my first ascent and munro 272 for me then, caught the bus from outside the mem hut and got left off at the top of glen brittle. followed the path up into fionn a choire, to the top, over the ridge, traversed along the path below the north side of am bastier, then up the east ridge breaking off to turn the bad step below via a corner then scree covered ramp back up to below the step and onto the summit, magic!. returned to the bad step took direct, using a rope left in situ by 2 other climbers. Back round to Fionn choir, then a second ascent of fionn choir the top and a second ascent of bruach na frithe, returning to glen brittle via fionn choir and the path.rum doodle 12/07/2004

We had to keep below the ridge on its S side to avoid the little tooth on the E ridge as a rock fall necessitates an abseil there; looks easy but we didn't take a rope etc. Last Skye Munro for Pete and I, unfortunately done in a rather inelegant way. Continued a fine mountain day with Bruach na Frithe.pwheeler21/05/2001

Solo on a clear day. The usual route up Bruach na Frithe from the Slig with a few scrambly bits. Then worked way around & on to Am Basteir which had quite enough exposure for my liking. Descended carefully & spotted what I thought was an easy-ish scramble on to Sgurr nan Gillean. This proved to be quite a bit harder than it looked from below in a couple of places. I could see the exit to the summit but uncomfortably committed, it took a few deep breaths & some focus to get up it. Bit of 'a cheval' on the descent of the normal route near the top & then down the path to the Slig.NotReallyABagger01/05/1995

With a friend. From Sligachan we followed the path going to Coire a’ Bhasteir. This includes some easy scrambling across slabs on the west side. We reached Bealach nan Lice. I scrambled up to Sgùrr a’ Fionn Choire initially for reasons of prospecting the route ahead. We descended to the start of Collie’s Route to Basteir Tooth. We roped up and climbed up a little way. Not feeling on form, being rather tired, climbed down and left it for another day. We went back to Bealach nan Lice. We went round the N side of Am Basteir and up to the summit. We returned to Sligachan via Coire a’ Bhàsteir for a bar supper at Sligachan.pwbellarby05/09/1993

from S a F C. Long gentle clamber down for 500' under the Tooth and face of Basteir then a severe 500' clamber up on scree to bealach for lunch. Up on ridge to top of 10' rock step down. Very windy. That night mountain rescue came into the Sligachan pub asking for volunteers to assist evacuate someone who had been blown off the tooth. Luckily they had fallen into a snow drift and only broken their leg. 3rd consecutive day of rain and cloud on the ridge. A fun scramble up Bhastair Gorge then the 4 of us (Uni friends -having just finished final exams) were shown how to move together roped up under the 'expert' guidance of one of our number who had marginally more knowledge than the combined zero of the rest of us.The rope soon became a nuisance and a tripping hazard and when we got to the Bad Step, as last one down I soon twigged that I had no protection except for the dubious value of a 'body belay' from below to stop me falling off the side of the mountain should I fall off in the wet. After summiting and reclimbing the bad step (with our expert going first and putting in a runner - which looked very professional) we decided to unrope for safety !! Shades of The Ascent of Rum Doodle come to mind?Chris Pearson24/06/1984
