From parking S of Slatterthwaite. PRoW and forest tracks | Minto | 31/12/2023 |
Started at 1pm to miss the worst of intense lengthy morning showers -replaced by lovely sunshine and rainbow showers. A fairly gruelling 20km walk/jog/ jungle fight circuit linking 9 tops (6 Tumps & 3 subs). 6hrs30m back as inky darkness fell -just. Started badly here as by mistake too casually I took the 1st left path too soon- not the row wanted further on but a forest trail - soon hit fallen trees - skirted then headed straight up. I arrived on top of Great Knott (I now know) but could not see open fields to N as expected. Odd? Came across waterfall? Odd? Map and compass work, got me back onto planned f'path, but even that was blocked by a mass of fallen trees. After some sweaty thrashing through brambles and brashings I eventually got to tarn at col. I still prefer map and compass v gps as you get to read the landscape. More bulldozed forest mess to triple tops, as the nice track up starts 100m along lake edge (found on descent) not from stream outflow as my map showed. | Chris Pearson | 03/10/2023 |
GPS had high point of Northern contour ring at 196m, high point of middle contour ring at 198m SD3306391885 and high point of Southern contour ring at 196m. Lots of detours around fallen trees. | PeteF | 14/08/2022 |
Free parking spot to the east. Followed bridleway to end of trees then an easy ascent to the obvious top of the first ridge. Across the broken wall into the trees and then to the summit. | moorsman | 17/07/2021 |
WBMC meet. Horrific last 100m through fellelled forest then through trees at top. There are 2 two tops ,unfortunately GPS had a wobbly so don't know which is higher. Did both. | DARRENG | 10/07/2021 |
From parking to east, along FP, up from high point on track through messy felled area to the various hp’s in the trees. On to Higher Thorny Slack. | PeterD | 06/07/2021 |
A lot of fun as a lot of the trees have been felled and a mess left behind. Then onto Higher Thorny Slack. | Alan Caine | 22/05/2021 |
Free small parking area to the east. Lots of felled trees on the slopes. Muddy. Visited all three potential high points. With Alfie. Descended to the lovely tarn. | Dangerous Dave | 17/05/2021 |
2/3 Parked at the church at Rusland, up the BOAT to Stricely Intake, then down to Force Mills, and used woodland tracks to reach the car park just outside Satterthwaite. Up Bridleway, and Footpath to Little Knott, then down to the tarn and worked round using tracks to Higher Thorny Stack. Lovely woodland trails between the tops. Tops not too bad. | nickywood1 | 30/05/2020 |
Bridleway from car park then approached from edge of forest to north. On to Higher Thorny Slack. | Wycombe Wanderer | 19/05/2019 |
Having fought my way up I took the time to explore the various potential high spots. I agree with Richard that SD 33024 92017 ish is the highest point, | DC11main | 02/03/2019 |
Came from the BW to the S, through the wall at the high point of the pass and onto logging tracks that passed the summit rocks. GPS altitude measured 201m, ... and 196m at alternative top on the ring contour nearer the boundary wall. | Moorponder | 04/01/2019 |
Fram small woodland CP a little S of Satterthwaite Bridge. RoW initally, then cut up through woodland to HP, another outcrop. Went on to Higher Thorny Slack. With Rick Salter. | jonglew | 19/03/2018 |
With Jon Glew | nordicstar | 19/03/2018 |
Little Knott > Higher Thorny Slack from GR: SD 33692 91972 | ronaldo333 | 01/10/2017 |
From SD331 918 an old path makes an easy rising traverse into forest and reaches ridge line. Good Deer(?) path N along the ridge accesses the potential high points. GPS considered SD 33028 92017 in the N 190m contour ring as the highest point but the S ring high point felt higher. I didn't venture into the NE ring. GPS accuracy was a poor 6m. | RichardM | 30/12/2016 |
With Jo, from Brock Crag: track via Satterthwaite to just west of summit, then 150m of mature forest. Then onto Higher Thorny Slack. Weather; misty, mild, poor visibility. | amblerbob | 18/12/2016 |
Approached from E corner of tarn keeping a little R (ENE) initially to keep in mature, less dense, forest for as long as possible. Thereafter route finding, in denser forest, not to difficult because of fairly obvious NS ridge. Not too desperate, rather relieved in fact. Descended due S for more mature forest and track back to car. | jimbloomer | 15/03/2016 |
From E, followed b/way then pasture then traversed 'ridge' N-S. AS AJ says, a few summits, but one clearly higher I thought. Dense spruce: least-worst ascent is probably from E corner of tarn which is well worth a visit. Then on to Higher Thorny Slack which was much worse... | RHW | 06/09/2015 |
Bridleway from E then lesser track to L passing magnificent tall pines. At crest of path went up into wood on right. This appears to be a ridge heading N pursued with difficulty for 250m passing several possible 'summits' before ground started to fall away. No idea which was highest. Map 1:25,000 shows lot of ground above 190m contour in three areas. Worst thrash today but at least it was dry... | Aye Jimmy | 18/04/2015 |
