As others, from minor road to S; parked on verge to left of metal barrier on bend - Along grass verge to wood, through nettles on edge of wood & then had a wander around visiting a few possible high points. | gerrybowes | 09/07/2023 |
Parked to the South in wide side road. NZ390252. Road easily walkable with a bit of care and wood not too brambly this time of year. | David Evans | 17/02/2023 |
On own. Parked on minor road to S then dangerous walk along road with very fast traffic for company to small area of woodland. HP just in woods close to road. | Beeliner | 18/10/2022 |
Drove up after drive from Manchester to deliver some equipment to a storehouse in Stockton | GordonAdshead | 17/11/2021 |
Fast walk along busy road from junction to south. Looked impenetrable but Bag For Life spotted an easy way through, about 20m south of summit mound. | Wycombe Wanderer | 28/08/2021 |
Easy parking at road junction to south. Road very busy with speeding traffic but enough of a verge to stand on as they approach, walking inbetween approaching vehicles. High-viz vest advisable. A short distance before the end of the trees to the west the verge widens slightly. Cross over and there is an obvious vegetation-covered mound about 20m into the trees. This appears to be the highest point. | moorsman | 05/09/2020 |
Thorpe Larches from GR: NZ 39001 25809. Driven this road many times in my younger days. This is the nearest recognised hill to where I grew up in Norton. | ronaldo333 | 16/06/2020 |
Parked south, near junc with minor road. Dusk so walked along field margin on W side road. Thrashed around in bramble and nettle in the copse; couple of mounds found, hard to say if either are the HP. | jonglew | 06/09/2019 |
Parked to the south in Grindon Lane. Road not too bad on a Sunday afternoon, but traffic is very fast. Reasonable verge for most of the way. Agree about highpoint being ivy-covered bank (also with a few nettles!). | PGCE | 21/07/2019 |
Went to point listed. There is an ivy-covered bank about 20m into the woods which is almost definitely higher at 39051 25697. May be man-made but so is the road. | clivevilla | 10/09/2018 |
Road not too busy on a Sunday morning. With Danu. | Dangerous Dave | 29/07/2018 |
Parked in a widening at the first of the Stillington Road, and walked with great trepidation to the ivy bank summit. Near the road junction south of the summit, a bus stop with no provision for passengers to wait, or indication that anyone has ever done so, and a notice saying that buses don't stop here, symbolised the antipathy of the A177 to walkers. | Nick Down1 | 08/03/2018 |
A pause while passing in light post-festive traffic. | mrs_ts7 | 27/12/2017 |
Parked to the north next to the roadside houses. Dangerous 300 mts walk along the grass verge in the dark along a very busy main road. Returning from Bass Rock trip. | Campbell Singer | 19/12/2017 |
road side verge. Very busy road. | PeterD | 09/04/2017 |
On way to see the Rams play at Newcastle. Lost courtesy of a dodgy deflected goal | Mark Sims | 04/02/2017 |
This has to be, potentially, the most dangerous summit in the UK. No footpath. Fast vehicles. Solo. | bolton | 12/08/2016 |

Rubbish peak in an unappealing location. Pleasant afternoon drive and ramble | mcbiydw2 | 24/12/2013 |
Too busy to stop, a drive-past !! | Moorponder | 17/08/2013 |
This is indeed a busy road! Parked in side lane about 400m to SE, took life in hands walking along grass verge to highest point. This appeared to be an ivy covered banking on SW of road, at side of wood. | Aye Jimmy | 21/03/2013 |
Parked to the south whilst waiting for Mrs madaddo to run Castle Eden. Walked up the very busy road - not nice!!! | madaddo | 10/03/2013 |
Park at Thorpe Larches. Walk to verge high point, other areas in fields appear as high. Uninspiring!! | nordicstar | 11/12/2012 |
Drove past, road too busy to consider getting out. Could have walked up from Grindon church ruin. | Nick | 22/06/2011 |
Driven by many many times. Doesn't warrant stopping especially with the amount of cars that manage to end up in the trees on this bend. | TomL | 01/06/2010 |
Did not bother stopping, just drove past as I knew
I was doing Boy Hill later in the day. | asbown | 14/03/2009 |
A miserable spot on busy main road. I diced with death and walked up from the south having parked near the stables on a side road to the west. | Father Ted | 09/10/2006 |
There is a pull in just north of the bend and you can walk back to the corner and highest point but it's a VERY busy road. | signyred | 13/08/2006 |
Tried twice to find a place to stop but couldn't due to busy traffic. Decided a drive-by would do as this top is so poor. GPS as we drove across showed a metre lower than Boy Hill anyway. | wheresthepath | 08/07/2006 |
Driven passed a few times while working in area. | Dugswell2 | 01/10/2002 |
Local, driven by many times. Added to random date. | PreCambrianLife | 01/01/1990 |
