Like Isbjorn. No difficulties.Moorponder30/12/2022
Parked at the lower High Dam car park (£3 all day) at Finsthwaite. Followed much of the Greenwood Trail (often shown by the helpful white topped posts), branching off as necessary to visit Stott Park Heights, Great Green Howes, Rusland Heights, Low Heights (tough to reach), Summer Sides Wood, and AW's Finsthwaite Heights. Then a loop on the east side of Finsthwaite for the Tower on Summer House Knott. The whole figure of eight was 17.5km with 750m ascent, taking me 6 hours. Tougher terrain than its modest elevation would suggest.silveracorn_alan28/10/2022
By the sheer density of bracken I can see why everyone regards this hill as a nightmare. However, before the season (before early June) a southern approach is trouble free. Park, as previously suggested, on the apron of the forest track starting east of Black Beck Mires. Follow the roads NE then N to Town End. Pick up the bridleway SW then take the extraction track that runs north off it. This finishes at a high deer gate which can be easily lifted off its hinges at the right hand side. Bear left along the fence to a ruined wall. Follow this upwards along vague tracks to within a few metres of the summit. Bracken only round the top. Still believe a pre-June ascent will be less effort.moorsman19/05/2022
Parked at SD354862. W on PFP from SD358869 to gate, up around perimiter of 2m deer fence (beware old BWF in veg). Glades and int.FPs can be linked up easily trending N, then up NE ridge. No difficulties. Easy peasy.Isbjorn15/02/2022
As others say this top involves wading through jungle. Reached the area using the path from Rusland Heights and then had to fight the undergrowth. Not sure who won an exhausting battletrimarc205/11/2021
A beautiful clear crisp winters day. The view from the top was excellent very much enhanced by Boretree Tarn in the foreground. Unfortunately, getting to the top was rather unpleasant once you leave the footpath from Town End. There are traces of a developing path but overall it was mostly a case of hacking your own way through the bracken.Chris Terrey 07/12/2020
Summit overgrown by juniper after thrashing through primeaval forest to access, lots of moss and yews! Good views.Lovely area- suspect better in winter with less undergrowth.Denise 28/12/2019
From S tip of Boretree tarn. Pick our way through the Juniper to find the high point marked by small cairn.RichardM28/12/2019
3/4 Great Green Hows from High Dam then on good tractor tracks over to Rusland Heights. Then used orienteering poles to lead us over towards the reservoir below Low Heights. Keep slightly south of the summit of Low Heights to avoid most of the Juniper - at one point we had to retreat and try again but found way up in the end, then head North East on various paths back to get Summer Sides Wood and down to Finsthwaite. Small hills, but tough underfoot this took us 4 hours!nickywood107/09/2019
Via track to reservoir that starts just N of Finsthwaite house, then NE ridge. Juniper easier than gorse. Can't think of anywhere where the hills are so low but the scenery so fine as in the environs of Finsthwaite: helped by the reservoirs. On to Summer Sides Wood.Wycombe Wanderer17/02/2019
Really awful bracken. Definitely wasn't shorts weather but never mind. The white signposted path made for a nice descent to Ellerside. Running from Lakeside to Ellerside including swimming in High Dam tarn too. Finsthwaite Heights, Rusland Heights and Low Heights. Lots of cuts on my legs to remind me of this ascent!Fionalevey29/05/2018
Roadside parking at SD 36948 88169. With Rick Nordicstar on pleasant round of 6 hills as per ronaldo333 but with the Wainwright outlier Finsthwaite Heights tacked on the end. 9.5km over a mix of rough, wet ground and easy paths.jonglew09/01/2018
A circuit w Jon Glew of Stott Park Heights, Great Green Hows, Rusland Heights, Low Heights and Summer Sides Wood plus the WO Finsthwaite Heights...nordicstar09/01/2018

Probably the best time to visit, no bracken, from Newby Bridgebardolph02/12/2016
Attempt / attack in July for the full on impenetrable bracken immersion experience. I got as close as easily possible to the summit from the tarn by linking easier going under trees (the tarn itself reached by a bracken struggle on non existent path in summer up from Town End). I then took a deep breath and plunged in over my head on first logged ascent of year through luxuriant bracken and juniper. Good training for Borneo and the like. Machete essential - map case a poor substitute. For added jungle experience I later discovered over 20 itchy red chigger (mite) bites around my ankles and between fingers from grappling with the bracken no doubt. Best to wear full body cover and gloves and boots not fell shoes although I did put on overtrousers. Maybe take a steamroller as well. 5th of 8 tump circuit- this thankfully the worst by far.Chris Pearson10/07/2016
Tump 5 of 5 from Finsthwaite. After Rusland Heights, followed excellent path S then flogged E thru deep bracken, with juniper at summit to add spice. Fought my way down NE, crossed tarn outflow then lovely farm track down to road and strolled back to village, a 4hr circuit rather longer than I'd expected. Then home after a 33 Tump weekend of outrageously good weather.RHW06/09/2015
From s and w. Deep wet bracken and juniper make it quite challenging!peebs06/07/2015
From Rusland Heights. On arrival from the NW the summit appeared to be impregnable gorse and juniper; easiest to approach from S. Summit rock hidden under bush about 1m from cairn.Aye Jimmy27/03/2015

Same round as Jim Bloomer from High Dam pay & display car park. Not an easy summit to get to!David Gradwell16/02/2014
From entrance to High Dam (P&D) carpark (some parking on road). Stott Park heights, Great Green Hows, Rusland Heights, Low Heights and Finsthwaite Heights. Much walking on flattened, dead bracken - you have been warned.jimbloomer17/12/2013
