Mynydd Tynewydd (Mynydd Ystradffernol) > Hirwaun Common from GR: SN 92222 02082 | Hippster | 29/05/2023 |
Parked in picnic area, well trodden route to wide forest track which followed to bend to the WSW of top. Up a trod to narrow fire break with yellow ribbons then right at firebreak junction and into trees for top. Much easier than expected. | PeterD | 18/11/2022 |
Forest road then path along firebreak. Much easier than expected. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 25/11/2021 |
From the picnic area at SN 922 020, along the forest road and then up forest rides as others to Mynydd Tynewydd. Then along forest/wind farm roads to SN 942 032 and along rough grassy track to Hirwaun Common. WSW back to forest tracks and main road. | PGCE | 02/04/2021 |
1/6 Dewey day. From the picnic area at SN 922 020, along the forest road and then up forest rides as others to Mynydd Tynewydd. Then along forest/wind farm roads to SN 942 032 and along rough grassy track to Hirwaun Common. From there back to the main wind farm road to the A4061 at SN 922 027. Made the mistake of trying to follow FP diagonally over open area. A combination of huge tussocks, burnt heather and very wet underfoot made this section very unpleasant, until decent track along the escarpment edge met, then easy going along edge with short diversion to locate the Trig at the summit of Craig y Llyn. Returned to the car easily via wind farm road. 17km with 350m ascent in 4 hours. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 22/07/2020 |
Circular walk taking in Hirwaun Common, Mynydd Tynewydd [Mynydd Ystradffernol],Craig y Llyn & Craig y Llyn (boundary) | Arbie | 23/03/2020 |
Parked at 92250 02087 the car park was closed for some reason but still plenty of space for several cars in front of the barrier. Followed forest roads to the turbine directly north of top and used fire breaks to reach the summit, One hour 15 minutes for just over Four miles. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 21/03/2020 |

Started at 924019 - in via wide track - also followed GerryBowes directions below and found them spot on - ta | wychwood | 19/04/2019 |
From 925018. Very wide track. Made good use of bike and GPS. Can’t beat modern technology. | Campbell Singer | 01/09/2018 |
From the picnic car park at the head of Cwm Rhondda off the A 4061. Took a track east into the forest, then forest road south to its end past wind turbines. Then hard-going south in a wide break in the trees past a fallen tree, and then firebreak west to the twin tops. Returned the same way. With MP and AW. | Man of Kernow1 | 25/08/2018 |
Gerrybowes directions spot on. 2.39 miles 44 mins. | clivevilla | 14/03/2018 |
Parked in entrance to forest track at 925018 - SSE along good track to bend at 934008 - ENE across tussocks & then along firebreak - At firebreak junction, turned right & then a short distance along firebreak to the summit hump which lies a few yards into the trees. (S) | gerrybowes | 02/02/2018 |
A tricky one to reach or at least I made hard work of it. Walked up from the car park to NE first on a track to the ridge then S along the ridge on wind farm roads but then the road stopped just by one of the turbines after which it was a slog as Jon says over rough ground and W down a firebreak to the high point. Returned to the ridge and onwards S to the trig point which I also made a mess of finding. | Father Ted | 02/05/2017 |
From the Hen Dre'r Mynydd car park on A4061. 8 mile circular walk to do Hirwaun Common and 2 x trig pillars also. FP and wind farm roads initially then into conifer plantation for a slog - not particularly pleasant, but then neither is walking under massive wind turbines in full speed mode. On to the eponymous trig pillar. | jonglew | 11/01/2017 |
From road and along forest track. Not my favourite hill. | Ramblingpaul | 29/11/2016 |
From road end out on forestry track then firebreak to rather undefined summit. Wandered further along as it looked higher (probably an illusion). | SS | 15/03/2015 |
3/7 Climbed up from A4061 along right of way marked up but not kept well so would not advise anyone to do that route in summer. Summit is being felled and prepared for wind farm. Easy to locate beside wooden stockade at edge of cleared area | Fergalh | 14/03/2015 |
Walked down to SE to A4061. All part of a new wind farm. Followed forest road and then forest rides to summit. Summit quite easy to miss. It's hidden by trees to one side of the ride. Secondary summit mentioned looks to be artificial. Whole area becoming a building site (wind farm?). | MikeM | 27/02/2015 |
From picnic area, followed forest tracks and then yomb. | rhalstead | 19/05/2014 |
picnic area, followed trail of litter toward wind turbines, unsure if got highest point. | dicky | 08/06/2013 |
Start ~ Car park at 923019 | steve hudson | 18/02/2013 |
Car park to NW. Then forestry road to 350m of top. Easy fire breaks to top. Alternative top could possibly be higher. | destaylor | 31/01/2013 |
This was a right slog, also took in Hirwaun Common from the Picnic Site. Lots of snow underfoot along the forest rides. Glad I had GPS to locate the high point. However the paper map was invaluable to navigate through the forest. Some of the forest tracks were flooded as well as having lots of discarded Strongbow Cans. | isabelle | 05/11/2012 |
After triangulation point I reached what I think was the high point. Could be a burial mound? | Dusty | 22/04/2009 |
been to this one twice to visit both the summits the spot height is in the coniferous forest | hodder | 13/05/2008 |
new Purchase summit is a fairly distinctive uplift in tussocky ride, complex to reach as not mapped on 25k Nov03. e.g. park 931002, climb steep slope S of crag to forest road, pick a ride E and pick a way to top | RHW | 09/11/2003 |
