Cochno car park to Jaw reservoir, across the land bridge to the fishing hut then having missed a turn to Birny hills off to Craigmore using forestry track. Back to Birny hill using the tracks. Down to Kilmannan reservoir for lunch and off to Craighirst. Some poor direction decisions and some 'off piste' walking before up to Cochno and back to the car park. | Buck | 04/01/2024 |
After Craigmoore Hill. A bit of a forestry thrash. | colazione | 03/08/2023 |
From Black Loch, rather harder than last time due to new windthrow | Colin Crawford | 12/07/2023 |
Note that the firebreak mentioned, off the spur, now has much windthrow. It is now easier to follow the forest road either from the Cochno side or the A809 at St Mocha to the junction at the quarry to the NW. Take the S track going to the west of the hill S-wards until level with roughly where the summit is. You can see where there is a broad (unmarked) firebreak, which can be entered through the point at which the trees space out a bit. Once in the break, there's a faint path. Easiest to head E until easy to get up the small scarp and follow the edge of that til just N of the summit - which you can then find in the trees. It is just inside these & no more. Return the same way - this avoids almost all the forest bashing. The detail is clearer on the satellite view. | Belfarm | 18/10/2022 |
From the Cochno car park, past Muirhouses, then track to east of Black Loch and onto new forest road. From the crest of road headed south through trees to steep bank up to top. Back on road to Craigmore Hill. | PeterD | 13/05/2022 |
A bonus ball on the way to Blackcraig. The new road passes east of the hill and near the high point on the shoulder there is a short spur. Just south of this is a ride which brings you out below a steep step just below the summit. May take a lot longer in the blaeberry season | fasgadh | 21/06/2021 |
Through the trees from Black Loch, mature growth now allows this without too much thrashing | Colin Crawford | 05/03/2021 |
Came from the north. Required quite a bit of thrashing and climbing to progress up the hill but the views when I got there were beautiful. | JAdair97 | 01/03/2021 |
From Cochno CP to Cochno Hill, Craighirst, Birny Hills and Craigmore. 3rd time on Cochno but others don't merit repeat visits. Should have read helpful reports first. Satisfying workout but ruined jacket in forests. | lordtonult | 15/12/2020 |
Hard to find in the forest! | Grinner | 29/11/2020 |
From Craigmore on forest road to high point of track then up through firebreak. On th Craighirst. | sclater | 20/08/2020 |
A lot easier now with much forest having cleared. Up the track from Concho Farm, then along the track on the south side of the Jaw Resevoir to the join with Concho Loch. Traverse the spit of land between the 2 lochs to the hut at the other end of the spit and continue along the path on the east shore of Concho Loch. Up the tracks at the NE end of the Loch, until you reach the wide forestry track. Thereafter follow a wall NE up the slope to a stile, over the stile up a bit more before turning SE along tracks to the summit. (Good tracks also exist up to the summit from the east end of Jaw Resevoir, heading north first then NW to the summit). | clanbonham | 14/06/2020 |
Similar route to Minto, nice views before getting lost in trees. GPS essential to find real top/ | iangalbraith | 19/01/2020 |
After Craighirst. A few sheep tracks to the boundary wall and in and up from the south up the ride shown on Google earth. Unfortunately Google earth doesn't show the great big forestry road constructed running NS and getting within 200m of the summit, then hard work round Jaw resr to dam and back down to Hardgate and home using a No2 bus. | Thearlaichdubh | 26/01/2018 |
round of craigmore hill, birny hills, craighirst, cochno hill ACW from cochno cp. | robertphillips | 08/07/2017 |
Round of 5 from Cochno Car Park. From Craigmore Hill, round craggy knoll to SW of Black Loch. Aerial photo printout more useful than map. Enter forest due S of summit, follow clearings clockwise to due N of summit, from where it is easily found. Onwards to Craighurst hill, descending W to a felled area, S then W again across streams and wall. | Minto | 03/07/2017 |
From Cochno CP via Jaw pipe track & Craigmore Hill. Having ignored the advice below I can confirm it is sound: don't hit the trees too early at the final approach, circle to immediately north of HP. | agentmancuso | 01/04/2017 |
Coming from Craighirst missed the path to Black Loch (somewhat hidden by windthrow) and struggled up from clearing to clearing. Found recommended route on way down as described. | neimcv | 09/03/2017 |
From Cochno CP via road to WM, S of Black Loch then series of clearings to just N of summit. Strong cold wind with lying snow above 300m. | chrisbien | 13/02/2017 |
From S (Cochno car park NS 5031 7400) via Craigmore Hill, passed N of Black Loch, up thru easy open spruce, HP just S of ride/break. Then followed open breaks SW, then west to Craighirst. | RHW | 13/12/2015 |
drove right up to west Muirhouses farm house at the top of the road, as local knowledge had told me that Richie and Isla were happy to let people park there for payment of a pound to then go off up the hill. Info was correct except that Isla now insists on payment of £3 !! No amount of light hearted bargaining that it was already 17.30 and I only had the evening so couldn't it be a bit cheaper, cut any ice with Isla. Sorry, its the same £3 for a day of a part of a day. I'm a hard woman!!
Up track skirting eastern edge of loch under west side of steep little subsidiary hill and into the trees and up ride that runs NE just inside the forest running parallel to another little loch. Eventally had to branch up and push up NW through the forest, where I eventually surprisingly came out into another wide non forested strip not maked on my online 1.25k map running roughly east west on the north side of the hill and the highest point was just into the woods here. I cleared moss and pine nee | vegibagger | 26/05/2015 |
I agree with the previous visitor - the firebreak to the north is the easiest approach. I made several sorties into the close grown trees from the break and can only hope that one of them hit lucky | Colin Crawford | 10/09/2014 |
Probably best visited by arcing around break to west and slightly to the north of the summit. I did much more tree bashing than necessary by leaving it too early. Some spring snow. | campagvelocet | 27/03/2013 |
