Made a marathon out of bagging a few hills. Bo'ness Union St cp. John Muir Way to Nethermill Bridge, back Rd to Union Canal. Stile on R after B8046 and easy up Philpstoun Bing N. Descended gently off W end to track to canal bridge. Over and up obvious path to Philpstoun Bing S. Interesting walk round whole crater - felt quite exposed on SE ridge to get hardly walked S Philpstoun Bing additional top. Back on Union canal and crossed at Manse Rd and took lane round N and E of Clarendon Cres, then S to sub stn. Field edge mainly to Parkley Hill. Back same way to canal to Xcite and round rugby ground to Linlithgow Loch. Colt Hill from path to S. Lochside and Bonnytoun farm to fp to golf course. Fairway to Hope Monument and Airngath Hill. Fp to Bo'ness. 42km 400m climb great day. | Lynnebe | 06/03/2024 |
From mapped parking area by canal (NT 0598 7674). North bing first, walking its length dropping down to go over another canal bridge and up to here. Multiple possible high points, 2 others close to the GR given here, and another contender checked out ~330m SW, which gave a couple of metres lower on the GPS. Exited at the main gates and back over canal bridge to car for an interesting 2km walk. | jonglew | 08/02/2023 |
From north top. Followed the track to a rocky outcrop summit. Felt almost as tall as the north top. | JAdair97 | 30/05/2022 |
Pity this bing has lost its Tump status by inches. Entertaining walk round the caldera trying to ascertain HP. | lordtonult | 13/05/2022 |
From CP under road. Good tracks and already well-established woods on the fine North Bing. Crossed bridge to W and did the South one as well - well worth doing. | sclater | 14/03/2022 |
Over canal bridge from N top, clockwise round the rim, very enjoyable, back along towpath to canal parking on B road | agentmancuso | 19/11/2021 |
Followed directions given by others. The exit from the car park needs care. When climbing up, nearly knocked down by a cyclist coming fast not expecting walkers.
Felt this was the nicer of the 2 bings | Hirta | 21/12/2020 |
Parked on the southern side of the canal by the rocks at the entrance to the quary. (on the north side of the gates is a path past. Could have gone straight up onto the ridge from the road, but followed it intp the middle... Nice little hill, 20mins | Nicky C | 21/12/2020 |
As per Jubilado's route | curlebd | 01/03/2020 |
More like a quarry than a bing. North summit in trees felt highest. | hillsman | 19/03/2018 |
Parked at canal car park and entered bing at the side of metal fence and gate. Followed the wide road up to the hollowed out centre bearing right after that up to what gps told me was the summit. It looks rather undercut by wind and weather and I would not fancy standing there for too long! Not such good views as North Bing | Jubilado | 01/02/2018 |

Parked near the entrance to Philpstoun Bing South. Then across the canal bridge bagging its cut mark then down and round to towpath then up Philpstoun Bing North. A fine view point even on a damp grey afternoon. Return to car then bagged Philpstoun Bing South. | Dugswell2 | 16/09/2017 |
did the whole crater rim to make sure hit the summit | summitter | 05/03/2017 |
both bings from the canal car park. | robertphillips | 24/02/2017 |
Into the caldera then up the steep slopes. | Play2End | 03/02/2017 |
After PB North from carpark. The boring northerly summit is probably higher than the one on the fragile rim at the other side of the quarry. Watch out for the stray clay pigeons which Hopetoun Hose shoot. Then walked back along canal to Linlithgow. | Thearlaichdubh | 14/12/2016 |
Bing bingeing. Fascinating. Half hill, half caldera, half slag heap, half leafy canal cutting. | alda | 02/07/2015 |
Agreed that the north top is the highest. But as Minto points out, there is an apparently higher bing just across the canal. I would give the area an hour or two... | Pete R | 18/05/2015 |
From NE. N summit probably higher but not by much. My gps reckons sw summit p15 and se summit p22, latter has the feel of a volcanic crater rim, colourful in late evening light. | RHW | 09/05/2015 |
Parking next to canal, (N of bridge, E side). There are two bings accessible here. The North Bing is definitely higher than South Bing. And at least 30m ascent up either !

The North Bing has one clear summit; path opposite track to car park. Bends around, then up, and up some more !

The South Bing summit could be one of 3 (or more candidates):
1) top in the trees to N, overlooking canal.
2) top slightly W of here, exposed outcrop.
3) on S side of bing, on crater rim.

Whole landscape is well worth at least 30 mins exploration for each bing. | Minto | 15/10/2014 |
P at canal. Path past the locked gates on RHS. Track and path to wooded summit. | chrisbien | 21/09/2014 |
