3 & 4/5. Parked at the Sirhowy Valley Country Park and had a direct thrash upwards along the boundary of mature conifer trees to the first level forestry track. Hard work and after that followed the track and Cambrian Way to the Mynydd Machen trig. Descended on the Cambrian Way and road to Glenside and across the footbridge to the Newtown industrial estate and under the A467. The plan was then to follow the zigzag tracks up through the woods to Mynydd y Lan, but finished up on a more direct mountain bike track for the lower half of the hill before rejoining the forestry track to the top wood boundary. Thereafter a short walk across to the boundary stone hp. Returned via the forestry track to the A467 subway and along the road to the Country Park in the dusk. Good views from both tops. From ST 1946 9335. Very misty - no views.summitsup12/11/2023
Parked by church. Short road walk then up track to masts. Track through tussocks to summit. With Jill.Dangerous Dave06/11/2023
Walked up from wattsville via the road climbing to the west of Mynydd y Lan. A nice easy walk on an overcast day. Spent quite a while by the masts looking for the elusive Bronze Age round barrow, which turned out to be closer to the masts than I expected. Then headed off along a narrow sheep track to the summit. From the summit I headed off southeast, steeply downhill until I hit the unmarked forestry track heading east to the road west of Crosskeys.thesweetcheat04/03/2023
Uptrack from the NW via mast which look disused. Then to boundary stone which has a buried block adjacent.cjo26/06/2022
Parked at entrance to logging road in South Blackvein Industrial Estate. Walk up track fo 1km then left and long slog up zig zag of track to finally reach forest near top, empty red bull cans everywhere, across into rough field, found marker stone, not sure if I reached the top, back down same wayTribal2er22/04/2022
With KeithByTheC. My 100th Welsh Marilyn. A pleasant 12 mile circuit of Mynydd Y Lan and Mynydd Machen from Cwmcarn.JulieB24/03/2022
From Cwmcarn, up good path from e thru woods. At highest point of track faint path to radio masts. Then tussocky ground sw to quad bike track near edge of woods on e side of plateau. Descended nnw to steep valley and good RoW s through forest. KeithByTheC24/03/2022
Murky views but weather conditions not too bad really for this time of year. Pleasant enough walk, and certainly nice and peaceful up here.Alex C08/03/2022
Back up again on 4/1/2022 with Pauline - run from Sirhowy Car Park on glorious sunny daymilejunkie04/01/2022
Parked by church to W. Same route as Winterfloodian below.paulhilder05/12/2021
My penultimate Welsh Marilyn.luckily grass on flat summit area very dry today. Mapped track only just possible to follow. HP at boundary stone by ditches. Ascended from Mynydd Machen, via valley. Not all mapped path exist but we found excellent if steep descent MTB path from summitDenise 28/11/2021
Sirhowy Valley Country Park - Mynydd y Lan - Cwmcarn - Cefn Rhyswg - Mynydd Twyn-glas - Twmbarlwm - Mynydd Machen - Sirhowy Valley. There are zigzagging paths up the hill but I chose poorly and ended up bashing through bracken.davidpettit8420/11/2021
From church via masts. Narrow path from western side of mast compound leads through dense vegetation to the summit.Winterfloodian29/08/2021
Run up through Silent Valley and down through quarry.TedCymru07/04/2021
As other parked at church to west. Strong wind and intermittent rain so walked down road to pick up mast track. Over grassy moorland to summit boundary stone having passed 2 others. 3/6 Marilyn despite storm FrancisN.Morters25/08/2020
Parked at start of mast track, 1 space on grass at entrance. Quite a pleasant view from masts and from the top.iangalbraith18/08/2020

Sunday evening walk out from the west, through deep grass and bracken, mercifully dry.vegibagger21/07/2019
Evening walk from Crosskeys rugby club, up mostly zig-zagging bike paths, found stone marker fairly easily.penbet17/06/2019
Parked in Crosskeys rugby club, nice walk up but watch out for motorbikes.Stevooo26/05/2019

From NW starting at church. Road S, track E to masts, narrow path SE through long grass to small stone beside the summit.Topographer5702/10/2018
Took a while to find the marker stone. GmacT leading.elizyanne14/07/2018
3/3 Parked by Mynyddislwyn Church and, like others, took track to the three masts from where an obvious trod leads all the way to the boundary stone. A pleasant walk in the late afternoon sunshine. Met a fellow bagger and had a good chat.milimana17/05/2018
From Wattsville, north up the track through the woodland then the clearfell, and then east out onto the southern slopes of the mountain, up an ill-defined path then followed the fence line east and then north across the moor to the boundary stone. On this last leg, I fell into several concealed mini-grykes (or whatever they are called in Wales) but escaped injury-free. Watch out!Mariana Trench14/05/2018
3/3 Marilyn day. From the mountain road, up the the track to the masts and then across the moor to the summit boundary stone. Aw wet evening walk! A round trip of 4.5km in 1 hour. (S)silveracorn_alan11/05/2018
Finished driving up road from Wattsville to Mynyddislwyn- much felling in valley. So started from track to masts, then followed path all the way to summit. Not exciting, easy, but good views, especially halfway from masts to HP where view down into forested valley and beyond.pwheeler20/04/2018
Parked at start of track to masts, then wet path to join quad bike track to summit. Northern HP (381 on 1:25K map) looks just as high as southern one, (385 on 1:50K map).Minto10/04/2018
A good circular walk over Mynydd Machen and Mynydd y Lan from Crosskeys station in rain and mist. Crossed the road bridge over the Afon Ebwy E of the college, then took the FP signposted Mynydd Machen below Glenside, and followed my nose upwards through the mist. After Mynydd Machen, took the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway walk, then zig-zagged down to the footbridge below Wattsville. Up the FP towards Hafod Tudor, then onto the forestry track towards Mynydd y Lan. At the highest point, look for a good path following the top of the forestry, crossing a valley containing trail bike tracks, then following the forest fence NE up the hill, steep but easy, to meet a fence heading SE. A good path along the fence, hop over it where it turns E, and wander up to the summit. Head E to the forest fence, where you'll see a path heading down Craig y Pandy towards Crosskeys in long zig zags.Gill20/01/2018

From Wattsville. Started up road signposted to Hafod Tudor Cottage. But turned off right and used forest tracks to zigzag uphill until I found a path that took me as far as the top of the trees where the gradient eases. Returned by descending gully below masts (unpleasant) to pick up path marked as ROW on map. After a bit this was a bit obliterated by forestry working. Resumed zigzagging down forest tracks.lenman28/12/2017
3/8M parked track entrance to masts track then atv track to near top.robertphillips09/11/2017
From church.ngthack02/10/2017
Parked at Church. With TJB. Took track to masts and then followed overgrown but usable path South East almost to top. Final part was following sheep tracks.trimarc227/07/2017
Parked at church in Mynyddislwyn. Followed track behind rifle range to radio masts then across to summit.liljonb22/01/2017
Parked at the church in Mynyddislwyn. There is space for a couple of cars here. We took the track to the radio masts. There are a couple of gates, but none were locked. There is a rough track from the radio masts across the common which doesn't show on the map. The boundary stone next to the summit is just visible through the long grass to the right. With Sara and baby Ross.islamidget20/09/2016
Fifth Marilyn of the afternoon and the one that told my legs enough is enough for the day. Parked at track by pt 308m to WNW gate padlocked. Track across the open access varies between good and sketchy. The area of the summit is long rough grass though and is tough going. The area south towards the forestry looks higher but when you get there not so much! Returned via 3 masts decent track all the way from there. Huge solar farm.stig_nest15/09/2016
Parked by Church, back along road to track up to Masts and then followed track across hillside before heading through long grass to stone and HP. Good views and reasonably dry ground.PeterD28/08/2016
With: hb; Walked up from Crosskeys through the wood taking the now disused path rather than the bulldozed track. This path is still in a good state apart from a few fallen trees. Used GPS to locate summit.Ian Baines26/08/2016

parked by church to west. road up from wattsville very narrow!!!!dicky29/05/2016
To masts then direct route. Spotted 4 boundary stones along top.Dusty13/03/2016
Up to masts past solar farm then easy path/track across to top-much less boggy than expected even after all recent rainMark Sims11/02/2016
Up valley path from Wattsville, looping round to the right on track above plantation to flat summit area. Return was down through woods towards Crosskeys on nasty indistinct bramble covered path. In hindsight it would have been better to follow the tracks than the route of the right of way.Cas-gwent08/12/2015
