8 of 10 as part of 27 mile bike ride. Entered the country park then round the back of the hill and pushed bike up the steps once at the top great freeroll back downThe-Z-Man13/01/2024
From parking area alongside allotments to W. at SJ 87785 52970, S. along pavement for about 100m to fingerpost - Turned left along path over footbridge & then up a well-worn dirt path to summit by small oak tree.gerrybowes29/12/2023
Parked near an abandoned coal mine walk down a muddy path then went left then right then up 264 steps to the top which had a sign and a camera but the summit was next to a small oak tree through some plants. With Dad and Mum.speedyclimber14/10/2023
A circuit from Whitley road, upto the summit plateaux the high point on edge with tree. Great views.Dazingdale22/04/2023
From Whitfield Rd, up on good footpaths that were in the process of being made even better.Andrew Pearson18/04/2023
From housing estate to west over the footbridge, next to which a play-fight between two youngsters turned serious after one of them lost his shoe and the other picked it up and threatened to throw it into the pond below. Nice hill with information boards about mining, good views and cctv cameras.Nick Canute17/04/2022

Parked at the allotments. Path to top. Old ruined film set for Dr Who near by.Play2End06/07/2020
Residential roadside parking (SJ 8777 5285). Looks and feels like an old spoil heap. Nice views though, and well vegetated.jonglew08/08/2019
Used entrance from Whitfield Road. Pleasant views from summit, especially of Old Coal Mine.iron_sun11/07/2019
Quick walk up to the top. CCTV at the top. Ok views but too many housing estates ruin the vibe.ironwolf11/07/2019
Up directly from the cyclepath to the east, down steps to the north.Moorponder10/01/2019
Parked at SJ828533 and followed cycle path and then track to summit. Interesting views from summit.Ramblingpaul04/12/2018
Parking at SJ 87704 52805. Interesting industrial heritage. 50m ascentRoguePulsar21/09/2018
In a hot breeze we ascended a partly tarmaced path through parched grass to the obvious top with good views of the former colliery, the country park, Mow Cop and adjacent housing estate. Since even the spoil heaps have been extensively landscaped and this is a bing, we decided the high point was a stone platform within a low circular wall on top.Adjacent nettled covered ground was of similar height as the base of the concrete circle. One of the few tumps with CCTV on top. We parked due west in between Fegg Hayes and Chell Heath in small carpark by allotments.Denise 06/08/2018
From the W. Open access to landscaped spoil of Chatterley Whitfield country park. Track to CCTV monitored summit. The man-made stone podium at the N end of the flat, level summit feels fair game for a man-made hill, it also offers good views of the old colliery buildings and the not too distant Old Man of Mow.RichardM06/08/2018
From W. to ground by oak tree and stroll around rest of the summit areaRobertP15/07/2018

Parked in car park at 87786 52969. I felt a certain sadness for the ex-mine. 4,000 people worked there at its peak. The buildings are all still there but no money to keep it open as a museum. There was also a wreath to the Bevan Boys from WWII. The hill or slag heap is straightforward and offers a wide view.clivevilla15/12/2017
From the SE, parked just after village of Cornhill. Country Park tracks lead directly or indirectly to summit area. Fine view of old colliery.Aye Jimmy04/05/2017
From Oxford Road and over the bridge at SJ879529. Watered the oak tree. Last day's hospital visiting.summitsup02/05/2017
Last few I can get to on a 1/2 day excursion. Surprisingly pleasant looking down on most complete old coal mine left in UK.Mark Sims01/05/2017

From estate road to west.rhalstead26/03/2017
From Sneyd hill via b5051 & walk in through the nature reserve. Of the 3 spoil heaps in these parts which are now tumps this is by far the best. The sudden reveal of the colliery below and indeed Mow cop on the horizon were welcome suprises.stig_nest14/03/2017
As for RHW.arranc20/02/2017
Bagged with Paul Webster to recomplete the Stoke Tumps after parking on the minor road to the east on a foggy afternoon.Dugswell230/12/2016
A diversion off M6 to bag the two new tumps. Parked by allottments. Thick fog meant no views from top or on ascent.PeterD30/12/2016
Nice walk from the west.Alan Caine28/12/2016
Not exactly dancing in the rain (expertly performed by the overall winners on 'Strictly' this week) as I wrestled with a big golf umbrella in the sudden heavy rain and gusting wind, but I was a lot happier and drier than two glum looking dog walkers and their 5 soggy labradors coming down the slope. Visited the small tree recently identified as the true summit by the recent survey team visit. Interesting history on web of the colliery incl. disaster of 1881(explosion as a hot flue from a risky underground blacksmith's furnace ignited coal dust and methane). Underground tours stopped in the 1980s due to flooding and methane build up but surface tours of the prominent old winding wheels and buildings available still to 'Friends of Chatterley Whitfield' (£5 membership).Chris Pearson21/12/2016
Not at its scenic best in December but still a vast improvement on the waste heap that it used to be. I remember the bing being twice as high and being a black upturned cone of vast size.Campbell Singer15/12/2016
Second ascent. Attended a G & J survey together with various other hill bagging worthies. ( They know who they are. Thanks again guys for making it a memorable day) Then on to another potential TuMP at a secret location. (Not secret anymore - Glebedale Park.)ngthack13/12/2016
With brothers grim and survey team from good car park adjacent to allotments to west at SJ 87781 52958. Also present were the web master himself and Nigel Thackrah (on a second visit). A good day was had by all despite the iffy weather. Thanks for the scrumptious mince pies, Nigel.David Gradwell13/12/2016

From w, cross impressive bridge, turn R snd immediately L on summit path. Moonlight bag on way home to recomplete Stoke tumps. View from summit ok but not quite up to last night's Edinburgh view from Salisbury Crags. Chatterley Whitfield is country park nameRHW11/12/2016
Could not keep away. Short morning trip from Manchester.GordonAdshead27/11/2016
Parked at SJ 878529. Along road for 50 m & in through main entrance of country park. Over bridge & straight up hill. Low stone circular wall & paved area on summit. Two CCTV cams on tall poles. Took readings with GPS, then investigated another possible high point to south 50 m away. Hill well vegetated with young trees on lower slopes. Went down steps towards colliery to establish col, but inaccessible due to high security fence around disused colliery. Continued along cycle track back towards main entrance until apparently level with col in colliery & took further readings. Lots on Wikipedia about Chatterley Whitfield colliery. Record production of over a million tons of coal for two years running. Spoil heap used to be twice as high, until the Aberfan disaster, after which it was reduced to the current height over 5 years. Could have been almost a HuMP. Thanks to David for the heads up on this one. May have beaten AJ & RHW to it, unless they've got armchair bags up their sleeves. ngthack17/11/2016
Been here many times over the years. Suspected it had 'TuMP' potential which was confirmed on my last ascent on Nov 13.David Evans13/11/2016
