Anti clockwise circuit over Ward Hill, Cuilags and outliers. | vegibagger | 30/08/2022 |
From the east, straight up broad ridge. With Dangerous Dave. Onwards to Sui Fea. Can't believe it's 24 years since I was last here. And a Marilyn I bagged 4 years before Rob Woodall. | Minto | 07/08/2022 |
From the parking area to the east. Straight up the steep heathery east ridge. With Minto. Went over to Sui Fea and down via Top of Hellia. | Dangerous Dave | 07/08/2022 |
With M. From Rackwick via Old Man of Hoy and St. John’s Head. Many Bonxies. Steep descent east. Beautiful sunny day. Risso’s Dolphins seen on the return ferry to Stromness. | douglas_easton | 29/07/2022 |
Straight up from ferry into the mist. Same way back down but veered if to right as not to loose height. With Alastair | tallblond | 01/05/2022 |
Climbed en route to the Old Man | SpudGunn | 24/08/2021 |
Round of Cuilags and Ward Hill from reservoir in between. | Topographer57 | 20/08/2021 |
Ferry from Stromness to Moaness, minibus to Rackwick (£3 each), path to Old Man which continues all the way around further than the 1:50000 map suggests, to over 300m at St John's Head, across rough ground for a short distance to the Tump of Sui Fee and then a further mile to Cuilags. Descended via the slightly less steep South Easterly ridge to the track then back towards Sansy Loch and the ferry. 9.45 miles, about 4hrs walking time. we got the 10am ferry from Stromness and the 4.30pm back with an hour to spare. | JulieB | 10/09/2020 |
from Sui Fea, going left of lochan in col to minimise height loss | KeithByTheC | 10/09/2020 |
1 of 3: Ferry from Stromness at 7.30am. We left one rucsac above Sandy Loch. No path. Watched the Scrabster Ferry from the top. With Karen. | ChrisR | 06/08/2020 |
Ferry from Stromness to climb the 3 North Hoy. Up from pier by road then the obvious very steep ridge. Fine summit...onto Ward Hill | N.Morters | 24/08/2019 |
A 20 minute clamber from the head of Sandy Loch. Not much of a path - just kept ploughing forwards and upwards. | summitter | 24/07/2019 |
From Rackwick - path to Old Man | curlebd | 08/07/2019 |
From parking area south of round hill, low cloud had lifted and clear day. Up to Sandy Loch and then straight up, plenty of Bonxies circling but faint path up seemed to avoid their attention. Great views from the top. Back down and up Ward Hill | PeterD | 28/06/2019 |
From Sandy Loch car park via NE ridge. | Winterfloodian | 03/06/2019 |
Winter ferry times require a no-nonsense approach to Hoy Marilyns, so parked below Round Hill, and scooted up Cuileags on steep, easy ground with a vague path to good views, then down to Sandy Loch and up spongy ground along Water Glen, improving towards the top of Ward Hill. WH has got a very nice summit with good views, but the lower ground is fairly manky. | Gill | 22/02/2019 |
Good parking area SE of Round Hill. From the dam took a direct line to hill summit. Steep but good ground. Descended similar route before veering off to walk up Water Glen for Ward Hill. | jonglew | 22/02/2019 |
With Bryher. Circular via Rackwick and Old Man. So windy we could hardly walk down the steep side back to the Hoy Centre. | jenx | 29/07/2018 |
After Round Hill, then on to Ward Hill. | NormanW | 12/06/2018 |
Up good path in glen from Rackwick and easy enough ascent from just below bealach. Down steep slopes to waterworks and onto Heritage Centre for welcome cuppa tea and biscuits. | AndrewFinnimore | 10/06/2017 |
From Rackwick - path to Old Man - coast to St. John's Head - Sui Fea - Cuilags - ferry. | Chris Peart | 28/06/2016 |
After the Knap of Trowieglen dropped down to the beach at Randwick. Took the Glen path and from the high-point direct up Cuilags past od airplane wreckage. Reversed route to then climb Ward Hill via Water Glen. Dropped steeply down Quoyawa avoiding the crags and a walk back to ferry jetty with a nice cuppa tea on the way at the cafe | nordicstar | 11/06/2016 |
Good circular walk from ferry. Took about 7 hours with some good stops. Enjoyed Rackwick bay. | jenx | 11/06/2016 |
Really enjoyable - Hoy is so different from the other islands. Early morning bus from Lerwick to Stromness for first ferry to Hoy. Moaness Ferry pier - Sandy Loch- Summit - Rackwick where I met the family for walk to the Old Man. Very blustery early on. RSPB warden and nesting sea eagles at Dwarfie Hamars on the way back to Lyness. | benalder284 | 04/04/2016 |
MC. Straight ascent from the car park after having walked to see the Old Man. 28 mins to top. Beautiful sunny day but cloud on top 20m. Decent to glen through aircraft wreckage and direct ascent to Ward Hill. Greasy underfoot and spongy. Into headwind. Top 50m in cloud. Little view. Descent back to Sandy Loch and car. Roun in 2h25m. | Martin66 | 16/03/2016 |

Moaness Pier – Up road & then track to Sandy Loch – Up steep E. ridge of Cuilags – Down S. Ridge past large amounts of wreckage of the Liberator plane which crashed about 100m below the summit on 1 January 1945, killing all 8 crew – NE up path to large cairn marking path junction – SE along path & then headed E. up western slopes to summit of Ward Hill. Chucking it down a fair bit so I was glad to get over the top of this one. | Alex C | 04/06/2014 |
Climbed up steeply after bagging Ward Hill on a breezy sunny day with Jim Bloomer and Tricky Speirs. | Dugswell2 | 27/05/2014 |
Combined with Ward Hill. | bolton | 02/08/2013 |
From Rackwick to Moaness Pier via OMH, St John's Head, Sui Fea top and trig with time to sit on Cuilags to absorb the view with perfect visibility. | summitsup | 26/05/2012 |
Parked at HY22240 03397, to the dam and up the steep south east ridge to Cuilags. Dropped down to pt.116. Followed Burn of Redglen to south west top (with a sneaky view of the Old Man) and then main top of Ward hill. Remembered not to go directly to start point. | Martin R | 16/05/2012 |
Round of Cuilags and Ward Hill from the cafe. Bonxie attacks launched on the last descent. | Eddie | 16/08/2011 |

Long hot round of the North Hoy tops, from Stromness via ferry and minibus to Rackwick then back over past the Old Man. | andy | 10/05/2009 |
Easter, lucky even to get to Hoy, weather so wild most ferries were cancelled. From pier took road to Rackwick as far as Sandy Loch, then turned R up the hill. Stony summit with several cairns and a shelter. | Aye Jimmy | 21/03/2008 |
Staying at Jamie's. | Grinner | 16/10/2005 |
Descended off Ward Hill to find that many Great Skuas were inhabiting the glen. Went straight up and was soon at the top. No views due to very low cloud. | garyhoney | 21/06/2005 |
