From Grassy parking area near the Furnishers, (SO 39457 63593). Good Tracks to near summit area then a few small tracks to summit with fallen tree, easy access this time of year. Touched Highest point of soil on tree root just incase. | Jephcote83 | 06/01/2024 |

From Byton and through the gate at the back of the church then up on the farm track before picking up the Mortimer trail higher up. The actual summit is given as a mound by an oak. Due to the 6 foot tall bracken and blackberry thorns this was difficult to find particularly as the said oak has fallen down. I spent a while thrashing around from tree to tree until the said summit was found. Quite unpleasant. | Peterb | 02/09/2023 |
Parked in Byton outside farm distribution centre - workman happily gave agreement as long as there was enough space for the large lorries to turn in/out of the yard. Two large signs outside the church say the parking there is for church patrons only. Followed the Mortimer Way up the hill. Hp is just off the track at the top, although said trees as summit feature seem to have blown down. Interesting clock on the church. With Gillian. | richard69 | 11/08/2023 |
3/3 Marilyns . Hegdon Hill, Burton Hill and Shobdon Hill. | Longwojo | 11/06/2023 |
From Belgates farm path. Difficult to leave fields due to nature of stiles, may have gone wrong. | davechaffey | 28/05/2023 |
Parked close to the Furnishers, road gate locked, pedestrian gate open. Easy wee walk, bit of a thrash at last minute. | iangalbraith | 30/11/2022 |
Whilst walking the Mortimer Trail | nickywood1 | 11/07/2022 |
From good parking at The Furnishers. Summit near track and not too much of a bash. | Alan Caine | 12/06/2022 |
From Uphampton, good parking at The Furnishers. Take ROW through field or go through derelict FC Field Station. Half way up intermidable long forest road, go left and up good path from SO 3854 6392, which comes out on ridge track 200 m E of summit. Warning- going down this path, the apparent continuation down becomes overgrown and you have to go through brambles to a good path just inside the woods. | henryfm | 24/04/2022 |
A quick walk on a very pleasant Spring day. Bus dropped me at Mortimer's Cross, lane to Covenhope Farm then up the forestry track along the spine of the hill. The summit trees have been bashed about in the storms. Views are restricted, but lovely woods. Dropped down to Shobdon via the Arches (well worth a stop at). | thesweetcheat | 25/03/2022 |
Parked at Byton church & then followed the Mortimer Trail to the top. The oak trees mentioned in the 'summit feature' description have all fallen, victim to a storm in early 2022. Visited trig too - electric fence was on - 'luckily' it was me who discovered this! | DanMaisieBex | 29/01/2022 |
Bike ride from Leominster: Wapley Hill, Shobdon Hill and Mere Hill. | Mark Jackson | 11/09/2021 |
From Byton - as has been mentioned the road from the N is closed (no bridge). Path overgrown in places, so I decided to try a lower path through the wood on the descent. This turned out to be a bad idea. | paulhilder | 24/08/2021 |
A serious woodland hike. Not suitable for wee people! | Play2End | 23/08/2021 |
Parked in Byton at the back of the barn (near the church) and walked up. Note that the church car park is patrons only. Also you must approach Byton from the south due to a road closure, a bridge is being replaced so could be some time. Paths towards the summit barely passable - serious hiking kit needed. If possible walk across the fields instead... | jamiequackers | 18/07/2021 |
from Byton church path nearly grown over | underhill | 02/07/2021 |
Revisit whilst passing through the area, and it was more convenient to go right over the top of this hill rather than following the roads around it. | Twice Shy | 14/05/2021 |
Parking beside barn at Covenhope SO407642 (though could probably drive 200m up to huge forest track junction for parking where main FC forest name sign is). Along Mortimer Trail and ridge line - summit area is being harvested - extraction vehicle has been driven right over the top. | Isbjorn | 14/04/2021 |
Via public FP from Uphampton and then forestry tracks, top quite overgrown with bracken/brambles. | steve_a | 23/08/2020 |
From church. Path overgrown. Across field and across to main top where a little baggers path cut through the trees. Found trig on the way back down | ketzster | 22/06/2020 |
With Wapley, loop from hill fort car park. Very hot, but some light showers. Badly stung by nettles on footpaths, wearing shorts. Very slow progress as clearing nettles with stick etc. | Rounsfell | 15/06/2020 |
Walked from Wapley Hill, via Byton. from top, descended to Uphampton, where K picked me up. | IanHHill | 18/03/2020 |
Walked from Wapley Hill along the Mortimer Trail. This route is NOT recommended. Overgrown unmaintained National Route! Awful. Brambles and nettles along the whole route. Disgraceful really for an area that is trying to encourage walking tourism! Solo. Visited trig too. | Dangerous Dave | 16/09/2019 |
Mortimer Trail from Wapley Hill overgrown with bracken nettles and brambles | TeasyChris | 13/09/2019 |
Walked up from FC station. | Wheeler | 22/07/2019 |
With Chris and Ian. From the South. | gettingonabit | 29/05/2019 |
From Byton, up past the church then onto path. You don't need to cross the field, esp. if thick and wet grass as the road/track goes round to side. Up through the trees then a tricky narrow path traverse along steeply sided slope. Potential to have plenty nettles later in summer. Joined track to high point the short excursion into the vegetation for summit. Trig seen but not visited over the grass field, Lower field is cultivated. | N.Morters | 03/05/2019 |
P outside works in Byton - walked along Mortimer Trail - quite pleasant apart from noise from works. | ger | 16/04/2019 |
From Byton, parking at farm. Track clear to follow but not great with some sliding down the hillside involved. Tried and failed to find a alternative path back further down the wooded hillside. | squeegs | 17/02/2019 |
By Mortimer Trail from Wapley Hill | prwild | 17/02/2019 |
From the church you can pick up the Mortimer Way by heading up the lane. Follow the sign to Ludlow. Not overgrown in mid December. High point didn't seem to be far off the track. | Herbert Anchovy | 19/12/2018 |
Easy parking in Byton by enormous farm - can see why Mortimer trail would be overgrown in summer-just slippy today and ended up on my knees on sloping path across face of hill | Mark Sims | 05/11/2018 |
2/6 Marilyn day. Walked up the forest tracks from near the Furnishers Plantation compound. Found HP in the woods and brambles just off the Mortimer Trail forest road. A round trip 4km in 1 hour. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 08/08/2018 |
Parked in the roadside church car park in Byton (alt 161m), assumed that there would be no services at 6am on a Wednesday morning. Very easy walk along the Mortimer trail until level with the summit. In summer the final 26m are a challenge through bracken, gorse and brambles. 4.4km return 80 minutes. | moorsman | 08/08/2018 |
Walked from Wapley Hill through Byton village. Lovely views to the west towards Wales. Summit not obvious, in amongst the bluebells and trees a few yards from the main track. 191m ascent | RoguePulsar | 11/05/2018 |
2/11M parked near the furnishers good tracks to the top. | robertphillips | 20/10/2017 |
From Byton Church. I visited the church so that I could count as a patron and use the car park. The Mortimer way is, indeed, overgrown, but fortunately the vegetables were dying off and it wasn't too bad. Dying vegetables were also useful for accessing the summit. I walked back more easily along the field headland, hopped a barbed wire fence and then rejoined the path. | Gill | 12/10/2017 |
From Byton on the Mortimer Trail. Early evening sunshine. Path rather overgrown in places. | Winterfloodian | 05/10/2017 |
With K. Did it an apparently easier way to most commenters. Parked at junction near 'the furnishers' to south where there is lots of space. Took footpath following field boundary around forestry commission research station. Then went directly up the hill on permissive path, which is initially metalled. No access problems, either human or natural. | Ashley | 11/09/2017 |
Parked in farm at Byton and up by church. This approach is quite appalling in summer with the Mortimer Trail being heavily overgrown and on the descent I lost it completely and thrashed through briar and 7 foot high bracken. Best avoid this ! | NormanW | 17/06/2017 |
From Byton. Contrary to earlier posts there are now two clearly visible Patrons Only notices in the church CP. Nearest safe parking I could find was at 368643. Mortimer Way markers are less visible and there is a diversion over a dangerous stile at the top of steep steps. And a notice claiming the Explorer Map route is not a footpath or bridleway. Evidently they expect horses to go up the steps. There are several new developments in the village, interesting.. | Topographer57 | 09/04/2017 |
5 of 5 Marilyns from Kington | SteveG | 24/03/2017 |
Walk up from Byton via trig point and back on Mortimer trail. Trail was quite muddy and eroded clinging to the side of the slope! | twg27 | 14/02/2017 |
With TJB from Byton Church (Church is worth a visit). Path traverses scarp slope. Enjoyable. | trimarc2 | 23/01/2017 |
From Byton church taking Mortimer Trail. GPS needed for summit and found trig in hedge on descent. | SS | 02/01/2017 |
Enjoyed it so much the first time bought Mrs D and jake for them to enjoy the easy stroll up. Found trig this time and nipped over to touch it. Sad. Company: Mrs D and Jake the Black Lab. | iandesbottes | 19/10/2016 |
Parked near Uphampton Farm then pleasant walk to summit. Circled around and back to car. Nice view to next marilyn Wapley. Company: Solo | iandesbottes | 13/10/2016 |
From Byton Church. Overgrown path on the way up and found a better more direct route down through the pasture above the church. Met Mike and Lucky Dog. | jenx | 05/10/2016 |
