From Swinhope Head. Fendrith Hill and Chapelfell Top on one side of road followed by Westernhope Moor on the other side. Enjoyed Chewing the cud with a couple of fellow baggers near the peak of Fendrith. | Longwojo | 18/06/2022 |
Today was day 6 and my final day of a long backpack. Fendrith Hill was my first summit as I had camped close by on Westernhope Moor. An easy approach to the summit. | morgs4mountains | 26/03/2022 |

Solo walk from Swinhope Head. After a period of dry weather the conditions underfoot were virtually dry. Over Dora's Seat to Fendrith Hill (small cairn is higher than trig point) then onto Chapelfell Top (visited both cairns and pole) back over Swinhope Head to Westernhope Moor (knoll and trig point). Back to Swinhope Head. | Glenelg | 23/04/2021 |
With NB Langdon Beck to St Johns Chapel road up hill dodging peat hags to summit Chapelfell Top then along sort of track to Fendrith Hill. Return via down to quarry to car. | Frank | 13/04/2021 |
With FR from Langdon Beck to St Johns Chapel road up hill dodging peat hags to summit Chapelfell Top then along sort of track to Fendrith Hill. Return easier than ascent via down to quarry to car. | Bheinn | 13/04/2021 |
Trig point and pile of stone both on top.
Walked from road along fence line over dora’s seat.
Very wet and boggy | 2510chris | 10/03/2021 |
Used quarry road from NW. Continues to line of grouse butts up grassy line through hags. From there round the hill to reach the top avoids worst of hags. This was our return route! Much better than the way we went up. With B and R. | jenx | 12/11/2020 |
P at Green Lord's Seat - Fendrith Hill - Dora's Seat - dropped N into valley to Swinhope Burn @ 460m then ascent to Chapelfell Top (both summits & S Top) - back to P via Quarry (SE End). | ger | 04/11/2020 |
Started from Swinhopehead House but made the mistake of taking the marked route which led to the ski club house - an ascent up the grassy piste meant we ended up doing Fendrith Hill before Chapelfell Top which wasn't our original intention. Misty all the way so no views. | milimana | 08/09/2020 |

From Swinehope Head en route to Chapelfell Top. | Peter_W_Mitchell | 07/08/2020 |
Walked up lane from Westgate to bridge over Swinhope Burn then followed Nuttalls route 10:4. | dgresty | 24/07/2020 |
Boggy loop to Westernhope Moor Trig, Black Hill Trig (North of ridge at 559m, not recognised on this site) and Fendrith Hill. Spotted by gamekeeper who had seen me watching an owl and thought I was either a bird surveyor or someone destroying traps (which are apparently on surveillance now). He was satisfied after a chat that I was just visiting the trigs. | meltdiceburg | 16/07/2020 |
After Chapelfell Top, see Chapelfell top for route details | JulieB | 25/06/2020 |
From Chapelfell Top. Peat was dry because of drought and made for easy walking. Headed to Three Pikes afterwards. | NorthernWayfarer | 29/05/2020 |
After a snack in the car at Swinhope Head. 1 hour. | Wycombe Wanderer | 18/01/2020 |

Round of Fendrith Hill and Chapelfell Top from Harthope Head | RobB | 09/12/2019 |
With Sue from 86089 34786 on Langdon Beck to St Johns Chapel road along quarry track for 100m and up hill dodging peat hags to summit Chapelfell Top then along sort of track to Fendrith Hill. Return easier than ascent via down to quarry to car. | Frank | 28/09/2019 |
With Wendy A. Trig pillar too S6501 | vegibagger | 15/09/2019 |
From cattle grid due E, after doing hills on W side of road. Dora's Seat -> Fendrith Hill -> Chapel Fell S Top -> Chapelfell Top, then retraced steps back to car. Rough ground, mainly peat hags, from Fendrith to Chapelfell; cut the corner on the return hags bigger so prob didn't save much time. | jonglew | 02/09/2019 |
From Chapelfell Top via John Nuttall’s alternative summit. The boundary ditch made a pleasant alternative to peat bogs for some of the way. The descent to the quarry was helped by a developing ATV track to the old quarry and dramatic views as the cloud lifted and merely loured. | Nick Down1 | 23/08/2019 |
From cattle grid to the east. Up to Fendrith Hill then across to Chapel Fell through peat hags and bog. A gully/ditch running east of the fence made for an easier return to Fendrith Hill. | mart0797 | 08/08/2019 |
Nuttalls route via Chapelfell Top. Good views from the summit, Teesdale was under a cloud inversion | Gary Heath | 29/06/2019 |

walked from Swinhope Head GR NY 89839 33173 a layby at the cattle grid

heading over to Fendrith Hill passing the top of the sky lifts one a good day you can see this quite boggy and lots of peat hags about summit is a fe meters from the OS trig the headding over the hags to get to the summit of Chapelfell top 2 summits hear and unsure which was the true one to can carry on down the ridge and then head for the road i opted to go down the side of the fell as no visibility could soon see the farm and the road thinking that looks tough trust me the road is miles easier than the walk itself back to the parking spot to refill with water and off over to Westernhope moor this is the boggiest part of the walk stick to the fence and walls unlike me | Darren-443 | 18/05/2019 |
en route from Chapelfell Top to Westernhope Moor, as per Nuttalls. with SCM. | IanHHill | 02/11/2018 |

After Three Pikes via Noon Hill, Harthope Head and Chapelfell Top. Tough in parts. Back via Harthope Bank avoiding worst of quagmire. Great day. Staying in Golden Lion in St John's Chapel which I recommend | trimarc2 | 21/02/2018 |
snowy | Pete Pozman | 15/02/2018 |
Richard M's b'day weekend. Langdon Beck past the caves, track up to Church Bowers then rough terrain to Fendrith Hill. Along boundary fence to Chapelfell Top then return to Fendrith, along fence past Weardale Ski Club Tows (a couple of skiers out!) to Dora's Seat then descent to Scar End, Hanging Shaw, Hodge Hall. Frozen bogs except for a few places! | zoob | 05/02/2018 |
From Harthope Head | Slash3 | 30/09/2017 |
Parked up at cattle grid to E. Ran over the rough, boggy ground following the fence / wall until hit the trigpoint just as visibility reduced to 50m and then headed for Chapelfell Top via a tortuous route before crossing the fence and following the drainage channel. Turned round and headed back to the car at which point visibility down to 50m for the whole route. | madaddo | 22/09/2017 |

2nd top solo walk tough conditions underfoot snow and boggy | colinfielding | 21/03/2017 |
Snow fell yesterday giving a soft covering above 500m. Ascended from Harthope Head following the line of the fence. A drainage channel lead from the final corner of the fence north to the top. Snow hid the bog so I sank more than in previous days when I could see where to avoid.
The trench takes you all the way to Fendrith Hill with good views south. Turned east following the fence past the ski tow and over Dora's Seat then down to the road crossing at Swinhope Head where I stopped behind a wall for lunch sheltering from the wind. Sun at times felt quite warm!
I followed the fence gently uphill then cut the corner following buggy tracks at the 630m contour. The topic Westernhope Moor was very wet. I was tempted by the wooden track built for the buggies but it was very slippery and sunken into the water in the worst spots, so I went back to bog jumping. On the return I followed the line of the fence all the way which was Ok. Once back on the road I walked back to Daddry shield takin | axe.stephen | 24/02/2017 |
Walked on my own from St. John's Chapel. Warm but thick mist all day. This summit is easy to find from Chapel Fell Top with the help of a wide gully and a fence that leads all the way to the trig point. No view today. | flockwatcher | 14/09/2016 |
Out doing a few trigs from Swinhope Head. A bit up and down to this one. | Walker Dan | 10/08/2016 |
