Nuttall walk 10.4 with a little diversion to see the waterfall. With R+R. HALFWAY THROUGH THE NUTTALL LIST!Dan Baddeley27/01/2024
Following on from Tarrenhendre, we followed an easy path, one point to note before you ascend this mountain, there is a nice path that has been cut away across the hillside that makes it alot easier to get to the top.Buckleymon07/09/2023
Day three of Dragons Back Raceemily06/09/2023
With Rufus from Corris Uchaf. Parked at forest track entrance on A487 and walked up to the 4th switchback and gate into pasture as others have described. Walked to top left of pasture then followed ridge line to summit of Mynydd Braich-Goch. Simple navigation along ridge to summit of Tarren y Gesail before descending steep grass on left of fence directly N. Hopped a fence and an easy 100m to highest forest track on right. Forest tracks back to the road. Lovely first visit to the Tarren hills, frozen ground and amazing sunset over the Dyfi forest.jacobrichmond09/12/2022
5/5 from Twywn to Kings YH. Arrived late since started at midday.davechaffey14/10/2022
Anticlockwise circular route of The Tarrens from Abergynolwyn. Easy going until the valley path from the Pont Llaeron on the return from Tarren y Gesail. The path was overgrown and clearly hadn't been maintained for a number of years.oldbagger2710/10/2022
Did this one first, but would probably go the other way round as the path down from Tarren Hendre is very steep and I would have preferred to have climbed it. Nav would also be easier the other way.andrewroberts28/08/2022

From Dolgoch waterfall walks that eventually led up through west side woodland and up onto open hillside for a long day over satellites of Tarrenhedre and Tarren y Gesail back down into Aberglynolwen three miles back along the main road to Dolgoch car park.vegibagger15/06/2022
An interesting anti-clockwise circuit from Abergynolwen station car park. L:ess than 100 yards along station link path took small path under tunnel straight up to forest track, right to hairpin then straight up again on small, steep bujt clear forest path to a second forest track, right a short way to exit onto open hill via gate. Open followed fence/path all the way to GR 717051 where path enters wood and down to bwlch. Up path along fence to top of Tarren y Gasail, down SW to join paths and track and then drop down to Gwernal station and station link path to start. A good route missing all the route complications.dickscroop23/11/2021
From Foel y Geifr to bwlch and dreaded steep ascent to summit. However new zigzag path takes sting out of climb. Returned to Abergynolwyn by way of more zigzagging tracks through forestry.lordtonult21/09/2021
Route from the Centre for Alternative Technology.MollyT1319/06/2021
Along ridge from Tarren Hendre and climbed from SE where new looking zigzag machine cut track has appeared?? Trig falling apart. High point marked on map as 50m from trig but all looked the same to me. Descended SW to enter forestry then main track to valley. Tea at Aberglynolwyn railway station recommended.richardrosser19/06/2021
Tarrenhendre and Tarren y Gesail as a clockwise circuit from Pennal. A tough day starting at sea level - 23km and 1120m height gain.AndrewP13/04/2021
from Abergynolwyn, via Tarrenhendre, as per Nuttals.IanHHill10/10/2020
Walked over very early having camped close to Tarrenhendre. The cloud was just lifting which provided a great atmosphere. I particularly liked Foel y Geifr that I walked over on route to Tarren y Gesail.morgs4mountains17/09/2020
After Tarrenhendre. Took much longer than anticipated. Difficulty finding a path through the forest. Also bagged one Dodd and a Tump.NormanW14/03/2020
First of five tops following Nuttalls nine mile route from Abergynolwyn, Summiting Tarrrenhendre, Mynydd Rhyd-Galed, Foel y Giefr, Braich-Goch and Tarren y Gesail. A three mile extension is needed to reach Mynydd Braich-Goch.WAYNE ROWLETT01/03/2020
Took car up road then track higher up towards disused quarry. Track then as others Gill etc... through forest where there is considerable felling operations at present. Up steep grassy slope to summit. 3/4 Marilyn, onto TarrenhendreN.Morters18/01/2020
4/4. As Nuttall book. Tarrenhendre, Mynydd Rhyd-Galed, Foel y Geifr and Tarren y Gesail. Showers but a dry finish. Lovely waterfalls at start and enjoyable ridge. No time to divert to East Top on ridge as wild wind there.nickywood126/09/2019

Round of Tarren y Gesail and Tarren Hendre from end of public road up from Abergynolwyn. Road is steep and narrow, then after two gates it is no better than a typical estate track. Followed Gill route over TG as far as TH.Topographer5726/08/2019

1/2 Marilyn day. Ascent of the Tarrens from Abergynolwyn. A lovely sunny start, clouded over and ended wet. Some tough sections, grazed leg on brambles! 17km taking 5h20m. (S)silveracorn_alan11/08/2018
Parked by Bryn Eglwys quarry, on the grass verge. The farmer came past and advised that the normal baggers path is a quagmire, and gave permission to go up the forestry road contouring below Foel Pandy. This makes a dead easy and quick walk, despite apparent distance. Keep taking the right forks, always up hill, and then finally a long straight stretch which comes out high up on the SW ridge of Tarren y Gesail. Easy to the top, then a good path all the way to Tarrenhendre. At the summit, there's a line of posts leading down the NE ridge, and this leads to a good enough path through the trees onto the logging road. It might be possible to descend through the forest to the start, but it was sooo hot, I just pogged along the track, quite a long way but quick enough.Gill21/04/2018
Continuation of walk from Mynydd Braich-goch. Followed the forest edge on a faint path SW to the bwlch, then up, steeply at first, to the summit. Descended back to Corris Uchaf by using the forest roads. Solo.Man of Kernow120/03/2018
#638 As per Nordicstar, who forgot to mention the 'unsuitable for motor vehicles' sign and cones at the bottom of the hill and the three gates! However, Jen was spot on with her description, wet!tim74716/03/2018
With Val. Rain for much of the walk and no views from summit. Parked at Abergynolwen and followed road up valley. A big zig-zag on a track took us up to the forest. Followed tracks through forest to open hillside. Up fence line on faint path to ridge which continued to summit. Returned same route having ascended Tarren Hendre previously.mike.hoult12/08/2017

From car park south of Corris taking tracks and firebreaks to Mynydd Braich-goch. Along and down fence line through some felling to get to col above Coed Tyglas before taking track to close to Craig Goch (bwf to negotiate to get to summit). That bagged, came back to col then took track to high point and cut back to ridge and up to Tarren y Gesail. Returned by paths and tracks passing Cwn Cadian (owner pointed out path was not in use but was happy to let me push through - he wasn't joking - should take row at junction heading north east).SS14/05/2017
Nuttalls walk 10.4 from AbergynolwynTony J22/10/2016
id the Nuttalls walk. Had no problem between the hills. A bit confused starting the walk in the forest but found the right track. Coming down of Tarren y Gesail did not go far enough down the hill in SE directions. Picked up a track part way down as it was on the edge of what is now the forest. Probably added a mile on doing this.johnjennison16/08/2016

Took a pretty much direct line to get here from the minor road. 1:50000 map lacks details that would have helped with route finding. Pretty damp underfoot, but got worse once the rain set in.jenx26/06/2016
Drove up minor road south from Abergynolwyn. One gate then parking at large turning area @240m. Followed track to new barn on hillside then through gap in trees to make direct ascent of SW slopes of Tarren y Gesail. From top followed the used path to bealach then along ridge w tops to increasingly cloud bound Tarrehendre. The main cairn clear, small cairn suggested on the hag has gone, went to the GR and all other possible tops. Back to bealach below and weaved through paths not all on 1:50k (use 1:25k) to get back to car.nordicstar26/06/2016
11.5 mile circular walk from Abergynolwyn, walked up lane to end then then track to forest and final pull onto Tarren Y Gesail, followed path down and gained ridge at Foel y Geifr, then carried on to Mynydd Rhyd-Galed East Top and Mynydd Rhyd-Galed, then onto Tarrenhendre. bit too warm for us all. From summit followed poles along path back into the forest where the trees have taken over the path, followed forest lanes back to Abergynolwyn, good walk. Hamish and Huey the spaniels finished with a good swim in the river.Saggers04/06/2016

From Tarrenhendre and Foel y Geifr up the second long grass slope of the day. Blowing wildly at the top and sat behind the trig for a quick snack. I followed the Nuttalls descent which, as others have said, is terribly boggy between the disused reservoir and the quarry. I was sinking up to my knees at times. I wonder if the worst of this can be bypassed by cutting through the felled bit of forest higher up the slope?Herbert Anchovy31/10/2014
Climbed from Foel Pandy through felled forest onto forest track and then through firebreak over fence and then directly upto the summit. Beautiful views to coast. Steep grassy ascent in sunshine. Descent on bearing to next top en route to Machynlleth. I lost my compass on the way down.Dazingdale09/05/2014
From Abergynolwyn (SH 67759 06951) - Good track to Bryn Eglwys Quarry, very boggy and mostly pathless to Pont Llaeron. Very steep ascent handrailing fence at edge of deforested area to stile at SH 70403 05457, grassy path then to the summit. Descended back to the stile then followed good forest track heading generally N then SE, eventually converging with the outward path back to the start. Route of ascent not recommended!david23020124/03/2014
From Abergynolwyn. Nuttalls' walk 10.4 from Vol 1, Wales. With Penda. 1120-1620. Clear all day but very cold and the odd shower. Didn't see another soul all day on these hills, even on a Saturday. Easy going from Tarrenhendre most of the way; a short stop on Foel y Geifr was followed by a ridge where the book suggested crossing a stile; I did, but the path was so indistinct and overgrown that I retraced my steps and kept to the south of the plantation.
