From the layby with the stunning view S along Whiteness Voe over Wormadale -with its recent development of modern eco houses (only 15 mins from Lerwick) and the unusual older dozen colourful triangular chalets. The eye is drawn to the sturdy old fishing hut on the peninsula tip at Nesbister - now a basic bod where for £12 night hardy visitors can stay -sleeps 4, no electricity & toilet is a bucket and bury type! I detoured to the tall slanting standing stone from C2 BC. Experts can only guess as to its importance - marking the seasons perhaps - but it must have been significant as its made of granite so was brought here - placed in a dug pit with packing stones to keep it upright. The Westings Hotel near the layby is , despite the stunning views, now closed permanently. Previously in the one online review a grumpy customer complained that the night he arrived the world cup final was on tv in the bar and it was a 'bit lively' - and he hated football.Chris Pearson14/05/2021
