Extensive forestry operations have churned the surface up and left piles of brash around. Some of this brash is alongside the path preventing easy access on to the fell. The only way up I could find was to follow the Cumbria Way until it leaves the lake. Head diagonally upward and when it reaches the black dotted track, barely evident, head upwards. Tried a direct route down, which, although it worked, involved serious brash-bashing to reach the Tarn Howes track.moorsman20/05/2022

Black Fell and Holme Fell from the Glen Mary Car Park, visiting Hill Fell, Black Fell, Tom Heights, and Holme Fell. 12km with 600m ascent in 3h 30m. (S)silveracorn_alan10/07/2021
The lonely side of Tarn Hows if that isn't a contradiction in terms. From Tom Gill over the ridge is a pleasant walk on an marked path with a good view at the prominent summitclimbingkershaw19/05/2021
I did a northeast-south traverse starting just south of the gate where a path (to start with, it seemed more like a cow trod) leads to the top. It carries on but near the main Tarn Hows path it disappears under brash. I came out at SD 32848 99982 a bit to the north of the seat mentioned by Wycombe wanderer.Alan Moore08/12/2020
Only my second time up here! With Alfie. Lovely walk down to Glen Mary car park.Dangerous Dave29/02/2020

Walked over on track from Yewfield. Much forestry work, clearing out dead or dying larch trees around Tarn Hows. Ascended in low cloud and rain from a small path at the track junction to the north east. Without this path ascent through long wet bracken and rocky outcrops would have been difficult. Relieved to see the summit cairn in the poor weather.JohnW26/11/2019
From Coniston with Debs & Tali. Circuit to get the 2 local Wainwrights (Black Fell & Holme Fell) and anything else enroute. Via Skelwith Bridge for munchies then found a café at Elterwater Park farm we need to check out sometime.Mountain Goat03/11/2019
18:00 from car park. Beautiful evening. Ascended steep brackeny slopes and returned via path along ridge that emerges at bench. Perfect mini fell walk with arboreal scenery.Wycombe Wanderer09/06/2019

Started from lay-by at Hollin Bank. Took the track to Tarn Hows, and then ascended Tom Heights, great views today. From here it was on to Black Fell’s trig and then the good path to Park FellWayne Mac24/11/2018

Walked up from Lady Mary Bridge car park with M and dogs, dank drizzly and very cold. The indistinct path leaves the main Tarn Hows path just behind a NT park bench. Lovely narrow track across mini tops. Path rejoins the main track at the gate onto the Green road.Karmakarl14/01/2018

From Great How with Alf. Utterly delightful.mick02/12/2016
Rough ascent through wood and short steep fight up to my neck in high bracken, just when work rang me and I tried to have a normal conversation. The path around Tarn How was very busy, as is the norm (I overtook 2 prams) but wisely nobody followed me off piste on my route of ascent. Delighted and relieved and felt rather silly to find a path all way down from summit back to the main lake side path. Back at the car I followed the departing ice cream van all way back on narrow lanes to Bowness (lots of stop me and squeeze past if you can moments with oncoming cars).Chris Pearson12/07/2016
A small round of tumps from Tarn Hows car park: Hill Fell - Black Fell - Park Fell - Tom Heights. Quick morning romp round before the drive home to Wiltshire.jonglew05/03/2016

With Rick as per his log. First visited the Coniston OS trig bolt (passive station) a short way S along road. Last summit of the day, just before forecast rain started in earnest. The to Chesters tearoom to celebrate the earlier Section 34B completion.RHW05/07/2015
From North, A593 road parking at Cumbria way path. Used track to gate above Tarn Howes and then good path to summit.nordicstar05/07/2015
Varied and interesting walk for poor weather when cloud base is down to 1000ft, like today. Tarn Hows NT car park (free for NT members or £7.00 for the day)Hill Fell, Black Fell, Park Fell, Great How, Holme Fell (good path down to Yew Tree Tarn, went south by road a short distance to a stile in the fence then scrambled up to Tom Heights through the wood - bracken to head height in places but worst thing was the flies - you can keep your mouth shut but they still fly into your ears! Pleasant return to Tarn Hows.ijpowell26/06/2015

An interesting if somewhat complicated route bagging anything that remotely resembled a hill from the main NT car park at Tarn Hows. The fresh fall of snow impeded our progress but we still managed a hefty haul. Namely; Hill Fell, Torver Intake, Arnside Intake, Black Fell, Park Fell, Great How & Tom Heights. Not advisable in the height of summer, methinks the bracken would bite!David Gradwell17/03/2013
