A well used trod deviates to the summit which is away from the straight col to col watershed line. This trod formed by diligent runners on 16 mile Pentland Skyline Race. Threipmuir Reservoir to the NW has been skilfully designed by James Jardin in 1840s to not only supply water to Edinburgh from its NE side, but there is a connecting open drain / ditch which carries surplus water by gravity alone downhill counterintuitively across the watershed through the flat col to the E to feed Glencorse Reservoir. This must only happen when the reservoir fills up and with the dam being higher than the col the water overspills through to Glencorse. Glencorse was Jardine's first Pentland reservoir masterpiece, requiring a huge earth dam that caused all sorts of problems -and a through the mountain tunnel / pipe to take the water to Edinburgh. All overseen by Thomas Telford.Chris Pearson14/07/2020

Castlelaw, Capelaw, Harbour and Bells from Castlelaw car park. Descended E to Kirk Bridge path, back along road then short climb on path to car park. My final Midlothian tump, on a fine chilly breezy afternoonRHW11/12/2016
Great 10.7 mile walk from Castlelaw car park, walked up good lane then steep path up to Castlelaw Hill, along lanes to Allermuir Hill with a great view of Edinburgh, out-and-back to Caerketton Hill, then along ridge to Capelaw Hill, followed good trails to Harbour Hill then onto Bell's Hill, then one final long pull up onto Black Hill (where weather turned from sunny to rain), then along main lane from summit down to farmland (weather improving), joined surfaced road along Glencorse Reservoir I had previously walked in 2015 after doing Scald Law ridge, then up path not marked on map along rifle range boundary back to Castlelaw car park.DanTrig11/10/2016
