7th time around the fabulous Fairfield Horseshoe, on a glorious sunny clear, calm autumn day, with low mist in the valleys to start. A beautiful day to be on the Lakeland Fells, with L. Overnight frost on the grass but warm in the sun then inevitably chilly in a breeze on top. Saw a lonesome foxhoud looking for its pack -peering into the corries, but ignoring us people. We heard a horn in the far distance. 26th ascent of Fairfield in total.Chris Pearson12/10/2023

From Grasmere and up Stone Arthur and along to Great Rigg, Fairfield, Hart Crag, Dove Crag and Little Hart Crag and down to Ambleside from the Scandale Pass. I may have climbed some of these hills back in 1996 but cant recall if I had reached the summits or not. So after a long wait Ive revisited them all. Weather hot and sunny views to the Pennines and Southern Scotland. Time just under 5 hours for 11 miles.isabelle09/08/2022

Solo walk from Brothers Water. High Hartsop (519m) first and Little Hart Crag (637m). Then another down and up to reach Red Screes (776m), then Middle Dodd (642m). Then I made the most difficult detour of the day, dropping to Stangs (474m) so I could bag the summit and then climbing all the way back to to Dove Crag (792m) and Hart Crag (822m). I then made a detour over to Great Rigg (766m) returning via my highest point of the day at Fairfield (822m) before walking back to Hart Crag and descending the ridge via the two summits on Hartsop above How (586m). A challenging walk as once on the fells I seemed to be constantly going up and down with very little level walking and the step counter measured 25 miles of 'real' distance walked. It was clear and sunny the entire day, some of the best views I've had up here for ages and relatively quiet considering the weather and time of year.meltdiceburg12/06/2021

Second day in the Lake District and the Fairfield Horseshoe.JazDisney03/12/2019
Great way to spend your birthday. A fantastic day running Leg 2 of the Bob Graham with Brett and Mark. Cloudy throughout the day, with soft snow and some ice on the tops, visibility very poor, but not bad enough to need to take bearings. One missed top (Watsons Dodd) so had to recip. Very tough section, out and back to Fairfield, wanted to give up! Jonesy ran out of water but decided not to mention this to us. 5hrs 41minutes for the leg, with a distance of 15.5 miles so not in the right ball park to take on the full challenge...yet. Cough head, great Dodd, Watsons Dodd, stybarrow Dodd, raise, white side, helvellyn LM, Helvellyn, nethermost pike, dollywaggon pike, Fairfield, and seat sandal.Jim Baz17/11/2019

From Great Rigg made the final part of this ridge to Fairfield. shouldn't of been as hard work as it was but with a strong wind constantly hitting our faces and deep snow this was challenging. to look at reminded me of the ridge between Frostwick and Thornthwaite Crag. After a steady pace made it to the summit to be greeted by several cairns and wind shetlers. after my pictures of Cofa Pike and St Sundays Crag stopped sat down and enjoyed several Gold bars.Scotty 2 Hotty09/02/2018

Having nit managed Rydal horseshoe last time due to bad weather, we thought we'd give it another go. This time blessed with better weather, we did the classic clockwise route from Rydal Hall. Following the ridge along Heron Pike, Great Rigg and on to Fairfield. We had some lunch here overlooking St Sunday Crag and the south end of Ulswater. We then continued along the ridge to Hart crag, Dove Crag, High and Low Pike. We finished in Ambleside for a cuppa and a scone. 6hr10mins: 20km; 1220mByronHaywood27/08/2016

17th top of 18 today on the second leg of my improvised Bob Graham round starting from Craglands guesthouse in Keswick and finishing at Burtharlyp Howe youth hostel in Grasmere. I visited Castlerigg stone circle en-route before climbing Threlkeld Knotts, Clough head, Calfhow Pike, Little Dodd, Great Dodd. Watson's Dodd, Stybarrow Dodd, Raise, Whiteside Hill, Helvellyn lower man, Catstye Cam, Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, High Crag, Dollywaggon pike, Cofa pike and then a short scramble upto the summit plateau. I explored all the potential high points which took around 10 mins.Dazingdale07/06/2016

Culmination of the Fairfield Horseshoe - make sure you have fine weather and the views from the summit are just breathtaking. Do the horseshoe walk anti clockwise starting out of Ambleside - make sure you get Nook Lane right at the beginning or you're off into another valley! It's the first left before you get to the pub up the hill opposite the car park.RobandAli14/09/2013

A circuit I have been meaning to do for so long now. Have looked at it from Ambleside and Lake Windermere cruises and finally got round to doing it. Not the greatest weather, mist, mizzle, drizzle and rain at the start but hoping to get out above the clouds and was not disappointed. After climbing up via Nab Scar onto Heron Crag and over Great Rigg I finally popped out of the cloud on Fairfield. Wow, what a view, looking down over St Sunday crag and Cofa Pike was very impressive. Cloud still welling up from Rydal Head so could not see that direction until well on the way down. Very pleasant trip out and pleasantly surprised how fit I was. Managed the trip without the help of Ibuprofen too! Few more Wainwrights ticked off.Mark T12/09/2013

Our second attempt at the Fairfield Horseshoe was much more successful, and much more fun. Firstly, it was sunny and secondly, we had great views all around. We decided to try the anit-clockwise route, in case we didn't finish, but we did it easily. We were joined for lunch by a very confident sheep, who came right up to us, looking for food, which we gave her.Connor04/06/2010

I can recall at least 7 visits, by every possible ridge. Today, Pete and I walked up Deepdale. There are interesting ways onto the hills from this valley before you get to the Hause; the way up Fairfield via Greenhow End is certainly one. We had this route to ourselves. There is a sort of faint path up here from Deepdale, but it is better to follow AW on pg 7 of Fairfield. Not a hard route at all, except for the route finding up virtually unfrequented terrain. We returned by a favourite ridge, over Cofa Pike and St Sunday Crag and added Arnison Crag, a new Wainwright for both of us. Fine, high cloud- probably needed for the Greenhow End route.pwheeler07/09/2006
With Dad. From Hart Crag. Dad's highest peak to date. The clear weather gave us great views of St Sunday Crag, Deepdale and the whole of the Rydal Beck valley. Only the very highest point of Helvellyn in mist. Onto Great Rigg.James McKnight04/09/2006

Climbed Huttable Crag gully in snow. Mountain rescue helicopter with Tony's friend in it popped by to say hello! Was hovering right behind us as we were climbing, waving out the window at us. Once up we looked down Scrubby crag but too steep to descend so stepped down Black Tippet after bagging the top. First introduction to snow and ice work. Stag weekend too.Mark T20/02/1994

On my BG. Thankfully the large meal (tinned stew& carrots & rice pudding) I forced down at Dunmail kicked in climbing up here after a wretched struggle up Seat Sandal. Accompanied my Mike F on this overnight leg as darkness drew in -finding Mick G in his tent at Grisedale Tarn after the descent by shouting / torchlight with spare food supplies - non of which I actually wanted when it came to it!Chris Pearson27/06/1992

Joan, Peter, Ian & Lee April 9th. Early mist didn't prevent a prompt departure up Nab Scar. The weather took us by surprise. White out and hoarfrost at 2000' snowing on top. Ian became hypothermic and we piggybacked him for miles down the ridge into Patterdale. A traumatic experience but all wiser and safer. A warm taxi ride from Hartsop to Rydal cost £8 for the four + two dogs.PeteF09/04/1990

Wednesday was absolutely clear views with some high cumulus. Arrived Rydal Hall at 9.0am. 10 on top of Nab Scar - cloud on Crinkle Crags. 11 on Heron Pike. Ian's boots caused blisters on heels so walked barefoot up to Great Man Rigg. Spectacular views from Solway Firth to the Fylde. After lunch Peter, Johny and Mummy with the dogs took 30 mins to get up Fairfield. Returning to Heron Pike it was v. hot as the wind dropped. Many people were struggling up astonished to see our little band of tinies skipping barefoot. Then off down to Alcocks Tarn - did we need cooling down! It was so lovely stayed from 3pm - 7pm having a picnic tea before wending our way back to the car. Johny aged 5 was declared the champion of the day. 1st summer at Uni and off to stay at Ruthwaite Lodge (75p a night) booked for 7 nights by our YHS group a simple two room bothy (big gas cylinders for cooking, water from stream, coke burning stove (lovely), and slit trench for toilet-(yuk)-in a fantastic position underneath Helvellyn - only reached by a long walk up from any direction. Today I came up the Low Pike ridge from Ambleside bagging the string of tops in sunshine carrying a heavy pack. Subsequently 17 ascents logged by 2010.Chris Pearson06/07/1982
