6.5 mile walk from car park in Patterdale. We followed the footpath past the hotel, then ascended the main route up to St. Sunday Crag. We retraced our steps to the col then very easily climbed up along ridge to Birks. Final set of hills around Deepdale to complete the Wainwrights with Mark W who finished his second round and Mr Murphy. Set of from Bridgend eastwards to Deepdale Hall andt ascend the bracken covered slopes up to Arnison Crag retracing our steps to go on to Birks, St Sunday Crag, Cofa Pike, Fairfield, Hart Crag and finally number 214 Hartsop above How before descending back to the car. A fine hot day but cloud above 700m restricted the views. 9.5 miles and 3,800 feet | Philip A | 04/06/2018 |
It was an early start from Glenridding. I parked for £3 in the Sports field and headed up the lane, before turning left to the path up to Birks. There were still Bluebells out and the views down to Ullswater were superb as there was a thin layer of mist in the valley. It was a slog to the summit of Birks before it became easier to St Sunday Crag. Nice to have it to myself on this summit and the views were stunning. I descended to Deepdale Hause and cut around Grisedale Tarn to the steep climb to Seat Sandal. The views West were great in the soft rather misty light all the main peaks were a dark silhouette against the milky sky. I headed north and straight up the wall to the cairn at the edge of the cliffs on Dollywaggon Pike. It was then an easy walk over Nethermost Pike and on to the summit of Helvellyn where I had 5 minutes on my own. I continued along Striding Edge which was much easier than I imagined with no difficulties to the summit of High Spying How. | isabelle | 01/06/2018 |
