From parking at Rough Castles. All summit area bumps visited.Alan Caine22/03/2024
Bike from main Thrunton Woods Park via tracks and then Coe Crags. Woods now partially re-opened, but bridge still shut, but easy to cross and a lot of people using it / accessing hill and MTB tracks from this direction - ignoring 'Danger of Death signs'. Used unmarked MTB tracks to W of marked track to climb - a little bit of windblow to negotiate first couple hundred metres. Nice sunny Autumn day.davechaffey03/10/2023
There is only one parking space at Callaly (at the start of the public footpath) and that was taken so I used the following excellent route. Just room to squeeze a car in at the ungated field entrance SW of Callaly (NU 0485 0909). Head up the field edge to the access land. Cross the metal gate and turn right, following the fence. When the fence turns right, head south to the SE corner of the plantation in front of you. You will soon see an obvious track heading up the hill that, incredibly, is not marked on the map. This brings you out on the path from Cairn 271. Decent hill that feels wilder and more adventurous than I expected.Wycombe Wanderer14/05/2023
Woods still closed from Eastern approach.PeteF30/04/2023
Woods closed, much felling and log extraction. No activity today as main roads almost impassible due to snow and ice. Great wee walk from Rough Castles all the way to the summit(s).iangalbraith16/01/2023
From Callaly. No parking in village so parked north of village in informal layby. Walked into village and then followed paths to Hard Nab and onto Long Crag. Return same route. About two hours.Longwojo06/09/2022
Having read previous entries and seeing on-line Thrunton Forestry was closed, headed to north-west approach. Carpark by cottages in Callely has new private sign, so parked roadside half mile north. Thought it would be ok to bag Castle Hill and Calley crag on way, big mistake lots of trees down and paths obliterated. Eventually made it through to Hard Nab and on good path to Long crag. Returned via rather overgrown row to Callely and back along road. Path up onto ridge of long crag rather trashed by mountain bikers.Flatfield14/07/2022
Followed IanHHills advice and avoided the forest routes. Good parking area beside a row of cottages in Callaly. Looks private but I asked a resident and he was very helpful and directed me to the gate at the far end of the car park. Lots of paths over the hills, mostly muddy after recent wet weather. Nice walk though.govanah08/12/2021
The forest routes were blocked by fallen trees, so I drove round to Callaly and walked from there, up to the forest edge and along to the W end of Long Crag's ridge. A very pleasant route, excepting the frequent showers, cold wind and paths like streams.IanHHill01/12/2021
From Thrunton Wood car park - recommend the long walk via Thrunton Crag, Hard Nab then along the ridge and back to the car park.twg2724/11/2021
A lovely walk through the woods on good tracks from Thrunton Forest car park. Footbridge and then track up to Coe Crags (308m) with its prominent cairn. Moorland track to Long Crag. Back same way. There are quicker and easier routes but a nice walk. Solo.Dangerous Dave16/11/2021
Started and ended at the Thrunton Forest England carpark, which was packed with mountain bikers by 10am. Forestry tracks to the Coe Burn then over a footbridge and up a narrow muddy path to Coe Crag and on to Long Crag. Continued on the main track westwards then back down to the Coe Valley and up the footpath to Hard Nab and its wonderful wind shelter, passing a herd of wild ponies half-way along. Callaly Crag next amongst a twitter of finches then across Thrunton Crag to the beech-topped Castle Hill. Forestry track East and NE-wards below Thrunton Crag to near its exit, taking a red-marked path just before a car lay-by back to the main car park. 3.45hrs.summitter07/11/2021
3 of 3. After Shillhope Law we drove to Rough Castles. Same route as Gill. With Karen.ChrisR11/10/2021

Approached from East (parked just south of Rough Castles). Easy route in along forest track then took track through trees up to ridge then along to top. Touched trig and stood on various other points too. Nice warm day and sunny. <90 mins round trip walk whilst passing through on way home after a client visit. Solo.assynt_bob01/06/2021
through Thrunton Wood from Car Park NE cornerjef24/05/2021
Parked in car park on minor road at Thrumton Woods. Met a guy who warned me about the large number of Adders around the area at present time, so put dog back on his lead. The path is excellent on the forestry track for first mile. It’s a little muddy further up as we enter the wooded area. At no point is the route too steep and it’s pleasant walking along the ridge before reaching the trig point on Long Crag. It’s a blue sky day and lots of others out enjoying the sunny conditions. It’s 4.7miles in a leisurely 1hr and 50mins.JamesJones05/03/2021
Easy parking on the verge 200m S of Rough Castles. Forest road then track to the N edge of the forrest at NU071069. Clear, wide path W through the heather to the trig point. Excellent views.JohnR21/10/2020
From the track near Rough Castles. Followed by Coe Crags. Very good views for little effort.squeegs29/08/2020
Rebagged - also added Cartington hill in the remote west area.Jhimmy12/01/2020
Minor road off A697. We park near Rough Castles. A Red Squirrel welcomes us. Track through forestry then a footpath (where hundreds of silvery spiders webs dew laid glint in the sun) takes us up to Coe Crags where the edge falls away. Summit and trig now visible in the distance. Extensive views south towards Tosson Hill and North to the Cheviots and Ros Castle. The early sun and blue has given way to glowery grey skies. Rain forecast later. Greatdisplay of fungi in the woodsbriandavies30/09/2019
From car park, followed a map from Hillwalkers App. Weather wasn’t the best on ascent but clouds lifted at the summit to reveal lovely views. Got lost on the way down. Map writer must have got bored at the end of his/her description! Counted this 7.5 mile walk as a very nice exercise build up for some higher summits this autumn.SueVinny12/09/2019

As per MOYDH. Decent views on a clear day.willyross10/10/2018

Parked opposite forest track entrance from road just south of Rough Castles. Up via first right hand fork in track shown on OS map which is a path not a track. Returned via second fork.raffemeister15/09/2018
From woods north of Callaly, via Castle Hill fort and crag in beautiful pine woods. Sunny and windy, coldish. Picked ceps. Rounsfell24/08/2018
Parked up for lunch on way to Wooler and discovered we were parked exactly at start point into the woods for this hill. Well, it would be rude not to! Up through the woods then under the electric cables, fork right on the track. Where track looks to turn left beside woodland higher up, care taken to go into the woods on a lesser path (this is out on the open hill folks). Tuck in to woods and the path takes you almost up to the summit. Came back over Coe Crags and worked back down into the forest to pick up outward route by the pylons. Made a nice 2 hour walk.nickywood102/08/2018
4/5 Marilyn day. The ascent of Long Crag from Rough Castles. Followed the forestry roads, then along the moorland track at the top of the ridge. A round trip of 8km in 1h50m. (S)silveracorn_alan29/05/2018
A lovely day for a stroll up from the track that starts south of Rough Castles. The first path right (a fair way after the pylons) is a nice narrow footpath, and not the vehicle track imagined by the OS. Out on the moor, the main path leads inexorably to the top and wonderful views.Gill05/10/2017
From pull in at Thrunton Woods just down from the mast. Straightforward no navigational issues. A super viewpoint watching squalls on distant hills. Large section of forestry has been clear felled which looks worse than the trees. 2/4 today on drive up from Stafford.stig_nest12/09/2017
From E through Thrunton Woods (P by mast) - was following a naked rambler for a while.ger21/08/2017
From Thrunton woods Layby to the east. Easy walk on track then path.N.Morters18/08/2017
Turn north-west off the A697 just north of Wandysteads (signposted Thrunton Woods). After half a mile or so there is a small pull-in opposite a gated entrance into the woods (alt 202m). Good walk along a decent forest track, eventually turning north to the open access moor. From here a track leads west right to the summit. 7km return, 90 minutes 131m ascent.moorsman02/08/2017
Parked at rough castles 091 072, followed forest track then path to top.Cas-gwent19/07/2017
Went the long way to Long Crag. Trudged along the red path (worst walking trails ever) until I eventually spied a small gate in a wall - red trail pointed onwards but checked the map and the gate was the right way. This led to Castle Hill. Checked my compass at the top and headed down to McCartney's Cave. From there headed up to the two cairns and then across moorland to a stone cairn with some good views. Crossed the moor to the foot of Long Crag passing a small herd of wild ponies. Climbed the steep path and there was a little bit of low grade scrambling needed over a couple of rocks. Weather turned nasty at the top of the hill so chose to head south on a forest path that led to a forestry road that took me to the public road. Then a long trudge back to the car park along the road. Would've been better to have missed out the red path trail and took a more direct route to Long Crag... then do the cave and castle hill another day. Being February, I had to keep up a quick pace in case NorthernWayfarer21/02/2017

From minor road to E, with Mrs G in inclement weather. Good forest road then track. On to Carrington Hill for an 8 mile circular walk.jonglew12/10/2016
Solo. Rather than a dash by the quickest route, I started at the Thrunton Woods car park at NU085096 and made a circular walk. Started with easy walking on broad tracks through forest and then W on path beside Coe Burn. Path is well trodden and continues up western slopes of Long Crag. Continued on path over point 308m and down to footbridge at NU079075. Fine, warm and dry day.pwbellarby18/08/2016
with my family. Parked near Rough Castle and walked in on forestry road using a path up a parallel firebreak earlier than the usual track to reach close to Coe's Crag and so avoiding meeting the foresters. Easy walk to summit for SOTA activation and return via same firebreak.M0YDH16/08/2016
From Coeburn, follow trail runners markers up and down.rhalstead26/03/2016

From end of forest road as others. Just followed track all the way and ignored the felling signs (why do they not say they don't work on Sundays). Wind picking up but missed the rain.SS07/02/2016
