As others from the lay-by, up the reservoir track, through the broken fence, up the steps and circuit of the compound. Just over 1 mile, didn't take long. | JulieB | 31/12/2023 |
From the lay-by up track to reservoir. | briandavies | 18/10/2023 |
From lay-by to north up access track to reservoir, round to HP. Walked all way round top of reservoir as well. | PeterD | 17/07/2023 |
Stealth bag .. run with Pauline ... Up the reservoir access track from lay-by .. through broken fence at gate and up the steps for quick loop … nice views | milejunkie | 20/09/2022 |
From Layby. Initially Followed the BW to after the second set of marked trees then headed up to the compound. Followed the edge of the fence all the way round, (couple of gates to cross and one BWF), visiting the natural HP. The compound fence is down near the top of the access track so easy access inside the compound itself. Returned via the access track. | Jephcote83 | 17/10/2021 |
Quick nip up from the North parking in layby and using the track almost to the summit. Walked round the reservoir compound at the top to find high point. | nickywood1 | 12/09/2021 |
from 'chipping' lay by to north hop fence to res buildings | underhill | 11/06/2021 |
From the North. Rhos Ymryson. Reservoir compound on top with his fence. Curcumambulated it. Stuck in gorse on SW fencing of reservoir found an old pentagonal foil helium balloon which I removed as souvenir, to clean up the countryside. | vegibagger | 19/10/2020 |
Walked in from SW near Castell Howell where required drop could be found. Cows in field were sleepy so progress to top was unimpeded. Natural high ground is to south of compound. | garyhoney | 29/08/2020 |
From Layby to the north, 2/9 Marilyn. Quick dash up the cow filled field and onto summit structure. | N.Morters | 24/07/2020 |
Up from the layby on a horribly wet and muddy path. Gate to compound locked but wandered round and scaled the gate at the rear to get to high point. Horrible experience on very inclement weather. | NormanW | 24/02/2020 |
From layby to the north, up track. Harassed by locked mesh gates and cattle. Summit is an underground reservoir compound defended by mesh fence all the way round, got over but only just. Exit compound by NW corner and down the bridleway, no path, long grass and numerous gates. A fine viewpoint, they should encourage access. | Topographer57 | 06/09/2019 |
With: hb; We couldn't park in the layby as Highways were shifting large quantities of gravel from it. We parked near the junction to the west, then walked up the Water Authority track by edge of field. We couldn't get directly to the NE corner of the compound because cows were filling the track between the fence and an electric wire fence around a hay crop, so we hopped over the latter to the NW corner, then cicumnavigated the compound before returning from NW corner down to the bridleway back to the road. | Ian Baines | 29/07/2019 |
With: ib; We parked near the junction to W as Highways moving gravel from layby. Walked up track by edge of field, then over electric fence to NW corner, circumnavigated compond then down to bridle track & return. | Helen Baines | 28/07/2019 |
Not optimal timing today as a four vehicle farming convoy arrived in the field just before me. After a little bit of pontificating I decided to go straight up to them and enquire whether it would be ok to visit the hilltop. No probs whatsoever and it always feels best to ask :). | Alex C | 12/01/2019 |
Pretty rubbish way to spend a drizzly Christmas morning, especially as the field with access track was full of over-inquisitive cattle so had to go up parallel field edge and cross bwf when out of their sight. Walked round the compound like others but definitely the sort of hill that is never visited twice. | milimana | 25/12/2018 |
Lay-by parking at SN 459506. | Isbjorn | 12/11/2018 |
7/8 Marilyn day. A simple 20 minute walk up the reservoir access road, walked around the compound and back down the road. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 10/05/2018 |
Short walk from the layby on the B4338 to the summit reservoir gate from where I operated ham radio for SOTA. | G4OBK (Phil) | 15/04/2018 |
A bit of a daft hill really. Easy walk up the track to the reservoir, then a circumnavigation of the perimeter fence to find highest non-man-made ground. Looks easy to get in to the high ground inside the now secure fence but it is is only a bing, the footholds are not accessible for the return climb, and big brother is watching you.... | Gill | 11/01/2018 |
Walked up the track to the reservoir, bit misty for good views today. | Neolith | 28/10/2017 |
Parked at layby at bottom of waterboard track. Overcast, dry, mild, calm and good views. | iangalbraith | 07/07/2017 |
Quick bag by nipping up the track to reservoir after a couple of white vans of workmen had conveniently left the site. Went to area to east of the fenced compound as it appears to be the highest non man-made spot. | Cas-gwent | 11/05/2017 |
Massive lay by opposite gated field entrance on B4338 (SN 45949 50699) giving access to hill top reservoir. Highest point is clearly top of reservoir within locked compound but also obviously man made. Walked all round perimeter fence where looks like highest natural point is on southern boundary near SE corner of reservoir. | mntainman | 25/11/2016 |
From layby on B4338, opposite reservoir access track. Write up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/hafod-ithel-rhos-ymryson-frenni-fawr.html | Gayle | 18/09/2016 |

From layby on B4338, up reservoir track and over fence into compound. | Tony J | 24/07/2016 |
Last of 4 Ma and 2 Hu on driving/ short walks day, Rhandirmwyn inc. Crugiau Merched to Pen-crug-melyn to here, then on to Newport (Pembrokeshire). Parked in lay-by at 459507, used reservoir track. Was satisfied that a circuit of the reservoir fence gave the natural top; man made reservoir banks a bit higher. Interesting to get big views N for the first time today, from here: Arans and Arenigs most evident. On the drive over to Synod Inn a view of the Lleyn Peninsula and Bardsey Island opened up. | pwheeler | 27/04/2016 |
After the snow of Hafod Ithel the drive down to Rhos Ymryson was sunny with blue skies. Pulling into the sizeable layby at yhe foot of the resv track I put the jacket on out of habit. By the tine I arrived at the compound I was in the middle of a hail storm. Ok West Wales.. not funny now!
Trudged around the inside of the compound cursing my luck. | stig_nest | 09/04/2016 |
Parked in lay-by 458507 followed footpath, wellies essential as it was flooded. Followed reservoir track down which could have done in trainers which come out opposite lay-by. | CodyleCoyote | 17/02/2016 |
Car parking almost opposite entrance to reservoir track | jimbloomer | 17/01/2016 |
1/4 Quick walk up to reservoir Nice views. | Fergalh | 09/08/2015 |
With Jenx from layby opp track. Used this to gain compound. No one around, work finished. Easy climb over gate as required but high point looks at SE corner of fenced area near gorse bushes. | nordicstar | 03/04/2015 |
Parked at 459507 for a short walk to the covered reservoir. We were watched from the huts on the site but let them guess what we were up to. Access on the S.E. corner to the high point. A small gate was open out of sight from the workers. A very uninspiring top. GB agrees. | bolton | 05/03/2015 |
Parked in layby to N. (SN45953 50700) – Up farm track, over a small fence & made way to SE corner of compound – Over another small fence & through unlocked rear gate to enter the compound and locate the summit. (PM) | gerrybowes | 05/03/2015 |
With Trefor. Footpath from road then across fields to top. Contractors working on reservoir but gate unlocked. Got on top of the reservoir before we were challenged and told we were not allowed on site. Agreed to depart as we had by then achieved our objective. Back along access track. | mike.hoult | 03/12/2014 |
Good roadside parking on B4338. Up access track to large covered reservoir, looks like it's had a major overhaul recently - all except the poor security fencing. | jonglew | 06/09/2014 |
Up from the road on way from Aber to Cardiff. Driven near this way thousands of times on the way to my grandparents. Shows what hill-bagging gets you up to! | huwthomas | 30/06/2013 |
lots of workmen all round reservoir - got as close as I could | gigglejon | 18/12/2012 |
Dagnes | Glenford | 26/08/2012 |
Up waterboard track. There were open books on the desk in the building so I was happy not to be shooed away. | clivevilla | 15/11/2011 |
Up through the field. Encountered friendly farmer on return turning ewes into three week's grazing before lambing. | Eddie | 24/02/2011 |
Up waterboard track - reservoir compound padlocked | G4OWG | 30/09/2010 |
15-min walk up track to reservoir. Lots of buzzards and kites on fine morning.Summit was flat roof of reservoir. | dbb | 17/06/2010 |

Parked in lay-by to north on B4338 and took footpath, then thro' gate on to hillside. Handy damaged area of fence to allow access to reservoir. The reservoir roof would take the whole Welsh and Irish rugby teams at same time. | Dugswell2 | 21/03/2009 |
I liked this one though it was an easy stroll up the track to the resevoir. Nobody at home in the hut today. | Father Ted | 26/08/2008 |
From N pleasant evening stroll. | destaylor | 14/08/2008 |
Track from N leads to large covered reservoir, flat on top of course. | Aye Jimmy | 22/07/2008 |
