Staying at Coniston YH with Alex McBride for the weekend, we headed up Walna Scar Road (a track really) for a circuit covering eight summits. Five of which were Hewitts and Wainwrights, two were just Wainwrights and one was just a Hewitt. Alex is bagging the Wainwrights, while I'm doing the Hewitts. Summits in order: Dow Crag (774m), H and W Old Man of Coniston (803m), H and W Brim Fell (796m), W Grey Frair (773m), H and W Great Carr (785m), W Swirl How (802m), H and W Black Sails (745m), H Wetherlam (763m), H and Wchillyman821/10/2023

The classic route up Coniston Old Man with Sasha on a cracking day! Follow the ridge over to Dow Crag with it's impressive face, before descending via Brown Pike. Completion of a walk started two years earlier (almost to the day) where a flying visit through the Lakes coincided with awful weather: Goat's Water was turned into a broiling sea by the wind, and the Old Man looked less than benevolent high above the cloud line. What a contrast!hjb6827/08/2021
With Val. Parked at the high level Walna Scar car park and followed the Walna Scar track to the pass. Ascended Brown Pike then Buck Pike and on to Dow Crag. Descended to the col north of Goats's Water then ascended to the peak north of the Old Man (796m) then south to the Old Man. Going well so reversed the route to Walna Scar track and ascended Walna Scar and White Maiden then back to descent Walna Scar track to the car park. Dry weather but cloud drifting across so good views one minute and none the next.mike.hoult24/08/2021
Set off at 4am having had to cancel Helvellyn with dad and becca. Weather said mist and fog. I asked Becca if she fancied taking Blu and Haz up Old Man of Coniston. After the easy drive the weather wasnt looking great. Parked at Walna scar. Beat the cloud for an incredible cloud inversion. Becca and Haz loved it. Made our way back down passed Goats water and back home for dinner time. I later went to the gym then on Saturday went to the away day at Telford followed by a week at Skyeside campsite with Bec and her family.Scotty 2 Hotty20/08/2021

First proper Fell besides Gowbarrow and Little Mell which were basically warms ups for Coniston. We meant to come down Little How Crags as it was late and Jonny had Night shift. We accidentally overshot it by a mile and wound up going over Swirl How and coming down High Fell. Total navigational nightmare trying to find the car. got directions from a local to the wrong carpark and it turned out we were on the right path before asking him. Chaos.DylannnCarter05/05/2019

Beautiful clear day, from Coniston, we took the path up along Church Beck and the long slog up past the disused mines, Low Water and eventually onto the top of Coniston Old Man. With such a clear day, we were able to see over to the Isle of Man. The top was fairly busy, so we dropped of the back towards Goat Hawse and eat some lunch overlooking Goat's Water. Following the bridleway back round the front of Old Man, with the sweltering hot weather, we took a dip in the beck, and basked in the sun to dry out a little. We got a little lost on the way back, but decided to drop into Coniston for a well earned pint in the sun. 5hr 45mins: 11.5km; 850mByronHaywood29/08/2016

I started my ascent from Dixon Ground above the village of Coniston. The path was steep and unrelenting, passing through an old copper mine and climbing to Low Water, resembling an ampitheatre. At one point two thick cables barred the way, but it turned out that this was not the path, which doubled back at that point. From Low Water it became even steeper as it zig-zagged towards the summit of Coniston Old Man. As I had started quite early, there were only a handful of other walkers and I was able to enjoy the superb vista of the Scafells, Bowfell and Crinkle Crags.peter4lc24/08/2016

A beautiful winter's day with Lesley, blue sky, sunshine and snow cover above 300 metres. Up the Old Man first via the less trodden SE path. Icy cold breeze on summit and mist swirling in from the west. double halo broken spectres. Very busy summit. Someone smoking an e-cigarette - I got a whiff of the vapour! Along to Brim Fell then compass work and ice axe out for the misty descent out to Raven Tor . Someone had built a snowman on the path down to Low Water. Nasty icy main path where all the snow had been compressed by the hordes of walkers, including many dogs and families heading up up The Old Man. Easier to walk on the snow alongside. 50 +cars at Walna Scar road end (New Year week). We had left ours in Coniston, not risking the unknown ice on the road up -a wise move.Chris Pearson28/12/2014

Parked up at car park at Walna Scar Road then set off west along Walna Scar to Brown Pike, and then headed along ridge line to Buck Pike then Dow Crag before heading up to summit of the Old Man. Quite a few people up on the summit making the most of the good weather. After a sandwich and cup of tea carried on northwards to Swirl How. Was going to end it there and head back down but decided instead to take advantage of the good weather and carried on to Wetherlam. Nice gentle stroll down past the coppermines before heading back to the car. Total time was about 6 1/2 hours. Very nice day out.GaryG02/05/2014

Peter, Lee & Ian. April 7th. A perfect day after 4° of frost. We arrive in Coniston before the crowds and the boys set off on mountain bikes. They have a hard struggle to Levers Water. The path then got snowy and slippery but with determination 3 bikes reached the top! The views are glorious with a dusting of snow. After lunch with great joy the cyclists proceeded before descending through snow - with fall offs to Goats Water. The cyclists took the valley route to the Walna Scar Road.PeteF07/04/1990

Colin, Joan, Peter, Ian & Willie. Easter Monday. The weather was less promising but we drove to Coniston and parked above the station walking along the Goat Water path and then ascending through the mines. After lunch we went up into the cloud. We saw and heard a Ring Ouzle and then nothing much until well off the top! Peter took us into several levels on the descent. One of which was really quite extensive with a railed incline and ladder. We had a good venison casserole. Willie sick overnight.PeteF27/03/1989

Joan, Peter, Ian, Christopher Baldwin, Willie & dogs. Tuesday May 26th. A lovely day and the boys settle on the Coniston horseshoe which gives me time to relax & dose while they investigate the levels. Park at old station and walk up towards Coppermines then cut up to track up to Low Water beautifully blue and cool. Direst walk up nose avoiding the busy main track gave us a lovely private lunch spot at a new 'to us' cavern. Wandered over Brim Fell, Swirl How, etc and find the extra 30 mins onto Wetherlam for the delightful ridge descent to Coniston.PeteF26/05/1987

DANGER! Foolishly set off up the icy south slopes having forgoten my ice axe. ( 3 months ago the snow was soft_ not today - linked crunchy snow patches and rocks together - but soon got too high for common sense where a slip on iron hard snow and verglas rocks could have been very nasty. Wanted off. Only 100 feet or so below summit -what was I thinking? Not easy to reverse - awkwardly got down -very relived - hopefully a useful lesson learned. Never again without an ice axe.Chris Pearson07/02/1986
