Gummer's How tourist path from the CP to the S. Nice path frequented by the local Laing cows who have walked along the path to Birch fell making the grassy paths to Birch Fell a bitof a quagmire. A wooden piece of fencing in the otherwise barbed wire fence gives access into the forest and a meander around the trees takes one to the summit mound.matty1971b27/03/2024

Gummer's How tourist path from the CP to the S. Nice path ... lovely summit. Continued along narrower grassy paths to NW of Birch Fell. A wooden piece of fencing in the otherwise barbed wire fence gives access into the forest and a meander around the trees takes one to the summit mound. Returned N to a stone wall and paralleled this eastwards until picking up the ROW heading S to the road. Road Walk in the dusk back to CP.summitter07/10/2023
Parked in forestry car park to S. Good path up with amazing views from the top. Obviously a popular locals walk and several school groups out on the day. Blustery but sunny. Solo.richard6929/09/2023

I have wanted to do gummers how for a while and having done it I want to keep going back. Parking at the gummers how layby, myself, Bec, Lily and Myla who had all done amazing to get up at 6am to get here set off. Gorgeous wooded rocky path leads to and simply scramble to the top. the views continued to excite and kept getting better and better. At the top we were joined by a herd of cows which at 1st made Bec nervous but soon realised they were harmless. We sat just under the summit and had porridge for breakfast soaking in the views of Windermere. Absolutely stunning and could of stayed there all day. We made the short trip back passed more cows and the girls slept all the way home. Fantastic fell.Scotty 2 Hotty14/06/2020

Walk up from the parking area with my naughty daughters. It was cool and windy but we dodged the showers for the most part,. We climbed up the steep way. Summit Trig falling to bits. Views were superb across to the high hills of the Lakes to the Dales and Morecambe Bay. We saw a Sparrowhawk being mobbed by some Crows. Time taken 44 minutes for 1.3 miles.isabelle24/08/2018
1st of three tumps on a circuit from Fell Foot Wood, taking just under 2 hours. I took tracks through the woodland then crossed a break in the wall to gain the road then on the good footpath upto the top. A notice says that they are using Luing cattle as part of the management plan to increase the botanical diversity of this fell. Quite nice as I was on Luing earlier this year! Unfortunately a bit misty today but Belle Isle easily detectable further up Windermere. Next up..Birch Fell.Dazingdale12/08/2018

No. 7 of seven M6 Marilyns on a Bank Holiday. Getting late, so the lay-by near the footpath was clear, and no-one on the hill. Easy path, stone steps for much of the way, then little rocky bits at the top. Views are quite good but Windermere is very industrial looking, marinas, boats, etc.Gill26/08/2017
WOs 77 and 78; Bs 64 and 65. Followed W's route from car park - very busy. Made the mistake of pushing on to the Birkett, Birch Fell - now forested and across foul bog. Only found summit with GPS after fighting my way up the hill through thick forest. Then drove round to do Staveley Fell from Sow How lane. Easy forest track in and out but W's return path untraceable and whole fell covered in deep brushwood from felling and thick heather. Another very unpleasant hill.BURGESS07/08/2017

AW is grumpy about this hill with lots of ye and references to granny hill walking but it's well worth an hour or so. We took Mom while Dad had to go into hospital, she resented the granny comments and it was quite a battle to reach the top in near gale conditions. This hill has a fabulous, famous Windermere view and it was enlivened today by clouds being violently torn of the higher hills to be replaced by black showers a few minutes later. For us, it was utterly the place to be for a short while- with brother, Pete, too.pwheeler05/03/1994

Joan, Colin, Peter and Ian. Easter Monday March 31st. Awoke to snow and thick mist - and the door open (thank you Ian). The sun broke through creating the most beautiful effects as the snow rapidly dripped off the trees. a.m. a walk up Gummers How as the mists clear and then another swim before a sumptuous lunch at Beach Hill. p.m. a walk through Tilberthwaite to Little Langdale to visit the Cathedral and walk through the old mine shafts. As we return the tops are clear and beautiful. Rain sets in at 8pm as Colin leaves.PeteF31/03/1986

Returning to Barrow from Southport. Amazed to find dozens of people on this hill and cars at the road top -even an ice cream van (Easter Monday)- had expected a quiet 'Outlying Wainwright' hill. Mingled with crowds and families kitted out with boots and breeches. A fine viewpoint.Chris Pearson08/04/1985

The evening walk up Gummers How was in misty still conditions The boys came down thro' the bracken with much fun and getting wet. (Also 1982) A walk up Gummers How has made a bracing start to many weekends - Just 40mins from the car park on the Fell Foot road - often arriving on a Friday evening.PeteF25/07/1983

From the car park south of this hill the walk up is straightforward but great. The view of southern Windermere is one of top spots of South LakelandChinnockCblank
