Glasgwm, Aran Fawddwy, Drysgol & Pen yr Allt uchaf. | Yr Eryr Aur | 22/10/2023 |
This was a lovely walk. Climbing the western Arans from Cwm Cywarch gives a lovely approach. I climbed Gwaun y Llwyni, Waun Camddwr, Aran Fawddwy (a good view today, so I climbed it again), Gwaun Lydan and Pen yr Allt Uchaf. All finished off with a very steep drop on the northern grassy slope of Pen yr Allt Uchaf. | oldbagger27 | 20/06/2023 |
First summit of the day, parked up in the free car park in cwm cywarch, nice easy going hike until you turn right at the stlye 1.5 miles in, tough going up the grassy hill with the summit on the top | Buckleymon | 09/02/2023 |
Steep ascent up the side of Hengwm with dad and bro. | cumbria mammoth | 28/10/2022 |
Up the steep south ridge going NW towards Glascwm in clokwise cicuit | vegibagger | 11/06/2022 |

From Gwaun Lydan. Boggy walking in the mist, a tracked vehicle has made even more of a mess of the bog of Waun Goch. Descended north west to path. Met a couple of chaps who'd summited Aran Fawddwy and there had not been a cloud inversion so decision vindicated. 15km 5 hours. | Wycombe Wanderer | 22/01/2022 |
A windy day with the odd snow flurry but pleasant enough. Via track running along NW flank and then straight up fence from the stile to fence corner on ridge then short if windy walk to top. | dickscroop | 04/01/2022 |
Nuttall walk 8.1.Pen yr allt Uchaf. Gwaun Lydan. Aran Fawddwy. Erw y Ddafad-ddu. Aran Benllyn. Gwaun y Llwyni and finally Waun Camddwr. With Hiking Manchester. Glorious weather and great company. | Lazylizzie | 24/07/2021 |

From SW, revisit for the 616m top, which is on John Gillham's list and possibly also a Nuttall | RHW | 11/06/2021 |
Nuttall's routes 8.1 and 8.3 combined plus a few extras - Pen-aran (at the end of the main ridge - a Bridge), Pen y Byn-fforchog North Top (a Bridge) and Y Gribin (a simm). 12 peaks - 29.93km - 5500 feet - took just under eleven hours (the GPS reckoned three hours were spent sitting on my backside!). Lovely sunny day until I got to Pen y Byn fforchog when the cloud descended and it began drizzling. Route through the forest was horrible. | Herbert Anchovy | 31/07/2020 |
From national Park car park SH880298 (further up valley than my edition of Nuttall book suggests), on via Gwaun Lydan, Drysgol, Gwaun Y Llwyni, Waun Camddwr, Glasgwm and Pen Y Bryn Fforchog. A great horseshoe round the edge of the Cwm rather than following Nuttall route in order to 'save' Arran Fawddwy as my last 2,000 footer the following day. | Neil Midgley | 30/07/2020 |
From Cwm Cywarch car park. Circuit of Y Gribin, Glasgwm, Waun Camddwr, Gwaun y Llwyni, Aran Fawddwy, Geaun Lydan and Pen y Allt Uchaf. Direct descent off NW of Pen y Allt Uchaf. | welshyboyo | 17/07/2020 |
1/7. As per Nuttall book. Pen yr allt Uchaf. Gwaun Lydan. Aran Fawddwy. Erw y Ddafad-ddu. Aran Benllyn. Gwaun y Llwyni and finally Waun Camddwr the ex Nuttall. Great walk loved waterfalls on descent. Misty but mild. | nickywood1 | 25/09/2019 |
A 18 mile walk with 5500ft of accent combining the Arran Ridge and Southern Arrans following nuttalls route.Pen y Allt Uchaf, Gwaun Lydan, Aran Fawddwy, Wrw y Ddafad-ddu, Aran Benllyn, Gwaun y Llwyni, Waun camddwr, Glasgwm and Pen y Bryn-fforchog.The woodland beneath the last top has been completely felled and so the return route Nuttall suggests is really difficult. From the free car park at the end of the minor road in Cwm Cywarch three miles north of Dinas Mawddwy. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 29/06/2019 |
After a long climb up from Ty'n y Maes. First hill on a circular walk from the car park at the end of Cwm Cywarch ( not marked on our OS map - portaloos! ). | DanMaisieBex | 22/06/2019 |
From Gwaun Lydan over Waun Goch (see log for 2112) and continued on ridge to summit, descended very steep flank to path and returned over footbridge to Blaen Cywarch car park. | Dewi Prysor | 16/08/2018 |

Up from Cwm Cywarch to Glasgwm, heading on to Aran Ridge to take in Gwaun y Llyni, Aran Fawddwy, Erw Ddafad-Ddu and Aran Benllyn, east to Foel Hafod Fynnydd, due south to Pen yr Allt Uchaf. | andrew.morel | 17/02/2018 |
Nuttall route 8.1 and added Glasgwym at end on 8 hour walk. Agree with Aristotle about steepness of route up. | Mark Sims | 29/05/2017 |
as per the nuttal book walk 8.1 the path up is a steep bugger. faint paths up top and a bit boggy early doors. ridge path is good | Aristotle Chip | 07/10/2016 |
Nuttall Walk WN 8.1 The Aran Ridge from Cwm Cywarch. Visiting Pen y Allt Uchaf, Gwaun Lydan, Aran Fawddwy, Erw y Ddafad-ddu, Aran Benllyn, Gwaun y Llwyni and Waun Camddwr. 19km with 1200m ascent in 7 hours. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 05/10/2016 |
With G. Nuttalls' route from Cywarch > Pen yr Allt Uchaf > Gwaun Lydan > Drysgol > Drws Bach > Aran Fawddwy > Erw y Ddafad-ddu > Aran Benllyn > Gwaun y LLwyni > Waun Camddwr > Cywarch | RT1970 | 16/08/2016 |
Final top, diversion at the end of a round of Cym Cywarch, fine outing. Steep down hillside to regain path and track to the Park CP near the head of the lane. | nordicstar | 12/07/2016 |
ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY WITH GOOD VIEWS. FOLLOWED NUTTALLS WALK 8.1 UP THE STEEP GRASS ONTO PEN Y ALLT UCHAF, THEN EASILY OVER GWAUN LYDAN. A STIFF CLIMB ONTO ARAN FAWDDWY, THEN EASY RIDGE WALKING TO ERW Y DDAFAD DDU AND ARAN BENLLYN WITH GOOD VIEWS OVER BALA, RHINOGS AND ARENIGS. RETURNED AVOIDING SUMMITS TO DESCEND STEEPLY AND THEN OVER ROUGH GROUND TO GWAUN Y LLWYNI AND EASILY TO WAUN CAMDDWR. DECIDED TO TAG ON WALK 8.3 TO AVOID RE-ASCENT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FINE WEATHER AND LONG JUNE DAYLIGHT. A VERY HARD CLIMB ONTO GLASGWM, THEN EASY RIDGE TO FINISH ON PEN Y BRYN FFORCHOG. HOWEVER, THE FOREST HAS BEEN FELLED AND IT WAS VERY TOUGH GOING TRYING TO FOLLOW THE PREVIOUS RIDES UNTIL THE EASY DESCENT OF THE ZIGZAG - 10.5 HOURS WALKING. | BURGESS | 15/06/2015 |
Followed Nuttalls route plus Pen-Aran. | rhalstead | 24/05/2015 |
With Frank and Steve on a seriously wet day! Quite a pull up from the valley! | Lou | 25/01/2015 |
A reduced Aran Ridge walk with Lindsay and Steve taking in Pen yr Allt Uchaf, Gwaun Lydon, Gwaun y Llwyni, and Waun Camddwr. A rare wet foot day the rain was so bad. | knarf | 25/01/2015 |
Up from car park at end of Cwm Cywarch, up the Aran Fawddwy path, over the fence and across country to Gwaun Lydan, across country to Pen yr Allt Uchaf and then down the path south of Nant Terwyn. All the way down, difficult to believe that the NE top is the highest, but it is! | tsharp | 18/01/2015 |

On own. Starting from Cwm Cywarch, southernmost four tops on Nuttalls walk 8.1. Then added walk 8.3. A long hard walk, but really enjoyable in dry sunny conditions. | Crib Goch | 21/04/2014 |
Lovely sunny day | Ruth | 18/04/2014 |
Nuttalls walk. Supposed to be sunny but spent a lot of time in the mist. Worth it for the occasions when the mist cleared. | johnjennison | 03/09/2013 |
Circuit from Cywarch,6 tops in total. | Emlyno | 16/08/2013 |
First time I've had to abort a walk because of the heat! And in Wales too!! Had hoped to do the full Nuttall walk taking in the ridge. But with no shade, no breeze and no phone signal, after dragging myself up Pen Yr Allt Uchaf, I decided to just take in one more (Gwaun Lydan), and retreat down Hengwm to a welcome drink at Dinas Mawddwy. The ridge awaits another visit. | ruthatlast | 12/07/2013 |
Cloudy day saw me follow an anti-clockwise loop. Skipping Aran Fawddwy in the end as the wind was up and I couldn't see anything. Four more bagged so six to go. | SS | 04/05/2013 |
All very boggy from Bwlch y Groes until valley encountered, super views of Aran Ridge | geoffreybbb | 08/01/2013 |
