On round of Tumps around Afton reservoir | Andrew Simmons | 30/10/2023 |
Parked in Glen Afton near the start of the windfarm track. Circuit of 10 summits. 10/10. Easy return downhill to car. | PGCE | 13/10/2023 |
Finished off with this one after a round of the Grahams/Donald's around Afton Reservoir. Followed dyke to high point where there was a an opening beside a fence post lying against the dyke. Straight in front of this managed to quite easily push through the first line of defence trees in the wood and after that there was enough room to move freely between the trees for about 30 metres to find the top which was marked with a small pile of stones atop a small grassy knoll in a small clearing. Not as bad as I had expected to try and reach. Descended through fields and across a few gates/fences crossing the Wind Farm access road to get to the main road just beside the car parking area south of Craigdarroch. | Jossker | 14/05/2022 |
Roadside verge parking 450m back from Craigdarroch (NS 6324 0694). Took WF road for ~1300m then peeled off SW for Struther's Brae, across to Milray then Auchincally Hills on good breaks. From there headed SSE for 500m on a wide break to turn ENE on a narrower break (at NS 6036 0619) after which copious windthrow across the breaks and at time extending well into the plantaion on both sides was encountered. All was negotiable but slowed me down a lot. Once the Glenshalloch Burn was crossed at NS 6094 0626 the going was much better to the forest edge. A surprisingly easy 12.5k round of Nith and Dee Catchment hills. | jonglew | 11/01/2022 |
From Struthers Brae on Glen Afton round that started with ascent of Blackcraig hill. Small cairn at HP in forest was accessed from gap in wall | PeterD | 12/10/2021 |
Approx 40km round from Glen Afton, starting near Craigdarroch. Direct ascent to Yarngallows Knowe, then Struther's Brae, Black Hill (also visiting tops similar in height to the summit), Black Hill, Wedder Hill, Millaneoch Hill, Keoch Rigg, Moorbrock Hill N Top, Moorbrock Hill, Dodd Hill (+ nearby mounds of similar height), Mid Hill of Glenhhead, camped near summit off Alhang. Continued short distance to Alhang summit, then Ewe Hill N Top, Ewe Hill, Alwhat, Meikledodd Hill, Blacklorg Hill, Cannock Hill and Craigbraneoch Hill, descending to cross bridge at Craigdarroch. Rain for much of route, and wet underfoot. | RobertP | 22/08/2020 |
1st of 12 tops on a 33km round in mainly wet conditions. Parked up in a hardstanding area near cottages down from the water station then up via field edge and up over track to high ground outside forest then over fence to push through trees to reach cairn, recording 476m @ NS 62587 06727, continuing along field edge to Struthers Brae although also visited spot height inside trees, which was a wasted effort really as it is part of the Struthers Brae terrain.. | Dazingdale | 22/09/2019 |
Round of Craigbranreoch, Cannock, Black Hill, Struther's Brae and Yarngallows Knowe. Pleasant that highpoint was only 30m inside trees and sufficient clearing to get GPS reading. Diagonally down to waterworks CP mainly on 4wd track. Lovely circuit apart from the windfarm. | Thearlaichdubh | 12/04/2019 |
as chris and agent track then straight up. | robertphillips | 05/10/2018 |
From winfarm across tussocky terain. Summit is in small clearing 20 m into trees. Descent back to waterworks. On faint quad track | cjo | 29/10/2017 |
Directly up from the road (wind farm car park) along telegraph poles, then easy and gentle broad ridge. There's no avoiding the final tussle with the trees | Colin Crawford | 05/05/2017 |
From Struther's Brae. Part of an 11 summit clockwise circuit of Glen Afton. Hardest summit of the day - in the trees. Obvious knoll in clearing. Enter trees about 20 m of two tall upright posts, or 20m left of corner post. Summit is only about 20-30 in the wood. Continued along ridge to broad col before Boltcraig Crag, then NW down steep slope, and followed power lines straight down the hill to the road. There are no trees to fight through. Wouldn't recommend it as a way up - except to chrisbien, but he's already been up here. | Minto | 05/06/2016 |
As per agent | chrisbien | 14/05/2016 |
From track junc to East, followed track for a few hundred yards then straight up. Summit not far into trees. | agentmancuso | 26/09/2015 |
