Three pikes and great stony hill from rough rigg.robertphillips09/09/2023
With daughter, Kate. Parked at NY81963437. Walked down the road and took the path that goes up to Coldberry; it's a bit indistinct. At a sheepfold went eastwards to a gate we could see in the fence. From the gate went to the OS 651m spot height cairn and on to the summit. Back same way. Dry so no problem with bogs.pwbellarby11/08/2023
2 of 3: From Great Stony Hill. Peat hags no problem in the dry weather. Then direct back to Rough Rigg. With Karen.ChrisR20/04/2023
From Burnhope reservoir, Nuttall walk 10.1: Three Pikes (hideous boggy mess),Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat Trig and true summit, and Dead Stones. Good walking weather, cool with good visibility. This is a really tough walk due to the terrain (peat hags, heather & bog) and long sections with no paths.Lazylizzie25/08/2022
We wanted to bag this notorious hill! I think we chose the best time of year and easiest way possible. We parked on B road by the stream west of summit. We went through gate for ROW then easily crossed Trough Sike and followed fenceline to where the shafts are marked on the map. We then just made a b-line for the cairn marked on the map near the summit. This way there was only a few boggy ditches to step over and a short bit of easy pathless walking up to summit. We returned the same way. Not the most interesting hill, but not that bad with nice wilderness views in all directions. I don't understand why it has the name Three Pikes though! 154m ascent. Earlier that day we bagged Meldon Hill.DanTrig01/08/2022
Four tops in three short walks. Viewing Hill a mixture of the good track and easy if pathless ground. Supposedly on the bridle path from south of Rough Rigg but after the gate this does not seem to exist on the ground so ad libbed across to great Stony Hill and across to Three Pikes which does now have a small neat cairn. Then the short walk to Middlehope along the county boundary, this too now has a nice tall new cairn.dickscroop08/07/2022
1/5 of 10.1, just over 4 hours elapsed time for 14+ milesDavidGMould24/06/2022
From Burnhope reservoir,Three Pikes,Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones. 5.5 hours, overcast but no mist.Longwojo13/06/2022
What a tough hill!! I approached from Chapelfell Top. The walk to the mountain road was tough over the peat hags but once I reached the mountain road, the rest of the walk west was easy until the last half mile to the actual summit. A tough approach and I met a fellow peak bagger at the summit!morgs4mountains26/03/2022
With mizzi. Then across to Great Stoney Hill2510chris05/11/2021
From burnhope reservoir up the causeway track then across to burnhope west and down via high watch currick. Mostly an uninspiring bit trot would hate to be here when the ground is sodden as it was mostly dry and I still had to avoid bogs.emily18/09/2021
Parked at entry to track for Grass Hill Farm then ran up the track until I encountered a gate, at which point I followed the unmapped fence to the left, up to the trig at the summit. Back down to the gate and kept straight on to head for Three Pikes before descending to the road at Rough Rigg and running back up the road.madaddo02/09/2021
Parking at Rough Rigg. N along B6277 until green lane to Coldberry End. Easy path from gate to top of Great Stony Hill. Returned to gate, then hags en route to Three Pikes can be avoided on their S side until they have to be tackled to reach a fence corner which provides a mustering point and from which a path handrails one into a MEB at the low pint of 610 metres (MEB=Man Eating Bog). From the cairn at 650 metres, recovering burnt heather patches can be linked up to join a line of shooting butts and a service ‘path’ back to Rough Rigg, crossing the beck late to join the PF and use the gate.Isbjorn28/08/2021

I couldn't see one pike, let alone three. Three Swamps would be a more appropriate name. 10:30, 9 degrees, overcast, light westerlies. From track to NW. On to Great Stony Hill.Wycombe Wanderer10/09/2020

Walked up lane from Ireshopeburn to join Nuttalls route 10:1 to Three Pikes, Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones.dgresty21/07/2020
Three Pikes, then, Great Stony Hill. Started from lay-by parking (B6277) approx SW from Three Pikes. Hill fog, so no views - very atmospheric however. Had a good view of a barn owl which was flying around close to me.ger17/07/2020
From Great Stony Hill, followed the fence to its end and then across the rough ground. Found a cairn at the summit although GPS said about 50m away from that so did both. Quite a bogfest if wet but it wasn't too bad after dry conditions, descended in a fairly westerly direction direct to where the main bridleway met the road and it was ok. Walk 1.2km up the road to the car which was parked at the start of the track up.JulieB23/06/2020
After Chapelfell Top and Fendrith, headed there from Harthope Head via Noon Hill. Peat was dry which made it much easier from boundary marker near fence to summit. Checked out second cairn with small shelter and spectacular views but was clearly not a competing top. Returned the same way.NorthernWayfarer29/05/2020

Parked by track to Grass Hill farm. Great Stony Hill, Three Pikes, back up the road.PGCE17/05/2020
Roadside parking by gate to track on B6277 to SW. Up track to old mine workings then across moor to summit of Great Stony Hill. Followed fence down to track then onto Three Pikes through several deep ditches and boggy ground. Summit area very haggy.mart079709/08/2019
From Ireshopesburn via Stony Path bridleway, returned down the Grasshill Causeway after a quick detour up Great Stony Hill.Gary Heath04/08/2019
Roadside verge parking (NY 8217 3423). Great Stony Hill first then across to here via Causeway Hill.jonglew25/07/2019
From B6277 near Rough Rigg. Straightforward ascent as far as summit area which was riven with peat hags. Summit is not the large cairn but a smaller pile of stones on a nearby hummock.peter4lc27/02/2019
With Sue from B6277 at track to Coldberry End over to Causeway Hill and over to Three Pikes, GPS to summit as cloud came in over snow covered hags. Bitterly cold wind chill. Return almost same way.Frank21/01/2019
From Great Stony Hill, I descended back to the Grasshill Causeway.I then followed the fence up Three Pikes. When the fence started to turn away from where I wanted to go, I left it and used the GPS to find the unmarked summit. There were lots of peat hags and wet ground but the ground was much drier than I expected. In descent,I went back to Grasshill Causeway, which involved a re-ascent, and followed the road back to Burnhope Reservoir.Sprog15/09/2018

Pleasurable yet marred by peat bogs despite a dry period. 1st of day, beautiful weather. Solo.Tom D07/04/2017
Nuttall Walk EN 10.1 Burnhope Seat from Burnhope Reservoir. Three Pikes, Great Stony Hill, Harwood Common, Burnhope Seat (summit and trig) and Dead Stones. Very wet underfoot! 22km with 560m ascent in 7 hours. (S)silveracorn_alan01/03/2017
Walked from Burnhope Reservoir. Glorious Spring sunshine with a pleasant breeze. This peak is hard going from Coldberry End. Although route finding isn't a problem with a fence to follow and a clear cairn to aim for, the going under foot is boggy and peaty with large peat hags to negotiate. Take care.flockwatcher20/04/2016
FIFTH CONSECUTIVE FINE DAY AT ALSTON BASE CAMP. DROPPED OFF ON B6277 BELOW THREE PIKES AND REASONABLY EASY ASCENT EXCEPT AT TOP. DOWN TO COLL AND EASY OVER GREAT STONY HILL. THEN LONG BUT STRAIGHTFORWARD TRUDGE TO HARWOOD COMMON AND QUICKLY ON TO BURNWOOD SEAT. SUMMIT IS NOT AT TRIG POINT BUT 200+ METRES WEST OVER POOLS AND REEDS - UGH! QUITE BOGGY ON TO DEAD STONES, THEN EASY DESCENT WEST TO BE PICKED UP ON MINOR ROAD AT END OF FOREST.BURGESS29/09/2015
from G.S.H. okay, crossing a peat bog after a nights rain with the wind howling in your ears. not a lot of fun. on the outward i pretty much followed the fence - this in itself was far from easy - huge channels in the peat - as big as anything in the peak district or Wales slowed progress. arriving at the boundary stone the cairn near the summit was eyed with a certain amount of disgruntlement. to be fair though this section nowhere near as bad. though further channels had to be crossed. the summit isnt actually at the cairn - but a nondescript clump a short distance away. sheltered in a hollow nearby. on the return i stayed to the left of the fence by about 100m. then where the fence right angles i just carried straight on. Aside from the odd 10ft deep hole there were few issues encountered. note well!! just watch where you put your feet. also, the 3 pikes referred to could be the 3 dead sheep i came across..stig_nest11/05/2015
From Burnhope Reservoir on wet and misty day on Nuttalls route - went slightly too far SE and hard going in peat bogs - Better ground keeping further W on way back N to Great Stony Hill (Keep W of Fence)celticrambler03/04/2015
From Burnhope reservoir. This hill is a peaty morass not enjoyable especially in gale force winds and driving hailisabelle01/04/2015
