An icy Monday morning in Derbyshire. From the car park at Fairholmes, set off north along the eastern banks of the Derwent Reservoir. After crossing into South Yorkshire, a right turn and a steep ascent up a footpath to begin the climb. The snow became so thick I struggled to reach the summit ridge without crampons. No views (<15m visibility) but found the summit cairn and scarpered back down.hillbagger9104/12/2023

Climbed as part of a circluar hike. Starting from Fairholmes Car Park at Ladybower I climbed Upper Hey (446m), Margery Hill (546m), Howden Edge (High Stones) (550m) and Back Tor (538m). A 16mile loop with 2110ft of ascent.dazedemon31/12/2022
Parked at the car park on the A616 north of Langsett, followed the bridleway SW to the watershed. Dropped down slightly to the Derwent valley and then followed the RoW (a delightful small green track) south until, forking off to Upper Hey, then east on another green trod up the steep escarpment to the summit of Howden Edge at High Stones (my penultimate English Dewey). Then north along the summit ridge with a revisit to Margery Hill, before retracing the outward route to the start. A splendid crystal clear winter's day, with frost underfoot and stunning views all round. 18.5km with 570m ascent taking 5h 30m.silveracorn_alan07/12/2022

From Langsett car park along Langsett Bank, over Hingcliff Common, along Mickleden Edge, Cut Gate to Margery Hill. Onto High Stones then down pasted Nether Hey to Derwent Reservoir to finish at Fairholmes car park. With Keith using two cars parked at either end of the walk. Great day on the moors taking advantage of the prolonged dry spell. Second time on this route last was when I was 16 now 73.Glenelg01/09/2022
P at road end. Slippery Stones Margery Hill trig and summit. Warm, windy high up with some refreshing rain.chrisbien12/07/2022
Did High Stones with my cousin which was the longest county top walk in England at 14.2 Miles long. We got there at 11:00 due to terrible traffic in Oldham, and the snake Pass being closed due to maintenance work. This county top certainly didn't want us to complete it, but we did at the cost of taking 9 hours and 30 minutes! The 2 dams were cool to see being built in the 19th century and still standing to this day of course. Also, some views on the day of Sheffield.DavidHiner29/06/2022
From end of Derwent Reservoir. Horse Stone Naze, then along high ground to Howden Edge. Dropped down over Upper Hey back to Slippery Stones and track to car. With B, B and R.jenx19/01/2022
From head of the lochs, Howden water. Walked to Slippery Stones bridge and on up the Derwent valley. Quick stop in delightful Stainery Clough before cutting up to magnificent Horse Stone (Naze) top. Onwards to Hoar Stones-Howden Edge county top before long March around dodgy ground to two trigs (Margery Hill and Outer Edge) then High Stones on HE. Dropped steeply off to collect Upper Hey, before pleasant steeps back to the bridge the parked car.nordicstar19/01/2022

On own. A lovely sunny day with great views. From King’s Tree car park (Howden Reservoir). Along forest road to stone footbridge at Slippery Stones then up bridleway to Cut Gate End with three large cairns as top approached. Then to Margery Hill tp and along footpath to small cairn at Howden Edge (High Stones). Return same route except kept along ridge to bypass Margery Hill tp. Great walk.Beeliner27/08/2019

Beautiful walk up from Fairholmes. Forests in autumn colours, sun shining, no wind, but cool at the top. Excellent picnic spot on the boulders at the summit!jkl20/10/2018

From the N end of Ladybower. Up to Margery Hill and along the Edge. Took advantage of a break in the weather. With Alan.Campbell Singer04/01/2018
Ladybower, Back Tor, Howden Edge, Upper Hey. Good paved pathnorth from Back Tor but then pick your best route from 93 grid line north east to Feathered Moss over pathless short grass humps and ankle high heather. Not bad as pathless moorland goes.ijpowell29/09/2017
From parking on A616. BW to Margery Hill, High Stones, Upper Hey, Outer Edge, Hoar Stones, Horse Stone Naze and back via Outer Edge.PeterD04/09/2017
Path from Back Tor was difficult to find and dog (Jack Russel) struggled in deep heather so had to carry. As a result lost my compass then continued to Outer Edge!!John Eley13/08/2017
Parked at Fairholme. Crossed under the reservoir wall to track running up E side of Ladybower. Walked up to SK17102 92172. Just short of Howden Reservoir. Good track on R. Followed this (steep)to Nether Hey. Gradually flattening out as got higher. Continued on track to Row Top (steep at first) then on to High Stones. Reversed path to SK18857 93821. Turned right and followed a track onto Featherbed Moss. Followed track, vague in places to shooting butts, then turned SEish. No real path. Continued to good path running down from Back Tor (Cartledge Edge). Turned R and followed the path (lots of mill floor stones) to Back Tor. At meeting of three good paths turned left to Lost Lad. Continued on path, starting to drop down now over Green Stitches to Hancock Wood. Down to track. Turned L and back to Fairholme. Good walk . Ground reasonably dry considering the amount of rain in last two or three weeks. Rained most of the day.MikeM28/07/2017
Had a great time getting to the top of Howden edge. No clear path to follow once you enter the national trust section but we had fun getting through the peat bog and heathers, still we made it up and back down :)DJA22/07/2017
County top walk from fairholmes car park it's a eight mile walk to get to and from the top, follow the path down the right side of the reservoirs till a path on the left takes you into the moorland crossing a small stream the path turns right then left to reach a round stone structure from here follow the line of grouse butts to the summit.WAYNE ROWLETT28/05/2017
