Parked at road bend to the NW for Flounders Folly. Took the direct steep ascent and was thankful for the hazel hand support on the slippery mud. Visited hp, tower and trig. Descended via the zigzag gentler path. With Gillian. | richard69 | 07/11/2023 |
Parked area to NW of Flounders Folly at Start of the footpath. Took the direct route which involved hands and knees near the top section as very wet and slippy. Climbed Folly as it was an open day, visited Trig and High Point on track. Returned via the Gentle footpath. | Jephcote83 | 29/10/2023 |

Parked in corner 457854. Took the easier/longer route to the tower. Early morning, 2nd and possibly even better English inversion. Sunny on top and stunning. | iangalbraith | 29/11/2022 |

From north with Lesley in showers, up and down the easy path. Passed an Orthodox Jewish family of eleven making their way down. We thought this was unusual but later the same day met about 60 Orthodox Jewish teenage boys on Caer Caradoc | Nick Canute | 15/08/2022 |
Parked near a cow field, walked to path which was in the shade of the forest near the summit was lots of ferns blocking the path, at the top was a big stone tower with a sign and some wooden seats next to it. With whole family. | speedyclimber | 27/07/2022 |
Parking on corner to NW at start of ROW. Took the gentler route up, enjoyed the woodland shade on a muggy day. Nice views to W. Picnicked on benches at the top. With whole family. 122m ascent | RoguePulsar | 27/07/2022 |
Part of the Shropshire Walking Festival | andrewcoles | 02/04/2022 |
8.2 mile circular from little car park at Harton Hollow nature reserve. Along track to very dull but very easy Wolverton Hill top. We then followed Wenlock Edge on muddy trails to footpath near Moorwood farm, followed this to minor road then onto Callow Hill via the easy un-steep route. Nice views from the top stretching into Wales including the Brecon Beacons. From here we descended the same way (the steep route being far too slippery) and followed path to minor road, along road to Middlehope college then tracks and paths into Acorn Coppice onto Diddlebury Common. The black-dashed trail in the woods on the map does exist! We climbed easily over fence into field where summit is. Afterwards we descended through woods to minor road at Burwood and followed this back to the edge and car park. 402m ascent. Afterwards we drove to and bagged Brown Clee Hill (2nd time) and Clee Burf. Perfect clear, sunny and warm. No one about. | DanTrig | 14/03/2022 |
A very pleasant afternoon stroll from Craven Arms station along quiet lanes via Lower Dinchope. Came directly up from the NW, the higher slopes quite slippery and involved a bit of branch grabbing! Fabulous views from the summit area. Headed SW and zig-zagged down through the wood. On to Norton Camp. | thesweetcheat | 26/02/2022 |
Short walk up from the corner of the road directly below the tower, up the very steep slope and turned right after the tower to find a more gradual stepped (much better) way back down. A pleasant short walk whilst travelling. | nickywood1 | 05/02/2022 |
Walk with R from the Craven Arms Discovery Centre, a variation to the “Hills and Dales walk”. | Dan Baddeley | 12/12/2021 |
From parking to NW. Up the steep way, down the easy way (see board at start) | PeteN | 25/11/2021 |
Good parking to the NW near the Moorwood turnoff. Went up and down the less steep way. | paulhilder | 23/08/2021 |
Choice of 2 walks to the summit from the little area where you can park heading North from Lower Dinchope. The longer, less steep or the short and steep (signposted as such). The short and steep which I took is very, very steep and was glad to be wearing climbing approach shoes! Fantastic views from the top and the tower really is something to behold up close. | jamiequackers | 07/08/2021 |
park point 214 take steep route up and down may be to steep if very wet folly and trig point | underhill | 24/06/2021 |

OK parking at SO456853. Up the disappointingly unexciting 'steep' route (dry) and back down the gradual route which was as slippery as an ice rink | Isbjorn | 13/04/2021 |
On a walk from Craven Arms. Blustery and cool today. We took the difficult route up which was super steep (as expected) but also quite muddy and slippery, most amusing. | greboicus | 27/03/2021 |
Steep and slippy path. | Play2End | 18/08/2020 |
From Wolverton Hill. Listened to On Wenlock Edge by Vaughan Williams then Gurney as we walked through the woods. Sat awhile by the tower, loved the ridge NE with fine view of Shropshire. High summer feel, insects a buzzing, getting warmer. Descent via Hill End. Back to car at 14:45. | Wycombe Wanderer | 29/07/2020 |
Managed to pull bumper off front of car driving into a ditch whilst turning right. Parking difficult. Went up through field to where it said path was but totally overgrown nettles so went through field on other side of barbed wire. Saw two ladies at near top who asked why I was over other side of fence and that there was going to be no way back across. I found a spot where two barbed wire fences met and were strong enough to get a good foothold to cross to tower. Back same way. Raining | ketzster | 16/06/2020 |
with K, walked up from Strefford. Last steep bit hard work, being slippy too, so returned by gentler route. | IanHHill | 20/03/2020 |

Craven Arms - Callow Hill - Norton Camp - View Edge - Oaker Wood - Burrow - Craven Arms. | Mark Jackson | 27/07/2019 |
1/4 from the northeast, parking at the kink in the road. Easy zig zag up, short steep way down. Trig visited also, though the head high vegetation was a pain | N.Morters | 11/07/2019 |

Up zig zag path from parking for folly. Ground by tree to NE does seem higher. | prwild | 21/10/2018 |
from road corner to NW. found the short way up and took long way down. | KC | 05/10/2018 |
Day off work so went over to Shropshire to try some Marilyns - lovely hills. Easy parking to NW at road bend. Missed the difficult route and took the easy-glad I did when I saw it from the top. | Mark Sims | 14/09/2018 |
6/7 Marilyn day. From the road to the NW, up zig zag track. Visited both the tower and trig. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 09/08/2018 |

Footpath from Lower Dinchope. Space for one vehicle on roadside. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 06/08/2018 |
Parked 457854 in layby / gateway by Callow Hill sign. Walked up along bendy path as straight route up was overgrown and too steep. Came to tower first and walked passed about 100m from tower to trig point in bushes on left. Super backdrop to trig was a corn field. Part of Flounders Folly. | Hippy77 | 01/08/2018 |
Straight up and down from NW | Clive G | 23/06/2018 |
3/7 today. Parked to NW and wandered up obvious tracks to summit area. Went to trig point first then along to tower and beyond looking for highest potential ground. Myrddyn Phillips joined me for this hill and he trimbled the various potential high points - I await his blog for the results. | assynt_bob | 04/05/2018 |
Approach from NW. Tower closed. | ger | 30/04/2018 |
From NW at road bend. Went straight up to Tower and nearby HP came back down zig zag path. Good views. | PeterD | 22/04/2018 |
Excellent walk up
And there's a nice geocache on the way was parked next to one too | Sossick | 25/11/2017 |
3/12M Track above morwood. | robertphillips | 19/10/2017 |
A nice stroll up from the track above Moorwood. I strolled up the zig zag footpath, because it gave good views and the diretissima is overgrown and nasty looking. The Tower was, of course, closed. Quick stroll to the trig and back the same way. | Gill | 12/10/2017 |
Walk/running short loop. Fine weather, breezy. After View Edge. Working. | Rounsfell | 29/09/2017 |
After Burrow, climbed from Strefford, then descended past trig point and via Lower Dinchope back to Craven Arms. A good 17 mile walk for three Marilyns. | AlanD | 20/09/2017 |
Imposing tower beckons from base of the hill. Ascend through mixed woodland, lots of fungi about to reach summit and Flounders Folly (1817). Also visited the trig further along the ridge with wide open views into Corve-dale with the Clee hills beyond. Dropped to Lower Dinchope the burial place of Grove Sprightly (Racehorse), lane to the ford at Strefford then back along Wenlock Edge. A quiet pretty place. | briandavies | 17/09/2017 |
Pleasant walk up to summit and trig. Folly not open which was a shame. | isabelle | 05/08/2017 |
Zig zag path to tower.Early morning to avoid heat. | NormanW | 17/06/2017 |
With K. Recommend easy route zigzagging to E instead of direct ascent. | Ashley | 15/04/2017 |
Straight up and down from bends on road. Folly not open. | Topographer57 | 10/04/2017 |
Tower open so climbed to top for a small donation | cjo | 26/03/2017 |
Prior to Pulverbatch Plum Pudding Plod | MichaelF | 23/12/2016 |
Second Hill of the day, walking with Sarah. Now a long trek to the Sun Inn (at Corfton with brewery attached). | Bernard | 26/11/2016 |
Great views from the top. | SarahS | 26/11/2016 |
From Strefford up through Strefford Wood and then Frizland Coppice to tower. Quick jaunt to trig for good measure. Returned same way - bit slippy after rain. | SS | 16/10/2016 |
Pity the tower wasn't open. | hillsman | 11/10/2016 |
Repeat, similar as last time except came down the direct route from tower which wasn't too bad. Some brash down near bottom but easily passed. | nordicstar | 04/10/2016 |
Easy up, then straight down. Very pretty Autumn scenes. | jenx | 04/10/2016 |
Went up the long route which starts off heading east and then cuts back. Came down the steep route which would have been fun in the wet! Folly was shut as it was late afternoon. | Herbert Anchovy | 22/09/2016 |
Walked from Secret Hills Discovery Centre, Craven Arms. Ten mile round trip to include Norton Camp on our return. Folly Tower closed today. | sooztops | 15/09/2016 |
We drove to the base of this Marilyn after our walk as I had not been up it. Unfortunately the tower was closed. ( open 11-3pm most days- see website for Flounders Folly.) The path is quite overgrown with a great variety of lovely flowers and ripe wild raspberries. A nice spot, sunny but muggy. The Trig, not at HP, is about 120m SW, in a field adjacent to the path. | Denise | 28/07/2016 |
With TJB using easy path. Very good view point. Also visited trig which is significantly lower than tower. | trimarc2 | 26/07/2016 |
'Difficult' path is extremely steep! But pops out right by the tower, nice views. Worth checking tower opening times if planning on bagging this one. | twg27 | 08/07/2016 |

4/6 After flying into Birmingham airport and the afternoon free a few bagged on a sunny but windy day. Fourth of Six (The Wrekin/Middlehope Hill/Didlebury Common/Callow Hill/Norton Camp/View Edge) | Fergalh | 25/04/2016 |
First of my Shropshire Hills, good one and a hard steady slog. There is an easy path and a hard path. I took the easy path which was hard enough, very muddy too. Loved the tower at the summit pity it wasn't open that day. Came back the same way. Thought about the hard way down but didn't want to end up on my arse. | Viroco | 10/04/2016 |
With Trefor. From west. Steep pull up slippery path. Came down footpath the goes north along ridge then descends at good angle to starting point. Interesting folly at summit. Weather good. | mike.hoult | 11/03/2016 |
open day for Flounders' Folly too
http://www.floundersfolly.org.uk/ | TeasyChris | 31/01/2016 |
In the mist from Moorwood junction. Sloshed up slippery easy route then back down steps to the south a little after the trig point. | Newton Maximus | 02/01/2016 |
Second ascent | SteveG | 18/11/2015 |
Walked up from Lower Dinchope/Westhope road to the NW. Info board shows an easy route round to the left and a hard route straight up the hill. If going straight up make sure stay on left side of hedge where easy route goes left or else it is a very hard route! NW corner of tower looks highest point but walked all round tower just in case. | mntainman | 28/10/2015 |
9th of my 10 Shropshire marilyns..nearly done! | Laura.W | 07/05/2015 |

Solo. From Craven Arms Railway Station. Along minor roads and paths past trig point that used to be Marilyn top to tower which is the present Marilyn top. Tower, called Flounders' Folly, was constructed in 1838. | pwbellarby | 23/03/2015 |
Parked in plenty of space at spot height 214m and took zig-zag path to the folly and the trig point. Returned steeply down the hill by direct descent route - not as hard as it looks. 40 minutes (3/5). | Phreerunner | 18/03/2015 |
From the campsite on the B-road, just S of Shawbank. Route and write-up: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/callow-hill-and-brown-clee-hill-again.html | Gayle | 15/01/2015 |

a seven mile round walk from Craven Arms with Tony and Neil on a dank cloudy day. | Lou | 13/12/2013 |
Parked w Jenx to NW on large lane head by Moorhead. Took easy route up in gathering dusk. Difficult route looked overgrown and fallen trees. Easy to top, trig set away under hedge direct to West. Dark by time back at car. Interesting folly top. | nordicstar | 15/11/2013 |
A short walk ideal for the evening athough timing it with flounders folly being open would be better (check the trusts web site). We did the steep direct ascent from the NW but it is becoming over grown. | mindlessflogger | 05/10/2013 |
Walked up the long route as the start of the direct route was hidden in the undergrowth. The tower renovation work was complete but unfortunately it was closed. | wombourne | 25/09/2013 |
From CP near Moorwood at 457853 – Took 'easy' route as steep 'difficult' path looked obstructed. This was pleasant, views and abundant raspberries as forestry had been cleared in places. From summit-essentially the top of Wenlock Edge- the views were excellent and included a glimpse of the industrial midlands L of Brown Clee. Back same way. | pwheeler | 30/07/2013 |
'Difficult' path overgrown and impassable - used 'easy' path | mikependergast | 21/07/2013 |
Parked at spot height 214. Used slant path via SO 465852, direct path straight up was overgrown in July. Operated for SOTA with M6PYG. It took 17 minutes to reach Flounders Folly on the summit. (foundersfolly.org.uk) | G4OBK (Phil) | 15/07/2013 |
Short walk up from the road, nice views and interesting folly. | steve_a | 06/06/2013 |
A short ascent with an interesting folly close to the summit trig. | thenomad | 20/05/2013 |
The direct route up is very steep, but go through the gate to the left before the climb starts and paths wind up quite gently. Can park in a wide area to the north without any problem | moorsman | 15/05/2013 |
Straight up the north face! | Alan Caine | 02/05/2013 |
Craven Arms - Hopesay - Burrow - Aston on Clun - Broome - View Edge - Stokesay - Norton Camp - Callow Hill - Craven Arms. Ascended by well-signed footpath from Lower Dinchope. | davidpettit84 | 13/01/2013 |
6th Eve walk. Parked at picnic point on edge of Craven Arms on the river Onny. Followed river then accross farmland to foot of hill. Really miserable wet weather. Not helped by ploughed fields. this meant walking aroound several fields. Folly on top with information board is interesting. Interestingly, the number of steps up to the top of the hill is exactly the same number as the age of the man mentioned in the information at the top. the trig point is just away from the tower on the field edge. A long wet walk - still loved by all who came. No problems navigating. | Steve W | 24/12/2012 |
Parked in layby in Setton Batch next to sign for Westhope. Walked to Hill End Farm and followed the footpath. Woodland walk very boggy with thick clay, so heavy walk. followed the zig-zag path and made it to the tower when open. Spectacular views. Direct route is overgrown and for good reason. Very steep. We later found that you can park at the bottom of the direct route near Moorwood for an easier walk. | hmt1000 | 08/09/2012 |
From layby near Culmington manor entrance, up bridleway from New house to Hill-end farm, through woods to ridge, interesting folly, shame its not open, views would be good from top. warm & too hazy for long views. | apricorum | 23/03/2012 |
