Logged Descriptions  (logged by 34 users)ByDate of Ascent
Unmarked in heather at cliff edge track with pleasant views. Large areas of windfelled trees following Storm Arwen Nov 21 still being cleared and obstructing many mapped tracks. Longer and further than expected. We accessed from NE- not recommended currently. Access on mapped paths from Northern edge of forest via Castle Hill to N is OK, albeit steep and overgrown on final ascent.McCartney's cave is fun.Denise 06/02/2024
Our intention was to follow the mapped track SW along the top of the edge but this was thwarted by fallen trees and forest operations to clear the devastation caused by Storm Arwen. We eventually make it but would have been easier to approach from the W. Much of Thrunton Woods are currently closed to the public while forest operations are being carried out. Levelish summit, high point unmarked in heather / bilberry / cowberry on N side of the sandy track surprisingly wild looking views to the SW. Large block of rock on bank to W very similar height.RichardM06/02/2024
Castle hill and callaly crag visited 3 areas, the west top, the summit, and the clearfelled area to the ESE from the minor road.robertphillips19/02/2023
Started and ended at the Thrunton Forest England carpark, which was packed with mountain bikers by 10am. Forestry tracks to the Coe Burn then over a footbridge and up a narrow muddy path to Coe Crag and on to Long Crag. Continued on the main track westwards then back down to the Coe Valley and up the footpath to Hard Nab and its wonderful wind shelter, passing a herd of wild ponies half-way along. Callaly Crag next amongst a twitter of finches then across Thrunton Crag to the beech-topped Castle Hill. Forestry track East and NE-wards below Thrunton Crag to near its exit, taking a red-marked path just before a car lay-by back to the main car park. 3.45hrs.summitter07/11/2021
Assuming you are approaching this from Castle Hill then a good path leads south down into the valley. Here it continues steeply, but easily, up to the summit ridge of Callaly Crag. Having reached the summit, turn round and don't head for the gate you came through, instead take a right hand path heading towards the wall but downwards. This descends to the path round Castle Hill and saves a lot of effort.moorsman30/09/2021
Parked at Thrunton wood CP used forest track from there > onto Castle HillAndrew Simmons23/07/2021
Pleasant walk via castle hill. A bivvy camp on summit. Quite tidy but took a bag of rubbisk back to car.cjo15/05/2021
Parking off the road at Callaly (NU05971017). Path straight up the hill from the parking and clear paths > Castle Hill. Many paths on the ground. Descended S from Castle Hill then a clear path straight up Callaly Crag. Paths/track along > Calally Crag summit. Continued for ~800m to NU07220938 and returned on the well defined path shown on the OS map.JohnR23/10/2020
From Castle Hill - paths not as map. From CH, turn left thru' rocks to path thru' bracken at NU 06078 09692 (may be hard to find in summer). This soon improves to an excellent path all the way to the summit of Callaly Crag - amazing walk - loved it. Take torch to explore unusual cave.carole engel04/08/2019
After Castle Hill, followed red trail path to main track and made way to highest point. Top now felled. Highest point could be any of 3 points. Looks about 15 metres past the grid ref on here.Jhimmy29/03/2019
Trees have been felled in summit area. Contour to the ESE looks equally high.Adrian28/12/2018
After Castle Hill with Mrs G. Nice easy track from Castle Hill to 280m contour then E on excellent path to a pathside summit.jonglew14/10/2016
Easy parking to NW, track starting at NU 05846 10050 up into woods. Minor tracks intersect large tracks, then steep section up to top path where summit lies.Aye Jimmy30/04/2016
Castle Hill and Callaly Crag from minor road to north. Plenty of woodland tracks, most of which aren't on the OS map.Crib Goch16/01/2016
After Castle Hill. Missed path so took beeline thru bilberry pinewoods to pt280 then paths East to pt281. Back via path missed on way out - not as per 50k map but descends s direct from castle Hill thru old quarry. Nice outing on a lovely autumn morningRHW10/10/2015
On a warm & sunny April day from the car park for Thrunton Wood Walks. Followed the tracks round to the fort at Castle Hill, then back over by Callaly Crag & on across to Long Crag. Lazed around the summit for a while, then continued E & then down into the forest back to the start. Discovered that 3 ticks were feasting themselves on my legs later that evening...NotReallyABagger11/04/2007
