Continuation from Penamnen via Foel Fras. A rather boggy/ squelchy route which had a path most of the way. A couple of long jump/ fence scrambling bogs but nothing too taxing. This hill sits a fair way from any other high ground & as such the views on a good day like today are stunning. Siabod dominates the view. Descent via track to 274584; 351595 then forest tracks to bridge over river & parking spot on Sarn Helen. A good route which would benefit from a long dry spell. With Dan. | stig_nest | 10/02/2024 |
With Joan and Rhosyn up track from Dolwyddelan. | PeteF | 28/01/2024 |

Simple but quite long bag btw holiday lets in Lleyn and nr Llangollen. We started at Dolwyddean, a relief from the A5 by Llyn Ogwen on a sunny, windy day. Up the track to the shelter- just as well we checked the ridge with the HP! | pwheeler | 19/03/2022 |

Y Ro Wen from GR: SH 73757 52163. Ascent via track and descent direct to forest track. | ronaldo333 | 22/05/2021 |
From Dolwyddelan station car park. Up through the forest to avoid the worst of the wind (upper track very muddy due to forest harvesting). Back down the main track. | PGCE | 14/11/2020 |
A splendid walk along a mainly grassy ridge from the car park at Crimea Pass on a very warm September day, visiting Moel Farlwyd, Moel Penamnen, Foel-fras and Y Ro Wen. Then return along the ridge, cutting below the summits on the south side to the Crimea Pass. Followed by a quick up and down of Moel Dyrnogydd. 18.5km with 810m ascent in 6 hours. With Rufus from Dolwyddelan train station. Took the vehicular track to summit and descended NW to pick up a forest track back to Dolwyddelan. | jacobrichmond | 25/03/2020 |
CMC walk (Arwel) | greenways | 15/12/2018 |
As gerrybowes. 5.18 miles round trip in about 1h 45m. Really very straightforward although fairly relentlessly uphill at the end of a long day bagging. | clivevilla | 23/07/2018 |
Mini expedition and practice wild camp with Mike. From track near the Fairy Glen outside Betwy y Coed, up and through the woods on a good track to the C road, then on along a boggy track in the woods to Bwlch y Groes. Picked up ascending track to Y Ro Wen in the cloud before contouring round to wild camp between the reservoirs of Llynnau Barlwyd on the seemingly only piece of grass in the area. Windy, misty night. Walked out next morning to the Crimea Pass. | richard69 | 12/04/2018 |
From the car park at Crimea Pass. Moel Farlwyd, Moel Penamnen, Foel-Fras and Y Ro Wen. Beautiful winter day, very cold but clear and sunny. | Alunrees33 | 24/11/2017 |
599m | The Grouse | 14/06/2017 |
From Foel Fras skirted the forest in wet terrain. Great track down from summit to Dolwyddelan for pick up. Just over 9 miles in clear conditions. 4 Deweys from Crimea Pass after drop off there. | bolton | 09/06/2017 |
Me and Alf from Dolwyddelan. | jrj | 27/04/2017 |
On a sunny windy day with Richard, Bernard and Sarah, from Penmachno, via Moel Pen y bryn. The high point is not where the stone windshelter is located, but a little north east. The forest track back to Penmachno was very muddy. | Denise | 15/10/2016 |
With Denise, Bernard and Sarah. Superb views of the high peaks of Snowdonia. High point is 150m N of the stone horseshoe shelter. | RichardM | 15/10/2016 |
Climbed while walking with Sarah, Richard and Denise. | Bernard | 15/10/2016 |
My second hump of the day. A sense of achievement, although muddy and tired at the end. Thank you Richard and Denise for introducing Bernard and I to this new challenge. | SarahS | 15/10/2016 |
Parked at SH776508 and took forest track to SH766500 where a cycle path heads W to Bwlch Ewigod. I made a steep direct ascent of the hill from here, mostly on grass. The good track from Dolwyddelan looks a better route, however. | Chris Peart | 09/09/2016 |
Dolwyddelan Station car park (738522) - Over bridge & up Pentre-bont High Street - At yellow grit bin turned left & up forest roadway & then excellent track to within 25m of the small summit cairn hidden in tussock grass. Continued to Foel-fras. (S) | gerrybowes | 24/08/2016 |
From the car park at the Crimea Pass. Moel Farlwyd, Moel Penamnen, Foel Fras, Y Rowen and Clogwyn Dolwyddelan. | AlunRees31 | 06/07/2016 |
Start Dolwyddelan, up good forest tracks. Evening ascent. Fabulous sunset of the Snowdon Range on the way down. | hevslbeale21 | 12/04/2016 |
Excellent track from Dolwyddelan all the way to the summit. Track was clogged with snow in places but otherwise very straightforward. | Campbell Singer | 21/01/2016 |
Track from Dolwyddelan. And glad of its ease on a showery day with strong winds. | Colin Crawford | 12/03/2015 |
From railway station up land rover track to cairn, taking in summit (small cairn) on way. Tried to descend through trees - not a good idea - returned to top and down track. | SS | 21/04/2014 |
Walk from Dolwyddelan to Blaenau. Wild and windy and very boggy in places, particularly around the head of Cwm Penamnen. Straightforward plod up with excellent views atop. | Jake994 | 02/01/2014 |
Done in conjunction with Moel Pen-y-bryn, walking from Penmachno to Dolwyddelan. | Alex C | 22/11/2013 |
Approached from Dolwyddelan heading ESE and S to Y Ro Wen. Good track hardly used. Good large cairn on top excellent for a navigational point. Summit was part of a round taking in Foel Fras and Moel Penamnen. Progression from Y Ro Wen on a southerly heading becomes wilder and navigation a must in bad weather. A nice easy summit to reach, nothing technical just a pleasant walk to its summit. | Jimbo | 07/08/2013 |
En route Blaenau Ffestiniog to Dolwyddelen. Trod on all the lumps as it's not clear to me which is highest. | summitsup | 10/07/2013 |
Park in Dolwyddelan station car park. Wide path leads all the way to the (new) top at 746500 - 5 or 6 stones mark the spot. | arranc | 01/06/2013 |
From dolwyddelan, y ro wen, foel Fras, moel penmaen | spooksthehorse | 04/05/2013 |
Penmachno - Roman Bridge - Dolwyddelan. Soggy day & some very boggy areas to negotiate on the approach from Pen-y-bryn via SH766488. Worn trail appeared on the descent S to skirt top of forestry. Spotted a stile for the ROW that enters forest after ground starts rising towards Foel-fras. | Smudge | 23/11/2012 |
From Dolwyddelan. Wide good track goes all the way to the summit. Good walk. | destaylor | 02/03/2012 |

Second ascent, as unsure I reached 599m HP on 24/03/08. This time from Dolwyddelan, a much better route than from Penmachno. | Man of Kernow1 | 06/03/2011 |
Climbed this after doing the Moel Penamnen Deweys. Good path along ridge with stiles. Large shelter at top but high point appears to be the grassy top about 100m to the north. GPS gave 2m height difference. | chriswatson | 17/07/2010 |
Parked at end of narrow road with grass in centre by an archeological site at GR 732 495. Walked to end of track then up through gap in trees to Foel fras then foolowed tree line round to Ro-wen. With SH/RO. | wombourne | 13/07/2010 |
