Cairngorm Club weekend meet based at Glen Brittle Youth Hostel. With three other club members. From Sligachan Hotel using the ‘Tourist Route’ though it was a little tricky in the conditions, snow having to be cleared off holds. Before reaching the SE ridge of Sgùrr nan Gillean we deviated too much to the right until we came to a point where we were on a spur looking across to Pinnacle Ridge. We retraced our steps and were able to reach the SE ridge somewhat above the usual point of access. On the upper part of the ridge we went on to the W flank, climbed a flake (remembered from 1982), and climbed rocks to regain the crest a few metres from the summit. We initially decided to go down the crest of the SE ridge but met a party of about 7 coming up who said it was difficult so we decided to go down the way we had come up. A very well worthwhile day. We had some refreshments at the new bar/coffee house part of the Sligachan Hotel.pwbellarby16/05/1993

Via the west ridge when the gendarme was still there after a storm had wrecked all the tents in the Sligachan campsite except my little phoenix phigher. With Ron on his final Munro. Followed him in crap weather all the way up the tourist route. I then led back down as his body lost all its adrenelin rush. Bill waited in the car! SS14/09/1986
with Colin & Dave up Pinnacle Ridge. Great scrambling - although got more dicey once the rain came on. (yet again). Descent along west ridge -with a couple of frightening moves to get past the gendarme pinnacle (since fallen off!) with big drops on both sides. Colin had put a large sling around it which we clipped into - very poor wet slippery footholds, hugging the gendarme, and a blind swing around to invisible footholds encouraged by Colin the climber.Chris Pearson21/07/1986

With Ron up shelf on left and scrambled last few feet to ridge just before summit (Ron didn't follow). Repeated in 1986 (Ron's final one keeping to the ridge), 1989 (from Am Basteir) and 1991.SS15/06/1985
In London, Lady Di's hat blew off and was front page news in the Daily Mail. Calm and sunny on Skye, perfect for Pete and me- it was his first Munros holiday. We took the Tourist Route to the top and returned the same way. Near the top the easy scrambling was exposed; a more protected way was very tricky. By 1985 I'd just got enough experience to stick to the easy, exposed way. The policeman still guarded the W ridge. An excellent day, except sadly the rescue helicopter around the Cuillin was recovering a body- an accident in the appalling weather we saw from Quirang (where it was OK) yesterday.pwheeler25/05/1985
