Logged Descriptions  (logged by 7 users)ByDate of Ascent
Straight up from just N of the mill. A third of the way up (above the best pasture) passed through a cluster of tumbled old crofts - relicts of the C19th clearances when an astonishing 318 crofters were evicted from Wesidale. History tells us many starved, froze, moved to the cities or coast looking for work, or emigrated. From the top the current chewing up of the landscape visible for the Viking wind farm construction-dual carriage way size access tracks snaking up the moorland. It looked like a scene from the Monkey Wrench Gang -with Hayduke no doubt somewhere about. Thankfully - environmental considerations have come a long way since Edward Abney wrote his book that inspired the US environmental movement. Here SNH have approved the extensive measures will be taken to prevent hill peat drying out, including drainage control and the restoration and creation of small lochans to keep it waterlogged. Floating roads will also be used in places to minimise damage to peat.Chris Pearson24/03/2021
