Walk w/Devon. Parked Shanklin. Shanklin Down, St Boniface Down Trig, Shanklin Chine loop. | ZacField | 06/10/2023 |
From the Ventnor Down National Trust car park, circular route across Luccombe Down, Bonchurch Down and St Boniface Down. Hot humid day, but beautiful views. Walked right round the perimeter fence. | Lazylizzie | 16/08/2023 |
Early evening wander. parked at Trig, but higher ground visible. after a wander along the security fence, I gave up. others have claimed this so until suitably chastised, so will I. | Shutterlag | 21/06/2023 |
With E. Circular walk from St Martins Road car park Wroxall via Wroxall Down, Luccombe Down, Shanklin Down and St Martins Down. Access to hp within compound not possible despite requesting permission from worker who was driving into compound as I arrived. Could not convince him only wanted to visit hp but firmly refused and advised security cameras picking up all who access compound. Could have got under another locked gate further along but in view of security, like others had to make do with full circuit of perimeter fence. Combined with a sea mist rolling across The Downs during walk meant no views at all! Win some, lose some! Visited trig points on Wroxall Down and Shanklin Down on walk. | Beeliner | 20/06/2023 |
As known, this can be done by car but we did a horseshoe from Wroxall, Wroxall Down, St. Boniface Down, Bonchurch Down Luccombe Down, Shanklin Down, Wroxall. Really good walk. | Neil Midgley | 02/06/2023 |
Walked in from Wroxall Down to the west. The compound was locked, but visited both the roadside northwest of the radar station, and the old car park, so counting this with the head-over-summit rule. | Mariana Trench | 27/05/2023 |
Drove up to Car Park. Visited Trig and High Points around perimeter fence. Good views of the Island. | Iris Jephcote | 21/05/2023 |

Cycled up Down Lane. Not for the faint hearted. | cjwilliams | 05/05/2023 |
Train, catamaran and bus to Bonchurch and then ascended the steep path. Onwards to Whitwell hill and St Catherine's hill for a lovely day in the cold wind. | Buck | 13/01/2023 |

A nice sunny day trip to the Isle of Wight. Ascended steep path from Leeson Road, Bonchurch. Views of the sea are magnificent; my favourite county top so far. The highest point is probably about 200 yards to the west of the radio station, but I did not endeavour to climb the rather tall barbed wire fence. | hillbagger91 | 01/06/2022 |
Walked up from Ventnor as part of cycle tour of the Isle | Stevooo | 14/04/2022 |
Like most had to be contented with walking along the perimeter fence, though satisfied that the point in the old carpark area is high enough to claim the hill on the head height rule. | milimana | 30/03/2022 |
Parked at the trig. Great views. | ekm | 22/02/2022 |
Parked at the trig and walked round the compound. | paulhilder | 12/02/2022 |
Shanklin > Upper Hyde > Shanklin Down > Luccombe Down Viewpoint > St. Boniface Down Trig. Point > Bonchurch Down > Nansen Hill > Devil's Chimney > The Landslip > Luccombe Village > Shanklin. | Winterfloodian | 24/01/2022 |
An unsatisfactory bag this one. As others have I walked round the perimeter and visited the “sub points” listed on here. | Crib Goch | 07/10/2021 |
Trig and Perimeter walk around the security fence. Looked easy enough to scale in places, but didn't fancy an arrest whilst on holiday. | summitter | 27/09/2021 |
Did the summit of Isle of Wight on that day by the 1m rule. Very steep walk up Devil's Chimney and walked passed the Radar Station on the way back down too Ventnor. | DavidHiner | 21/09/2021 |
Parked in Wroxall. St Martin's Down, Shanklin Down, as near as we could get to St Boniface Down, walked all the way around the compound as we couldn't get in. Then followed the landslide path to Ventnor, up through Ventnor to the Golf course, across to Stanbury Down, then the obelisk and Appuldurcombe House then back to Wroxall. 12 miles . | JulieB | 07/09/2021 |
From Wroxall via St Martin's Down and Shanklin Down. Circled the large enclosure that contains the high point. | KeithByTheC | 07/09/2021 |
A couple of workmen were on site and kindly let me go to the high point. A huge stroke of luck arriving at the time they were there. | Alan Caine | 20/07/2021 |
From Shanklin via Shanklin Down, descended to Devils Chimney, coast path to Shanklin. As noted previously no access to summit, nevertheless a great walk. | Cheshire Claret | 10/07/2021 |
From Sandown as part of Jill's 80k 4 80 years walk. | MichaelF | 10/07/2021 |
On a walk from Ryde to Ventnor | PhilipChaston | 03/07/2021 |
Took the footpath from the industrial estate in Ventnor up to and around the radar station security fence and trig point, then onto Shanklin Down trig before dropping down and heading north to Alverstone. Up onto Brading Down and across to Brading and the Yar River Trail to the (closed) NT windmill, before finishing on the beach by the Duver. Very hot day but good views all round. Solo. | richard69 | 11/06/2021 |
From Shanklin along Luccombe Down, observing many linnet, a gliding buzzard and a hovering kestrel. Got as close as poss. given area fenced off, then down via old station (now an industrial estate) and on the hunt for the Glanvile Fratillery butterfly on the undercliff, a fruitless search as it turned out on this occasion. With JSG. | JOHNS | 04/06/2021 |
Passed over summit on walk from Wroxall to the Bonchurch landslip. | BURGESS | 24/05/2021 |
Continuing my Round Britain Tour. Stage 3 - I o W, E &W Sussex, Surrey and Kent. Today cycled down from Cowes on the Red Squirrel Trail. Pushed the bike up the STEEP road to the summit. Lovely autumn weather with clear views north to the mainland. | pclyndes | 10/10/2020 |
Somewhat disappointed to visit an island and not be able to stand on highest point. Satisfied myself with walking from car par with trig pillar clockwise around entire perimeter of radar station. Highest points of note at beginning of walk with close proximity to highest point just inside first entrance gate at SZ56631 78504. Highest point within 240m contour on public land measured as 793ft and looking within compound sure head is well above highest point. So a qualified ascent as opposed to failed ascent. | mntainman | 22/09/2020 |
With Chris and Daphne - from Shanklin through the churchyard onto Shanklin down, then to the highest accessible point. The bit inside the compound is a little higher, but you can claim this one on head height. Down to Ventnor and then onto the coastal path for an excellent walk. | Richard | 11/09/2020 |
Walked up from Ventnor, to trig and then around perimeter fence. | PeterD | 06/07/2020 |
Drove up hill and parked alongside trig in corner of carpark, by fenced compound. Lovely views looking out to sea. | Hippy77 | 20/02/2020 |
On a day trip to the IoW. 1/2 Marilyns. St Boniface Down from the road summit. A walk around the compound and the summit area. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 28/10/2019 |
Drove up the steep road to the downs and parked by the trig point. Walked down the tarmac track with the complex on my right to a padlocked gate grid reference 56881 78623 this was as close as I dared get to before an act of law breaking would have been needed. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 27/10/2019 |
8.6m Circular walk from our Air BnB in Bonchurch. Along the coastal Path, up the Devils Chimney to Nansen Hill then up to the compound and around the entire outer fence. Got Chatting to two ladies near the old bunker at the summit who had purchased the land and were now converting the bunker into a holiday home which they kindley gave us a tour of and a cuppa, after that headed over to Shanklin Down, Shanklin and back on the coast path. | Jephcote83 | 30/05/2019 |
Circular walk from Ventnor via Wroxall and Appeldurcombe | jedthehumanoid | 20/05/2019 |

From upper Ventnor via clockwork buses from Yarmouth, compound open for good measure... | N.Morters | 26/04/2019 |
Walked from Ventnor Botanic Garden. Summit enclosed by high fence with barbed wire, but nearest point outside is only 2m lower, so a hand on the top of the fence counts, I think! Walked right round the whole enclosure, about 2km round. | IanHHill | 23/03/2019 |
As with most previous logs got as close to summit as possible. Number of cows guarding the gates.
A silly speculation. i wonder if any one has skateboarded down the approach road? | Anthony Vosper | 31/10/2018 |
Parked at trig. Found all the old ways in - well and truly fixed. Gate next to main compound is not quite flush with the ground though. | SS | 30/10/2018 |
Summited! Crossed no keep out signs, damaged no property, and went nowhere near anything sensitive. Doubt if Eric Pickles would have made it. | Topographer57 | 03/10/2018 |
Double bend in road judged to be the highest area outside the security fence | Moorponder | 23/09/2018 |
Visited ground near car park 550m ENE & bend in road, which intersects the 240m contour. | salen | 25/08/2018 |

Bagged on a murky day on a walk from Calbourne via Brighstone Down. Reached the highest point of the perimeter fence at dusk, turned tail and scampered back to the bus stop at the end of the footpath N of the 134m spot height on the B2337. Failed to beat the torrential rain, and boarded the bus in the guise of a drowned rat. | Gill | 19/10/2017 |
Came for the trig point, stayed for the view. | stripybadger | 10/10/2017 |

Walked along old railway trail to Winstone farm then took well signposted footpaths through donkey sanctuary up to the old gateway, onto Worsley Trail then small footpath to Obelisk along ridge to Appuldurcombe Down, summit in cloud, then followed ridge south along Stenbury Trail then east into Ventnor, followed path by road onto St Boniface Down then along to Shanklin Down trig then followed good footpaths down into Shanklin back to station, very sunny towards end of walk. | DanTrig | 23/05/2017 |

Well that's my 'Historic County Tops In A Year' completed... I visited the two 'alternate' tops and stared at the official summit 98 metres away through the outer security fence and resisted the temptation to squeeze under the gate to the West (possible for the slim and supple).

Storm Desmond was wreaking havoc up in the North - just very very windy on the top of the down. I was going to add Tennyson Down and the Needles - but the wind got stronger and I was not sure it would be entirely safe. Leave that for next year. | M3WDD | 05/12/2015 |
Wandered along the security fence. 'Old' coordinates much easier to get to. | Newton Maximus | 05/12/2015 |
Ran up and down the hill at 6:30am whilst staying in Ventnor for work. chilly blustery start to the day with great views out to sea. | Swindon Bagger | 22/09/2015 |

Got under perimeter fence and strolled around flat ground. No clear summit. | AndrewFinnimore | 02/11/2014 |
From Wheeler's Bay Road (free) car park, along the sea path, through Ventnor and onto the path at Ventnor Farm. Steep climb and then very pleasant walk along Wroxall Down. Past the trig and through the fence (there are many opportunities for this) - take your pick about the high point - human intervention or no. Carried on along Bonchurch Down, steep descent via smuggler's path back to the sea. There is a lovely little tea house at Wheeler's Bay a great place to finish. | callumorr | 12/08/2014 |
When leaving Ventor on the Wroxhall road turn right down Down Lane. Easy to miss this turn off. Car parking area adjacent. | moorsman | 06/07/2014 |

(Solo) | gerrybowes | 11/02/2014 |
County top No.46. Circular walk from holiday flat in Ventnor via Bonchurch Landslip, Nansen Hill, St Boniface Down and back to Ventnor. Fine views over Luccombe to Culver Cliffs and the mainland beyond, on a delightfully sunny and warm mid-January day coming after the all the winter storms. Temp 8 deg C. Very muddy across Bonchurch Landslip, but apart from that the path was fine. Distance 5.1 miles, time 2:22, climb 1100 feet. | alan.65to70 | 19/01/2014 |
Up Nansen Hill and around the radar station. | squeegs | 03/09/2013 |
After visiting the summit the previous day by car we walked here from Wroxall before heading down to Ventnor, the landslip and the outskirts of Shanklin before returning to Wroxall. St Boniface Down is an interesting place with plenty of military history. | G4OBK (Phil) | 14/08/2013 |

From sea level at SZ 563 772. Main compound impenetrable - fence looks recently repaired. 'Bagged' the highest lump at SZ 566 784 - 100m from the trig pillar - jut within a ruined fence. | summitsup | 04/11/2009 |
From Salisbury YH. Glorious day, great Ferry trip Soton-E Cowes. M/c to Ventnor. Thought Car Park access rd berm looked highest outside wire. Access easy thru outer fence, site deserted, so hopped over inner & walked site. Very little natural left.Grand v | martin & storm | 25/09/2009 |
Pleasant circular walk from The Landslip to E. Easy access though holes in fence & open gates to W half of compound, but E side is secure. Felt high point could be anywhere on plateau, but did my best to visit a few likely bumps. Interesting summit this | wheresthepath | 23/09/2009 |

A BIG cheat as we drove up mainly in search of the beautiful Adonis Blue and didn't realise we'd actually bagged a marilyn at the same time. We did see the Glanville Fritillary nearby though. | Skerryvore | 04/06/2009 |
Steep climb up hill when staying in Ventnor. Wandered round edge of fenced compound. | prwild | 15/03/2009 |
Mound inside looks man made. Pity trig isn't the top as all the rest has the hand of man all over it. From the car park to the W the fence is in poor condition - but then there is an inner fence with no breaches. | destaylor | 13/12/2008 |
My last English (and Welsh) Marilyn. Had finished Wales on Bardsey and loved it. This was a slight disappointment because despite the great name, the fine setting it was spoiled by the man made mess. | Martin R | 16/08/2008 |
Gates of Radar Station open - stood on mound just inside, which is clearly the high point. Views to the French coast, as well as spotting wild bluebells, a woodpecker, wild goats, wild ponies and the first swifts of spring. | denzil53 | 03/05/2008 |
High point may be behing the fence of the radar station but there is a mound behind the other fence which is about the same. | clivevilla | 27/04/2008 |

Forth HuMP of six today, wall to wall sunshine on day off from FMD Guildford. Access from Down Lane, Ventnor. Highest non man made point is outside security fence next to bend in road. Did go thro'fence but higher manmade point inside Radar Station fence | Dugswell2 | 04/10/2007 |
KCJF Not impressed with all the human junk up here but good views. Very easy to get to by car. (Bagged trigpoint too.) | crazy | 23/07/2007 |

YOU CANT REALLY GET TO THE TOP AS IT ENCLOSED BY A HIGH BARB WIRE FENCE IN A RADAR STATION | DARRENG | 20/08/2006 |
Drove to Cp over both potential tops. Walk along to Shanklin Down to Wroxall, up Wroxall Down and round S of fence above steep slops gave a worthwhile 2h. | pwheeler | 01/09/2005 |
Went in through hole in wire fence brandishing my walking pole flamboyantly just in case they thought I was a suicide bomber come to sabotage the place! | signyred | 15/08/2003 |

Birthday summit - the top of the Isle of Wight - the walk from Ventor was pleasant - but the summit fences marred the top. | chinnock | 16/02/2003 |
We parked in Ventnor for this hill - firstly westwards - to summit road. Found the trig point and the fenced area with the summit.
Decended the east side of the hill with some nice Chines. | ChinnockC | 16/02/2003 |

Parked at the Landslip car park. Dropped down to below the 150m of ascent mark by using the steps to the coastal path. Very quick ascent to top. Visited all potential bumps outside compound before striking lucky as a man came to tend the sheep so manged t | garyhoney | 04/11/2000 |

Date is first visit. Notes from later...went to highest point of fence; I reckoned [summit] was just behind the building, under one of the masts but had no means of verifying this. It's quite flat in there. A lot of the bumps around the edge are old air raid shelters, etc (cWatson 11/6/00). road adjacent | RHW | 03/06/2000 |
