Made a 2.5 hr circular by parking at pull in by UU building at 69771 90771, follow decent track south and then west which mostly follows Ship Canal under Warburton bridge. You end up approaching access bridge from SE, dropping down to the left of gate reveals an easy way over the barrier. Follow small pipeline as others, though a couple other options you could take. continued West under Thelwall, eventually picking up FP just before the locked gate, which eventually leads to Mersey Way. Enjoyable.Alfa1M07/01/2024
Exactly as Bolton: parked at end of access road at 679896. Walked south to the bridge. At the locked gates take the muddy/rough path on the left which wends its way round to the bridge. An easy up and over the barrier to gain the road bridge. Followed the black gas pipeline which is on the right about 100 yards after the bridge. Sunday afternoon, nobody about.PGCE26/02/2023
Parked near A57 and walked in. High barrier with barbed wire just before bridge so I had to detour through the brambles and mud to get to the river and managed to get onto the bridge that way.JK11/02/2022
One of the closest hills to my home so it was about time I did the climb. Parked at end of access road at 679896. Walked south to the bridge. At the locked gates take the muddy/rough path on the left which wends its way round to the bridge. An easy up and over the barrier to gain the road bridge. Followed the black gas pipeline which is on the right about 100 yards after the bridge. Large tanker heading to Ellesmere Port on the canal. Lovely open space on the summit area. Solo and also saw nobody else on a bright sunny day.bolton01/01/2022
Same way as Clive, nice walk, surprised to see someone walking their dog.PeterD10/10/2021
It was a weekend so nobody around in secure premises. Parked at the end of the drive at 67970 89603, walked up the drive, past a couple of gates then followed the path round to the right to a barbed wire topped pair of gates that I managed to just squeeze under. Then on to another gate that I climbed over. From there there was soon a grassy track sloping up to the right which eventually doubled back right to the summit.clivevilla28/08/2021
Followed instructions and came at it from the canal path from Warburton direction. Found a gap in the fence and nipped over the gate to cross the bridge.GaynorSeymour06/12/2020
Inluded on a bit of an adventurous jog. Easy access. No problems Interesting to read some previous cpmments, they seem to have made it difficult for themselves :-).Shutterlag27/09/2020
Finding places like this is one of the great joys of Tump bagging. From end of track to NE, then straightforward. Beautiful mature woodland. The air very clear and the surroundings green after recent rain; surprisingly far ranging views. Saw a heron perched on a rusting tank, no doubt enjoying the solitude of possibly the least frequented bit of the Mersey.Wycombe Wanderer06/07/2020
Final tump of the day and this to complete Warrington ua, having visited Alvanley Cliff, Halton Castle and Appleton park. Parked on main road and used fp before walking along field edge then through woodland to gain track. Slid underneath and continued to barricade, once over i continued on track that very gradually climbs and curves round to the top, passing nice patches of Birds Foot Trefoil and the biggest swathe of brambles I have ever seen! Continued to follow pipe on descent back to track. Followed outward route before heading back via outward route. Warrington completed!Dazingdale31/05/2020
2 of 3 on 42 mile bike ride. From Manchester road followed track down to locked gate. Tied bike up and hopped over. Walked upto summit. Good views for a small hillThe-Z-Man24/03/2020
Depot opening times are Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm during which times manned security checks are about. Turned back at the end of the entry road. Tried to approach from Moat Lane to the west but fence unclimable and the chinks in the fencing lead to soupy, watery marsh land so didn't try this. Returned at 7pm, in the dark and was able to reach summit unhindered.moorsman05/03/2020
Did with Mart on Friday evening after wild swimming at Pickmere. Parked on access road then thru and over gates across the Butchersfield canal bridge then followed methane pipe to the summit which gave a good view across the Cheshire Plain.John Eley14/06/2019
For the less slender and less agile of us, I managed to follow gerrybowes advice to the letter in the pre-dawn pitch black.David Evans03/03/2019
Late on a Sunday afternoon seemed to work well, parking at SJ 6797 8959. Easy gate to pop over at SJ 6809 8909 (or slide under if you want to get unnessecarily dirty), then the bridge barricade to negotiate, again very easy. Across the bridge to locate the methan extraxtion pipe and follow it up and across to the top. Walked on several hundred metres past the given GR for the summit but all flat up there. Nice early evening views across the busy A57 and to Warrington.jonglew25/11/2018
White roads from NE both gated. Even if the BIFFA access is open - don't - I drove back to a locked gate. As mentioned in previous logs, the bridge over the river must be crossed. I slid under it - plastic bag helpful. The black pipe to follow up the hill is at SJ 6796 8897carole engel17/11/2018
Same route as everyone else. A very tight squeeze to get under the gate. Then a lovely stroll through very natural looking woodland.Colin Crawford06/10/2017
Morning stopover on the way to Scotland with Alex C. Parked by Woodside Farm at SJ676895, crossed field and thrashed through woods to come out on track right by the bridge. Easily went under gate onto bridge and followed track all the way to summit.Tony J12/06/2017
En route to Old Trafford to see Man Utd v Chelsea. Down road to barrier, turn right past gas plant and climb 8 ft gate. Barbed wire missing from left side. Over/round another gate onto bridge. A lovely natural haven. Walk straight on about 100 ms and opposite an old rusting storage tank there is a small gas plant behind which there is a methane pipe which leads to the top. Easter Sunday so no issue with access as nobody around. Warrington recompleted.Campbell Singer16/04/2017
From NE as RHW. Being Sunday thought it would be deserted, but on approaching Biffa plant, machinery could be heard. No-one about, it was automatic methane gas collecting machinery at work. The black pipe starts about 100m beyond the bridge, goes straight up through the trees. Interesting spot and they've even planted a few daffies, narcissi and cowslips! Scrambling bikes tearing about in the wood to the E.Aye Jimmy02/04/2017
Parked on BIFA approach road. BIFA man let me through the huge gate onto the site and showed me the bridge, but would not let me across - private, etc.arranc20/03/2017
From NE, Moat Lane. No need to climb over anything if you're slender :-) Once across bridge, path up beside black pipe; HP by grassy track just W of E end of summit meadow. Has matured into a nice hill in an interesting location. Warrington recompletedRHW12/02/2017
From roadside parking on Moat Lane at 683899, W. to start of access road - Down access road & after second vehicle barrier turned R. along concrete road to old locked security gates & fence at 681891 - Left along narrow motorbike track for about 70m, through wide gap in fence & then W. along motorbike tracks to river bank below old railway bridge - Stepped between two crash barriers & up onto bridge - Along vehicle track which heads W. before doubling back on itself to within a few metres of the unmarked summit. An interesting and trickier access exploration than I'd initially expected but hinted at by those who'd trodden before. Good feeling being on top of a remote man made island that only Biffa employees plus now an occasional bagger, will ever visit! Good views south to the church spire in Lymmvegibagger29/01/2017
Parked at 676896 and walked in along field boundary, but came back up the main track. Nearly defeated at the main gate as I was not strong enough to climb it - or get under it. However I followed the motorcycle track through the woods and reached the bridge by squeezing between two of the old skips - presumably placed to stop access. No problem with the gate leading over the bridge. Took the island track running anticlockwise and found a track through the brambles up to the summit ridge.GordonAdshead29/01/2017
Parked just off A57 to the north. Key to access is bridge at 680890, but will not divulge the details, to preserve the exploratory nature for future ascensionists. An excellent discovery by theTumpfinder General, Chris Pearson.ngthack01/01/2017
A very interesting hill visited via the Mersey Way with Paul Webster. It has been generating electricity since 1995 from gas collected from the former landfill hill.Dugswell230/12/2016
Pleased to spot this one (originally from high up the M6 Thelwell Viaduct). On my exploratory visit I bumped in to a friendly engineer who stated that landscaping was finished in 1995 after life as landfill since when Biffa have been collecting the gas to turn into electricity, but its days are now about done. He said the site would remain under the watch of Biffa for another 15 years or so in order to draw off methane and deal with leachates (lovely)- He confirmed that new landfill hills do indeed collapse inwards and downwards and he had seen other sites where once steep sides and become much more gentle with time, however in his opinion this was now unlikely to happen here after 21 years. Once my new friend had moved on - a quick heave ho over the gate (no keep out sign)and across the 'Bridge over the Mersey' and hence to the summit. A fine mini adventure to an unusual spot.Chris Pearson21/12/2016
Date is estimate, but close. When living in Lymm twice did a long run into Warrington, then used the north bank of canal from Westy, Warrington with no difficulty on access. Right through under Thelwall viaduct of M6. I know I went to the top as once I thought be fun to go up on the bank for the view. Yesterday in passing I looked down on the top from the M6 and has barely changed but for some grass. The way out east was OK past Rixton Halls and then used the toll road to get back to Lymm. ABout an 18 mile round trip IIRCnordicstar06/06/1999
Visited this a couple of times years ago from Woolston walking under M6 before all the fencing went up to stop access. Never thought it would become a hill.mart0797blank
