6 mile run loop from Maen Llwyd pub .. up the tarmac track then left at stile at ST207871 … there is another stile at ST205872 that takes you into field .. only needs a slight deviation from RoW to reach water tank … be warned you will be spotted by the farm dogs … there are some cracking tracks in this area so take time to explore .. Mynydd y Bwlch is just the other side of the trees if you are addicted to Summit Bag app like I am | milejunkie | 13/03/2023 |
Drove down a very single track lane from pub. Parked at mine entrance by private gate to farm. Walked the last 300 m. The summit by water tank by a veryvstrange aerial | cjo | 05/06/2022 |
HP probably by water tank on partly wooded ridgelet, if not, by adjacent aerial with unusual electronics on top. Two noisy and lively dogs deterred us from using the RoW through the farmyard to the East! Foggy. | Denise | 08/11/2021 |
From the S taking driveway to farm where we are greeted by friendly bounding dogs but no owner. High point is in field W of farm at base of water tank. Also an unusual aerial. | RichardM | 08/11/2021 |
Parked at bend in road SW of Draethen for a circuit of Craig Ruperra and Penhow. Final track to Penhow farm signed 'Private' so used ROW to the W, and then NE beside wood. | PGCE | 03/08/2021 |
Run up through Coed Cefn-pwll-du, steep mountain bike track. | TedCymru | 01/04/2021 |
Parked in the lane opposite the pub at 20182 86607 as it was Saturday lunch time and the pub was busy. Up the track to the farm. I shut the gate and a young dog leapt up at me without me realising she was there. All very friendly but a surprise. The farmer came out but was OK. He had been working in S.Sudan! | clivevilla | 29/08/2020 |
10.45..Fairly close to farm and track | vegibagger | 22/07/2019 |
Trip up with Sam for a bit of adventure. Good views into an old quarry on the way up. | castleviewblue | 13/06/2019 |
2/2 after work, parked at picnic area, walked through forest, up road past Dan y Graig and followed footpath to top. | penbet | 10/06/2019 |
From Mynydd Rudry south on zigzagging footpaths out on to Van Road at the car park, following Van Road east to the Maenllwyd Inn, then turning left and heading northeast to the end of the track, and left again up through the field towards Penhow Farm, then over the gate into the summit field and a short walk west to the transmitter | Mariana Trench | 09/09/2018 |
From the pub car park via Dan y Graig and FPS. | Campbell Singer | 15/08/2018 |
As part of a long run from Cardiff to Risca. | kasharic | 11/03/2018 |
both summits done. | Adrian | 03/01/2018 |
Up from the car park to the south on a windy route through the woods then across field to the noisy dogs etc. | Father Ted | 11/03/2017 |
From disused quarry entrance at bend in road (ST 2126 8688). Dogs went mad as approaching farm so called at house, permission readily given, but was told HP is 250m SW! Did the accepted top by mast, then wandered across to the farmers HP to find it was lower. | jonglew | 15/12/2016 |
From car park to the south, initially along forest track then ROW.
Farmer tending bonfire gave permission to go to summit which is not on FP. | PeterD | 18/09/2016 |
Circular walk from Draethen taking in Craig Ruperra & Penhow. Track to Penhow Farm then through gate to summit. | Tony J | 13/06/2015 |
Caerphilly circular (5/7). From E although friendly (not the dogs)tenant of the farmhouse advised that ROW through the yard had been diverted. Happy to show me the view of the Millennium Stadium, Flat Holm & Steep Holm from the top. | Smudge | 05/03/2015 |
From SE, parked by quarry entrance. Blockwork structure at summit, also comms mast with what looks like a giant version of a Leica GPS base station. Did Ruperra from same parking spot. | RHW | 31/01/2015 |
