Ascent from Gospel Pass Stone Circle via Hay Bluff and along Offa's Dyke path. Overcast, but good visibility. Summit location is interesting!Cumbriancyclist16/10/2023
Weather beautiful when I left Pontardawe at 06.00 this morning. Black Mountains covered in low cloud and quite cold. Walked up from Gospel Pass. No views. Now, I've been up here a number of times but unsure if I ever visited the 'top'. Think I must of as I had walked the path a number of times. Now, I have for sure.Dusty05/06/2023
Climbed from the car park at Little Black Hill. Ascended the obvious route via the Cat's back ridge to the trig of Black Hill - this arete was lovely and narrow - really a highlight of the day. Lovely views east into England and west towards the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons in Wales. Continued onwards along a minor path on the much broader ridge to the northwest. Had to leave the minor path and go across heathery terrain to reach the Offa's Dyke path. Turned southeast to reach the rather ill-defined highest point of Herefordshire - which is either called Black Mountain or Twyn Llech (prefer the latter). Difficult to say exactly where it is, but the website seems to have it right. Pen-y-Fan clearly in view. This was our 2nd county top of the day on our 3 day 10 county top challenge with my school group (26 students aged 14-15, plus 2 colleagues). The students seemed to find the name of the hill on the other side of the Gospel Pass amusing. I'm not sure why! Returned the same way.jamessteel10004/04/2023
Peak - 703m. Hike Stats: 6.8km; 2 hours; 254m ascent. Simple out and back from Hay Bluff carpark to pick up the peak.complicatedaussie22/01/2023
Parked at Gospel Pass. Up to Twmpa, along the Darren Lwyd ridge and down to Capel y ffin, before climbing back up to ODP on the ridge and Black Mountain South top, Black Mountain and Hay Bluff. Very windy and in & out of the cloud on the ridges but largely dry. With Gillian. One of my very first wild camps was on Hay Bluff, many years ago.richard6904/01/2023

A day I'll never forget, a mix of emotions when going up the Eastern Face of Hatterall Ridge. My cousin and I were very satisfied when we finally reached the bog and off the very steep face of the mountain. After 40 Minutes from then, we reached the Summit of Herefordshire and of course right next to us, Wales. Then walked too Hay Bluff before then walking too Black Hill and down Cat's Back in the sunset. Very memorable and dramatic day.DavidHiner27/10/2021

Parked at road junction to N of ridge, followed Offa's Dyke path up to ridge and along to the summit, which is hard to determine as it has no marker, so I made sure I had passed it before turning round. Afterwards to Hay Bluff and Twmpa.IanHHill02/10/2021

Cycled up from Llanthony Priory hotel to Capel-y-ffin. Walked steeply up through the bracken on the Hereford side and along Offa’s Dyke path. Then on via Hay Bluff, Gospel Pass and Lord Hereford’s Knob and back along the ridge to Chwarel-y-Fan. Dropped back down to the valley floor to retrieve our bikes. Blisteringly hot!pclyndes21/07/2021

From SE starting at Blaen. Parking marginal. A nice grassy path cuts through the bracken WNW up to a kissing gate at 462m but there the path marking the RoW on the map ends and it's animal tracks through head high bracken then tussocky heath all the way to Offa's dyke path. Featureless summit.Topographer5705/09/2019
Fantastic walk in great conditions. Got to Hay Bluff by 11.25 then the top at 11.45. Enjoyed the challenge of the quick pace in both directions without forgetting to admire the views of both Wales and England in one go.acolling21/08/2019

With E. Warm and sunny day. Superb visibility. From Hay Bluff car park up paths to trig point (painted white with the Welsh red dragon on all four sides) along summit ridge. Flat summit makes it difficult to identify actual Herefordshire historic county summit so walked along path for about 500m between SO 25524 35524 and SO 25580 35020 to cover all bases. Also stepped over the county boundary to bag the newly resurveyed Black Mountain summit. No feature. Returned down Offa’s Dyke Path to minor road and car park.Beeliner12/07/2019

11 mile walk from car park below Black Darren, walked along hillside road to junction and across fields briefly to road again then car park, up the Cats Back to Black Hill trig, struggled in snow onto Black Mountain (2nd visit) then continued along ridge on easier terrain to North Darren trig eventually descending back down to the car park, the day started off cloudy/foggy but cleared and got very sunny later on.DanTrig06/04/2019
A repeat walk to visit the new top, as I was in the area. Given the proximity to the path and the lack of any perceptible difference in height, I wouldn't have any moral qualms about claiming it anywayColin Crawford29/03/2019

Re-bagged to make sure, from Hay Bluff car park, easily along the Offa's dyke path, but very windy and a bit damp. No views. Found the highest point and was surprised to find that this did not coincide with the summit grid ref. Myrddyn's survey in 2019 has solved the mystery.Gill13/10/2017

Lovely day out in the Black Mountains with a nice circular 16km loop from Capel-y-ffin. Went up the steep slope of Darren Lwyd and then carried on along the ridge to Lord Hereford's knob/Twmpa. Then crossed the gospel pass to summit Hay Bluff, before following Offa's Dyke path back along Black Mountain and descending at the vision to get back to my starting point. Lots of Mountain ponies and ravens on the way. Also spotted a Wheatear and a few Swallows who can't be too far away from starting their migrations back to their African winter grounds.Gerry the Ranger17/09/2017

Left Offa's Dyke path, turned west and crossed Bwlch yr Efengyl to bag Twmpa, onwards to Rhos Dirion, then 4 mile leisurely hike southwards along ridge to Chwarel y Fan, then descend to Capel y Ffin. 1st hill on my Offas Dyke path walk from Hay-on-Wye to Pandy. Probably the most indistinct Marilyn summit yet visited in misty conditions, visibility about 50 metres ahead. With Jenx from Upper Blaen to the SE. At road head good parking near stream crossing. Old lane leads to sheep folds/firlds. Took direct line up stream to high gate N of that line. Zig zag up buttress (note would be hard in bracken season) then through heather and tussocky grass to ridge path. Summit cairn missing, one by path is not top. Headed little further south on way back to use old pony track /drainage line? more easily back to start.nordicstar19/02/2016

Walk 3 Hatterrall Ridge from 'Walk! the Brecon Beacons', except came back along the Cat's Back rather than via the Olchon Valley. Parked at Black Hill picnic site, headed down into and across the valley and up to the ridge. Some of the sunken paths in the valley blocked by trees, bracken very high on way up to ridge. Slight confusion about finding right path to turn back along but easy once we found it.clyoung31/08/2015

Nuttalls route from Capel-y-ffin at SO 25485 31443 (315m). Note - instead of the Nuttalls' slightly messy start we walked along the road for 1km to a public footpath and footbridge over the Afon Honddu at SO 26375 31026. Public ROW then ascends up to a gate and just to the left across the track is the start of the steep zigzag path up to the first hill Black Mountain South Top.David Gradwell20/08/2013

From car park at SO287328, up over Black Hill to Hay Bluff and then south down the Offa's Dyke path to take in both Black Mountain tops. Back tracked and took the footpath at SO271319 down into the Olchon Valley and followed the road back to the car park. Did a similar route in 2014 starting from SO297299, following the road north west before crossing the Olchon Valley via a ROW and doing almost the same circular without having to backtrack. The path down from Offa's Dyke to the car park at SO284305 is marked with a small cairn.islamidget28/07/2012

On a cold, wet and misty day one cannot help but wish that the ancient woad-clad English natives had decided to concede the whole of this accursed range to the Cymru, thereby alleviating the necessity for later generations, attempting to ascend all the English 2000feet plus mountains, the chore of walking up this one.moorsman01/07/2012
Climbed up to Black Mountain eastern ridge from Llanthony and then followed ridge to summit (somewhat undistinguished point on Offa\'s Dyke path and with limited views). Really good views over Wye Valley from Hay bluff to the north and over Herefordshire and beyond from a narrow point on ridge to the south. Had planned to do a circular walk via Ffawddog Ridge, which includes the Monmouth County top but strong winds followed by torrential rain caused the curtailment of the excellent ridge walking at Gospel Pass and a return to Llanthony via the Honddu valley.
