From Hartside Pass summit: Black Fell, Tom Smith's Stone Top and Grey Nag. Descended into Slaggyford and caught a taxi back to the car. Claggy, grey cold day.Lazylizzie30/09/2023

Nuttall walk 9.8, with R. Really enjoyed the walk down along Gilderdale Burn.Dan Baddeley03/06/2023
From Renwick straight up Thack Moor then ridge then fence over Watch Hill but then messed up cut across and nearly reached Black Fell through the crap! Followed fence on west to Tom Smiths Stone then to Gray Nag. Came back on east side 15 minutes faster - take note. On to Black Hill then Hartside and down bridleway and back road to car.SS17/04/2023
From Slaggyford then along the hunting track to the end. Up past the Grouse Butts to the ridge with a walk alongside the wall to the trig and cairn. Quite windy and cold but dry. Returned by the same route. Track blocked on the way back as a bulldozer had got stuck in between a narrow gate. Lots of wildlife again including plenty of Hares. Time taken 2 hours 35 minutes for 7.5 miles and 1437 feet of ascent.isabelle11/04/2023
A hot sunny day but just enough breeze to keep it comfortable. From junction at Black Hill to The Dodd. No real path but easy going. Parked at674493 on A689. Not ideal, half on road, half on verge but nowhere better. With hindsight I would have been better going through gate there and straight up onto the ridge but I opted to head north to the track but then immediately left it on an ATV. No problems and on return came straight down to gate opposite cardickscroop11/07/2022
From Hartside Cross Pass to Black Fell via Hartside Height, along ridge to Grey Nag via Tom Smith's Stone. Return to Tom Smith, and across Croglin Water to Graystone Edge, Watch Hill and Thack Moor. Return to Hartside Cross via Black Fell.raymooremanx11/06/2022
Afternoon walk after fiends fell and Melmerby Fell in the morning. Black Fell , Tom Smith's Stone Top and Grey Nag. Heavens opened ten minutes after I set off so aborted the idea of including Thack Moor.Longwojo20/05/2022

Climbed Black Fell, Tom Smith's, Grey Nag & Thack Moor from Hartside Summit on a clear but chilly day. Very wet underfoot, but easy walking otherwise. About 22km, with only 330m of ascent.oldbagger2722/11/2021
Gilderdale horseshoe from Gilderdale bridge layby - Grey Nag, Tom Smith's Stone Top, Blackfell, Hartside Height, Benty Hill and Scarberry Hill. Overcast, blowy day. With Gillian and Grahamrichard6913/11/2021

From A689 to NE. Room to park on verge near Kirkhaugh Cottage then track and rough grassland > Little Heaplaw. Then followed fences via Black Hill > Grey Nag. No paths but not too bad if you keep close to the fences.JohnR03/09/2021
From Hartside Pass, Black Fell, Tom Smith’s Stone, Grey Nag, Tom Smith’s Stone, Watch Hill, Thack Moor, Watch Hill, Black Fell, Hartside Pass. Not as bad as it could have been. Good path to Black Fell, then deteriorates through lurid green bogs and self-levelling lakes of black peat, until routes coalesce just S of Tom Smith’s Stone around the perimeter of a super massive green hole MEB, from which water does not escape even at the end of Summer. Otherwise, ATV tracks alongside many fences/walls, especially on W arm of the ‘Y’. Stiles over walls at Watch Hill. A handy ATV track crosses Croglin Water at the point where the valley suddenly narrows (about NY643456). High P – nice weather? – pah! Cold wind, low cloud and mizzle, drizzle, rain, all day - it’s a Bank Holiday!Isbjorn30/08/2021

Solo out and back from Whitley Castle Roman fort. Over Black Hill to Grey Nag then on to Tom Smith's Stone Top. Mainly over pathless moors with deep heather, tufted grass and lots of bogs. Useful gates at approx 6904048316, 6859048096 and 6833348096 then over two fences and a wall.Glenelg03/06/2021

From Tom Smith's Stone Top. Sun coming out, relatively easy walking, nice. Lay down in the sheep fold out of the wind to eat my sandwiches. As the wind battered the wall and wisps of cloud scudded overhead, I tried to imagine living in a non-maritime climate. Stopped dreaming and faced the wind - on to Benty Hill via Hartside Height.Wycombe Wanderer20/01/2020

From U-bend in A686 to south. Good track to the mine, then across the rubbish. Black Fell and Tom Smith's Stone first. Lots of peat hags to negotiate.jonglew15/01/2019

13.3 mile circular from Castle Nook farm. Walked along Pennine Way south towards Alston then followed walled track onto the moors, climbed over easy walls onto Park Fell Summit and trig then left summit enclosure under barbed wire in broken wall, followed pathless but fairly easy ridge onto Benty Hill (all fence crossings are easy not barbed after Park Fell), then ascended Hartside Height onto Black Fell, followed broad ridge to Tom Smiths Stone Top Nuttall then Grey Nag, the numerous bogs on the way are still fairly dry at the minute. From Grey Nag descended east pathless at first then ATV track to Little Heaplaw, and descended steeply down to road, along road back to start. High Cloud/sunny, unsurprisingly saw no one all day.DanTrig04/08/2018

From ample parking near telephone box by A689 at Castle Nook (NY 69577 49046). Grey Nag > Grey Nag N Top > Tom Smith's Stone Top > Tom Smith's Stone. Back same way avoiding repeat ascent of Grey Nag by skirting the summit to the south. Fairly easy terrain with no peat hags!David Gradwell28/04/2017
My second time up Grey Nag from Slaggyford on my way to bag Tom Smith's Stone Top (missed it last time because of adverse weather). Glorious day this time.NorthernWayfarer23/04/2017
Walked on my own from Gilderdale Bridge. A fine spring day with plenty of sunshine.flockwatcher05/03/2017
Black Fell, Tom Smith's Stone Top and Grey Nag from Hartside Cafe in strong winds. Mostly pathless except quad bike marks but fairly easy going except for peat hags between Black Fell and Tom Smiths Stone Top which could be quite bad in wet weather.clivevilla07/08/2016
Start point Slaggyford. Followed track to hunting lodge then the grouse butts up to the fence and then followed the fence/wall to the summit. Looks like you could have problems during Grouse shooting season but other than the 60mph winds... no problems.NorthernWayfarer07/08/2016
Nuttall Walk EN 9.8 Grey Nag & Black Fell from Gilderdale Bridge, visiting Grey Nag, Tom Smith’s Stone Top, Watch Hill, Thack Moor, Black Fell and Benty Hill. 28km with 780m ascent in 7h 40m. (S)silveracorn_alan05/08/2016
I took the Pennine Way from the A689 as it passed through woodland, over a stream and through a muddy field to skirt round a Roman fort, where I left the Pennine Way and passed through a gate onto open moorland. The path disappeared, and above 1,500 feet I was walking through snow. Route finding would have been impossible had the day not been clear; as it was, progress was slow, aiming for fences until I finally reached the summit. Here there was a network of walls and I had to explore them all before finding one with a gap sufficient to let me through to the trig point. I more or less followed my own footprints downhill until the snow stopped, and had to wade through mud again before reaching the sanctuary of the woodland.peter4lc11/02/2016
