the RoW track up through forest. The track actualy diverts off the RoW at the edge of the forest and climbs directly to the summit. | steve hudson | 09/12/2009 |
Walked with SH. Parked about 1m E of B4396 along narrow lane in forest. Followed forest track NE then signposted RoW N steeply up through forest and out onto open heathland. Followed path to trig point on heather covered summit. Dry but cool breeze. Good | wombourne | 09/12/2009 |
From North. Lovely hill until the last 500m where the heather and other stuff makes hard going. | destaylor | 12/05/2009 |
Nice walk along forest track to the southwest going to southeast of the mountain before climbing the marked footpath steeply. Once clear of the forest there is a 4x4 track heading roughly NW from which the trig point is clearly visible 100yds or so to the | clivevilla | 11/04/2009 |
