| What a daft and unimaginative name for a hill, or indeed a fell. Easy ascent up double gravel track through trees from gate at end of National Trust disabled viewing car park (no we didn't park there). Obvious top with excellent views and so much quieter than the tourist path around Tarn Hows just below. | ...and splendour, splendour, everywhere! (Betjeman). What a day - ground ice hard, blue sky,snow on the higher tops,low winter sunshine and fog just below us blanketing the valleys. Quite something. Many photos and a short film taken of our strong shadows walking along cast against a parallel grassy bank - a rare combination of low sun and angled bank. | An interesting if somewhat complicated route bagging anything that remotely resembled a hill from the main NT car park at Tarn Hows. The fresh fall of snow impeded our progress but we still managed a hefty haul. Namely; Hill Fell, Torver Intake, Arnside Intake, Black Fell, Park Fell, Great How & Tom Heights. | No summit. Looking for skiable snow to try - out my new cross country skis. I thought the track around Tarn Howes might be suitable, but frustratingly the snow cover was too thin, scraping my skis on rocks and tree roots.
