3 & 4/5. Parked at the Sirhowy Valley Country Park and had a direct thrash upwards along the boundary of mature conifer trees to the first level forestry track. Hard work and after that followed the track and Cambrian Way to the Mynydd Machen trig. Descended on the Cambrian Way and road to Glenside and across the footbridge to the Newtown industrial estate and under the A467. The plan was then to follow the zigzag tracks up through the woods to Mynydd y Lan, but finished up on a more direct mountain bike track for the lower half of the hill before rejoining the forestry track to the top wood boundary. Thereafter a short walk across to the boundary stone hp. Returned via the forestry track to the A467 subway and along the road to the Country Park in the dusk. Good views from both tops. Space for 1 or 2 cars at 216907, up concrete track, follow all the way up to towers and trig, excellent views, continue down steep muddy track down to old quarry, through quarry and join up to path, took a right across a field/big trees and through the beautiful raven walk back to road and up to startTribal2er13/03/2022
Back up this way for the new bing Tump to the west so it was good to nip up here once again and at at least get to see the view in the daytime.Twice Shy08/03/2022
The final hill on a sunny solo walk from Wyllie, via the many Bronze Age cairns on Mynydd Bach, Twyn Cae-Hugh and Twyn yr Oerfel (with the tops of Mynydd y Grug and Pen-rhiw Tip). The large Bronze Age summit barrow is very fine, despite the damage. Unfortunately the visit was marred by a couple of idiots in a 4x4 who thought parking on top of the barrow was a bit of a laugh. From the top I took the steep path east to descend, headed SE to Twyn Pant-teg, then down to Pontymister to get the bus.thesweetcheat30/01/2022

Parked at Sirhow Valley Country Park. Scrambled straight up the steep slope to reach the unpaved road. Discovered a path on the way down - it starts opposite the public toilets then take the first left. There are also places to park higher up, for example above the farm buildings at ST 216 908, just below the wooden Machen Common sign.paulhilder05/12/2021
Free parking in Sirhow Country Park in valley to E. Mapped paths which are steep direct ascents don't exist so did a long traversing loop, approaching summit from East. HP on grassy tumulus next to trig. Aerial enclosure nearby lower. Good urban and sea views on sunny dayDenise 28/11/2021

Took a detour on the way home from a camping trip in Glamorgan to take in this Marilyn. Parked on layby just in front of access barrier to the mast road and took a leisurely walk to the top. Amazing views on summit! Spotted a few Stonechats on the way back down.Gerry the Ranger27/07/2018
From ST 216907. Parking for a couple or cars. Followed the vehicle track to mast and summit trig. was pasted by several vehicles driving up all the way. Ho Hum. Last Marilyn of Section 32 for elizyanne and myselfGmacT16/07/2018
Easy walk up. Practically a car park at the top! Sat on bench and watched the jets go by. Also watched helicopters drop water on the nearby hill. Trees on fire and had been for days.elizyanne16/07/2018
2/3 A steep pull up through the woods from Sirhowy Valley Country Park and then easy tracks. Great views from the top. Tried varying the descent but the path N of Gelli-ffiniog farm is not signed and doesn't seem to exist once the wood is reached. Final descent by the signed ROW a little to the W, i.e. the way we came up.milimana17/05/2018
2/3 Marilyn day. The ascent of Mynydd Machen (362) along the ridge from the mountain road. A round trip of 5km in 1h10m. (S)silveracorn_alan11/05/2018
Bagged as part of a long run from Cardiff to Risca. Coming up from Machen village, but the clear-felling presented a real challenge to get up and over.kasharic11/03/2018
From the Rhymney river in Machen village, up the footpath through the woodland behind the church, then diagonally northeast up through the clear-fell, then through another wood, and out onto the scrubby slopes on the east side of the mountain, then west up the Ridgeway path to the trig point at the summit.Mariana Trench04/02/2018
