5/8 NatureScot description: 'Craggy Upland -upland moor with irregular, rather amorphous landform. Rounded knolls, rock outcrops and numerous lochs caught in (glacier) rounded hollows. Open moorland predominates, but extensive conifer plantations camouflage the landscape pattern in some areas. Oak-birch woodland on lower slopes.
The landscape has, in the main, a wild, natural character. Most of the area is inaccessible by car or on foot (?!) owing to the steep and rugged landform. The underlying Dalradian rocks are impermeable metamorphic schist'. This all makes for heavy going with large areas of pathless swampy tussocks, with some half hearted messy deer tracks. Ruder description are available. Pleasing to know Prof Sir Chris Whitty would approve the effort required as he has reported today that being physically active, improves health outcomes and increases the proportion of life spent in good health'. Just had to survive this walk to reap the health benefits. Lovely clear day. | Chris Pearson | 10/11/2023 |
Followed the private road from the Ballimore entrance CP, detouring along an ATV track to Cnoc Lomain, over a field gate to its North Top, through a sheep fank and up a sheep trod to Barr a' Ghlaoigh Mor, then another ATV route up to Creag Thulach. Approached Meall an Fhithich from the SE, initially following a fence line up to Lochan na Cuaig. A meandering route over to Creag an Aonaich then SW to pick up a faint track through the adjacent forestry. A reasonably wide break aids access to Cnoc Lochan a' Bhealaich then its back to the minor track, which becomes a proper stone track further west, until SE of Cnoc Lochan a' Bhealaich. I followed a fence line then demolished wall until S of summit then up through first long grass then conifer crawl to the summit. The final hill of the day was the much more straightforward Cnoc Dubh Loch, although a deer fence clamber was still required before reaching grazed grass. Returned to car along the B845, getting on to it from Barachander Farm. Lov | summitter | 30/10/2023 |
Followed bolton's route from the walkers' CP at Ballimore estate gates. Tried a more direct return, but floundered in giant bracken after following a firebreak to the wall and fence leading SW of Am Maol top the detour route. | Nick Down1 | 21/07/2023 |
Had a chat with friendly Ballimore farmer at 041244 parking area. Shoulder high bracken at times after deer gate. Up from 06163/25950, went left before trees, got to old track at 05931/26095. Left it soon after it turned right. Over some undulations to join path for last 200-300 yds. On descent went down more direct from old track to join lower track at 06053/25930. | duchally | 22/06/2023 |
Ascended along Ballimore track: parked just to the north at 038245, should have used the CP on the track itself just as the tarmac ends at 050244. Used the nornal bypass route, track beyond 068257 very overgrown with bracken. Headed uphill at 072260, found very indistinct path through deep tussock. Views of Cruachan and Loch Awe made it worthwhile | Clive G | 09/08/2021 |
From road junction with Ballimore track up Cnoc Lomain, its North Top, Barr a Ghlaoigh Mor, Meall an Fhithich via fire breaks, Creag Thulach via more fire breaks and out to its trig. | sclater | 21/02/2021 |
Good parking spot provided at 040243. Followed the re-route but head upwards before gate after sheep fanks. Through gate and ENE until about 062260 and then head directly up on indistinct track. Great views. Solo. | bolton | 27/09/2020 |
6th tump of 12 on a traverse from Taynuilt to the Taychreggan hotel, climbing Cnoc Ichrachan, Tom nan Aighean, Creag Bhainneach, Cnoc Lochan a' Bhealaich and Creag an Aonaich, followed by a lovely ridge walk stopping for lunch on an outcrop next to two large boulders continuing via series of higher knolls to reach the obvious top (a relief after all the forest shenanigans). Headed Sse then around the forest heading for Creag Thulach.. | Dazingdale | 05/05/2019 |
From car park at track end... highland cows...helpful farmer pointing out track and away from house and change to right of way (nimby), deer stalkers. otherwise uneventful | N.Morters | 16/02/2019 |
Via Ballimore private road. Partly hidden behind 12 frisky long horned highland cows was a green sign at NN 051254 inviting walkers to turn R (ENE) before reaching the house, 'walkers to avoid highland cattle uphill at end (via sheep fank)'. The un-mapped 4x4 track passes to the S of hillock Barr a Ghlaoigh Mor at NN 055255 and reaches an un-hung 2m high gate (hazard of being crushed) - an ATV turns uphill just before this gate and, after easily crossing an old low fence a similar gate is met with an adjacent 'gravity' gate. Don't take the ATV track going uphill, L, it soon reaches a high point and you'll end up going over very rough ground 'over the tops' - better to go along the level-ish green track of the mapped FP and then turn uphill, where you might find the very thin trod that leads to the summit. | Isbjorn | 12/02/2019 |

As others took Ballimore track to NN062260 where a fairly clear hillside gave access to the summit area. | Chris Peart | 11/08/2018 |
En-route from Oban to Penrith; parking at walkers' car park (NN 0405 2438). Picked up the 3 tumps along the way, starting the attack on the Marilyn at the deer gate (NN 0559 2577). Took the track to NN 0598 2590 whence straight up the side of the conifer plantation through above head-high bracken - a bit scrambly once the crag was met; then direct to the HP over rough tussocky ground. On the return dropped down to the track further E (at NN 0622 2600) to avoid the crag, a bit of weaving through bracken and conifers necessary, but it worked ok. | jonglew | 25/07/2018 |
From CP which is a few hundred meters along farm track from B845. Path disappeared in bracken for a while. From approx 062 260, I left path & made my way up, drifting left, where trees & bracken could be avoided & then over a few hillocks to the summit. Amazing views of Ben Cruachan.
The obvious start point is the Awe Barrage, giving possibly the more aesthetic way to the summit (fence & gate at barrage would be a problem, but the killer is cctv).
Hot day, but clusters of clegs was the main problem - bites on bites - relentless - agony! | ger | 29/06/2018 |
Glorious... My final Marilyn west of Loch Awe and North of Kintyre just feel like lying in the sun in the light breeze. | vegibagger | 23/05/2018 |

Gales, rain, hail, thunderstorms...so the perfect hill for a sh-1-te December day. Via Ballimore past the lovely Loch Tromlee. A very bizarre stile at the initial gates, then a walkers path diverts round the house to a padlocked gate held up with string, and a demolished stile. Wooden section of deer fence allows access to the rest of the walk. Thrash through bogs up to a grassy track, then an easy climb east of Am Maol joins a short, abandoned vehicle track. Boggy ground over a bump to an even boggier col, then there's a surprisingly good animal/people track to the top. Great views of Loch Awe and Beinn Cruachan. Back via the house. If they can't be bothered with the access legislation, neither could we. Best to bag this one soon before the new trees and new forestry make access more complicated. | Gill | 24/12/2016 |
Usual route avoiding Ballimore farm, with mora. area around lochan na cuaig is difficult better to go direct for the top from track at nn 063 260. | BLACKHILL | 27/10/2016 |
From Ballimore track, carp park provided for walkers at start. Hot, sunny, calm and great views. | iangalbraith | 18/06/2016 |
After Creag Thulach. Through gate at NN 066261 and up north-east side of fence to Lochan na Cuaig, now fenced off but with some stiles. Round east end of lochan to gate, then westwards to summit. Grandstand view of the sunlit south side of Cruachan, and the top of Beinn Ìme visible in the distance. Down to east of Lochan a’ Chraithraich and to deer fence at NN 056272, making for Creag an Aonaich. | mainnirnamfiadh | 25/05/2016 |
Nice first hill of the year accompanied by a charmingly mad Springer Spaniel called Cally.Took us longer than I expected. | jenx | 03/01/2016 |
With Jenx. Circuit from around the datm, borrowing the owners springer spaniel! Good track to east thru two deer fence gates, steeply up crossing fence to gain summit. Rough tussocky ground. Good views. Direct back towards farm, young conifers thickening and will be a problem in a few years. Back over fence to farm and start point | nordicstar | 03/01/2016 |
B845 track to ballimore | robertphillips | 09/08/2015 |
From B845 via Ballimore. Track to sign directing hillwalkers right of the house, then circular route. Followed directions to right of house, over a stile, through a gate into deer fenced forestry, then followed the path for long enough to allow a not-too-steep ascent. Return via gate at 05208 26469. | Topographer57 | 14/05/2015 |
Climbed from B845. There are walkers welcome signs at start of track to Ballimore. When house comes into view turn right at cattle grid and follow fence to stile to avoid house and wet area. | Lionel Bidwell | 21/03/2012 |

From Ballimore Farm. Past loch to skirt house and policies. Tussock grass trod to rolling tummocks. To top at 11.00. Rain. | arranc | 11/09/2004 |
From Loch Tromlee. Spotted a 'Ring-Tailed' Hen Harrier. Didn't realise I could identify such. | Eddie | 12/11/2003 |
