Parked by the derelict pub in New Radnor. Walked to Harley Dingle then over footbridge. Pleasant walk up by Firing Range boundary fence then good tracks all the way to the trig pillar. With Jill.Dangerous Dave07/02/2024
Room for a car or two at the road end to the north 156 655. Followed the farm track until the obvious grass ride West of the summit. A bit tussocky after crossing the fence but easy enough. I thought the approach was better than the flattish summit plateau, though the elevated trig was impressive. I passed the farmer on my return and he didn't have any issue with where I'd parked.Peterb10/08/2023
Parked in the car park by the school in New Radnor, as it was the school holidays. Knowle Hill, Whimble, Bache Hill, Black Mixen, Great Rhos, Nyth-grug, Mynd and The Smatcher. Warm but overcast with a breeze on top. With Gillianrichard6907/08/2023

11.5 miles 2203ft walk ,start at New Radnor School carpark. Whimble, Bache Hill, Black Mixen and Great Rhos.stephenbuda25/06/2023
Clockwise circuit up by Harley's Dingle and again risking all by following track to the top. Sarah's first Nuttall of the 2023 Challenge.Rob Rees31/01/2023
Followed Nuttall walk 11.4 with R. Perfectly clear morning.Dan Baddeley19/11/2022
Upper car park (400m start!) - Whimble - Bache Hill - Great Mixen - Great Rhos - returned past Black Mixen and down Ystol Bach Brook.Mark Jackson27/10/2022

Round of the valley, going tortoise paced by this point due to a seized up back. Descended on track beyond boudary fence to a right turn which joins bridal way at top of Davy Morgans Dingle (which is more interesting than the direct south descent).Nick Canute02/09/2022
From New Radnor following bridleway then the danger area border fence until S of summit. Horrible initially in calm humid conditions and constantly pestered by flys for 2 hours. Better on the summit with a slight breeze. Great spot though. SoloRoguePulsar15/08/2022

09:30, -1 in New Radnor (7 later) cloudless, windless. Haine's Mill route: Great Rhos, Black Mixen, Great Cregiau, Bache Hill, Whimble and Knowle Hill. Brecon Beacons floating above the haze, mostly easy terrain, nice woodland on descent. Superb!Wycombe Wanderer17/01/2022
Parked in forestry car park, visit to the waterfall then up the forestry track to gate to open fell at SO 177 625. Followed decent path to range boundary fence and then followed that around.sebastiencale09/11/2021
A very pleasant clockwise circuit of Great Rhos, Black Mixen and Bache Hill from New Radnor.Up Lane from Haine's Mill, round the three tops to finish down th Lane into the Centre of New Radnor. Good all th way except for a short stretch of dep heather from the gate at the end of the track before great Rhos. Path down through the woods near the end rather overgrown at this time of year but not a problem.dickscroop23/09/2021
Through New Radnor churchyard, then followed the path round the contour line. Up the track on the West side of the valley. The western bit of the range is a pain in the proverbial. Once I did work my way to the trig point and could see a well worn route back directly through the range it all became much simpler on the way back. Return the same way. Not another person on the hill.pclyndes12/09/2021
New Radnor > Jack's Green Farm > Whimble > Bache Hill > Black Vixen > Cross Dyke > Great Rhos > Harley Gorse > New Radnor.Winterfloodian07/09/2021
From the waterfall up the better condition track straight up (east of wood). Lots of wild blueberries on the west track down.Stevooo01/08/2021
Great day with Stevie n Tay and Yeltzbagger. Horseshoe including Black Mixen.ketzster26/07/2021
Parked at the forestry carpark at the end of Mutton Dingle and climbed Whimble, Bache Hill, Great Creigiau, Black Mixen and Great Rhos, before coming back around the top of the valley over Black Mixen again. Gorgeous, clear blue skies but this mountain's very flat-topped so not the best for views.SootAndShale25/04/2021
Solo en-route to Brecon Beacons. Parked at highest point and foolishly tried shortcuts both up and down. Could be interesting area for longer treks.lordtonult30/08/2020
run from New Radnor including Bache Hill and Black Mixen. With Dr Tim.dave_mole06/08/2020
7/8 A splendid round trip of the Great Rhos to bag 3 Deweys. From New Radnor up bridleway, with quick hop over the fence (SO 214 619) and up the field to Knowle Hill, back down and up FP through wood to barns, then direct up to the Whimble (splendid summit), back down and revisited Bache Hill and the transmitter at Black Mixen, visiting the deleted Nuttall, Great Creigau, en route. Then a significant descent to bag my second Dewey, Fron-wen (disappointing - just a rise in a forest road) and on to revisit Marilyn Great Rhos, before a long trek over wild moors to my final Dewey, Nyth-grug, and a lengthy road walk back to New Radnor. All in all a great walk with good views. 25km with 900m ascent in 7 hours. (S)silveracorn_alan24/07/2020
Parked at Car Park for Water-break-its-neck waterfall. Visited Falls with K, then together for about a mile up through forest before going solo to summit. plenty of snow on heather made plateau hard going. View 100m.IanHHill19/03/2020
From Graig, limited parking just beyond the 4x4 experience centre. Up the tracks into woods, which continue most of the way to 600m and a path through the heather to trig. 1/2 Marilyn, onto Beacon Hill afternoon.N.Morters08/02/2020
Completed this, with difficulty due to the low cloud and very short visibility!!EricMoore07/12/2019
Climbed up Davy Morgan's Dingle from Water-Breaks-Its-Neck. Followed old track from south, marked as access land on my map but large new signs warn of potential dismemberment, explosions etc. Ignore and Enjoy!Rob Rees03/12/2019
From Graig, on a mixture of farm roads, forestry roads, bridleways and a path to the summit. In clag, so no views.NormanW04/10/2019
From the north starting at public road end near Graig. Followed bridleway tracks up to 650m then slightly left onto path to summit. Perfect morning.Topographer5708/09/2019

Parked at New Radnor and walked 17.5km taking in Bache Hill, Black Mixen and Great Rhos. Sunny day with some cloud. With eldest son.clyoung21/06/2019
From New Radnor passing to the west of the firing range. Just up and back as we had no time for the circuit including Black Mixen and Bache Hill. The trig is surrounded by heather but, coming from the south as we did, after passing over a gate at the end of the track close to the top, there is a track to the left. Follow this until it appears to be going away from the trig, carry on a few feet and there is a path of sorts straight to the top.Newton Maximus24/05/2019
Easter Saturday in glorious, cloudless weather. Started from Llandegley, walked up the road to Vronlase and then up the track along the north of Foel. Apart from the friendly farmer at Vronlase, didn't see a soul. The top was quite dry and a major contrast to the my previous visit in zero visibility. From here visited the Bronze Age cairns to the WNW and NW, then on round to Black Mixen.thesweetcheat20/04/2019
Parked in New Radnor, followed route clockwise around Danger Zone to take in Great Rhos, Black Mixen and Bache Hill. Blustery and clear.andrew.morel15/04/2019

Parked in New Radnor village and used ROWs and bridleway up the left side of the range. returned same route with elizyanneGmacT18/07/2018
Lovely walk from the village, around the hill and then up the valley. Look down onto munitions area. Open ground at the top and fortunately found narrow track to the trig point. It rained for all of 20 seconds!elizyanne18/07/2018
From Water... car park. Into trees, first right and straight on at first sharp bend left. Out of forest and up access road along east side of forest. Dry, smooth grass all the way. Hot and sunny.iangalbraith15/07/2018
With K from Water-Break-Its-Neck carpark. Struggled to get into Davy Morgan's Dingle from the main Walton Plantation track. The danger area has been expanded as of 2017 making it hard to access summit (but possible trudging over trackless moor). Decided to return through top of Warren Plantation via Esgairnantau and Crynfynydd, however south end of these tracks are not as depicted on 1:25k map (they are correct on the non-OS map on here when you zoom in past the 1:50k on the normal view). Ended up confused in Cwm Du but put the pieces together and exited via Warren House. Didn't have fun!Ashley12/07/2018
Part of a Bache Hill, Black Mixen, and Great Rhos circular.RyParks25/03/2018
On own. From Dolau railway station via Llanfihangel Ruydithon. SE track past Cross Dyke to summit. Return via forest track S of The Riggles, then along cleared forest edge. A lot of tree clearance has taken place. Beautiful autumn day. No-one else out.Beeliner30/10/2017

Parked up in the village and walked up Whimble first, then Bach Hill, Black Mixen and Great Rhos. Down into Harley Dingle then footpaths back to the village. Mainly following the Nuttall walk.Neolith28/08/2017
Two and a half hour, six and a half mile county top walk from New Radnor I had no problems as it was a clear afternoon but would not want to be up there in poor viability. Second visit to this top whilst ticking of the 2000ft summit's, third of three tops following the nine mile Nuttall route from street parking in New Radnor, first visiting Bache hill and Black Mixen.WAYNE ROWLETT21/08/2017
Knowle Hill - Whimble - Bache Hill - Great Creigiau - Black Mixen - Great Rhos. Basically the Nuttalls route with occasional diversions to take in the three bonus summits. Mainly cloudy and breezy but dry. Fairly dry surface with paths through the heather - judging by some other comments I was fairly lucky.Herbert Anchovy29/07/2017
With Shaky & Smithy from New Radnor. Parked in the village & took the steep minor road NW up to the forest at the top, following the track & then a very overgrown path to E of Whimble rejoining the track. Followed the fence N & then climbed over the gate to follow the fencelines to the tumulus on Bache Hill. Returned to path & then slanted NW along the edge of Black Mixen detouring to take in the summit. A fine walk round head of the valley to Great Rhos on dryish ground & then followed track at edge of danger area all the way down to Harley Dingle & round side of the hill back to New Radnor. A couple showers but great views & a great walk out.NotReallyABagger23/07/2017
Asked what I wanted for Father's Day and the answer was...the trig on Great Rhos. Failed this twice in 2015, and it didn't look good this time either with the heat, but a nice breeze higher up kept us going, and we finally bagged it. Like previous comments found the paths higher up were little more than sheep-trails through bog, my son went knee deep into mud at one point, and it was a real struggle to reach the trig even though the ground isn't that steep up there. Water-Break-It's-Neck was never more welcome at the end, the kids loved splashing in the cold water, and the Harp Inn at Old Radnor provided similar relief for the adults. Glad we did it, but probably wont be doing it again.Stuzinho17/06/2017
We parked at the car park for Water-Break-Its-Neck waterfall and headed up through the forestry and back down via Davy Jones' dingle. This was not a great route. The forestry tracks have significantly changed and we struggled to find a way out of the forest. Eventually, at the highest point of the track, we followed a very wet firebreak to an old gate, SO177625, and escaped. The RoWs on the hill have all but disappeared and are very difficult to follow. We followed a faint track to what used to be a gate, SO178633, (doesn't open, but easier to climb than the barbed wire sections). There was no obvious path, so struggled through tussocks and hidden ditches (and luckily through a gap in the next fence) to the summit. We did find a track heading south away from the summit, but that came to an end somewhere on the side of the dingle and we improvised thereafter until we reached the fields and the forestry which did have predictable paths this time. With Keith and baby Ross.islamidget13/06/2017
