This hill is owned by a state school in London! The John Roan school, whose headmaster in 1920s, Arthur Hope, bought the 38 acres of land as a camp to show youngsters the great outdoors and life outside London. Today the centre is rented out to groups which helps maintain it and subsidise trips for current youngsters from the school - for many of whom this 10 minute climb through the bracken must be their first 'mountain' summit -with fab views. For me a solo 555 linear bus walk/ jog from Thirlmere Swirls car park to Keswick along the Higg Rigg ridge on a beautiful sunny autumnal day. After an hours lunch chat and cake at Martin's house in Keswick walked / jogged the 2 miles out through Portinscale to Braithwaite, picking up Hodgson How - a P20 on the way. Then back again to Keswick for the 4.30pm 555 bus back to Troutbeck Bridge (only £2 on Govt deal) as darkness fell and bus full of school kids returning home to Grasmere & A'side. Then 30 min hike up road in dark to Troutbeck.Chris Pearson21/11/2023
Up from the path passing the Hope Memorial Hall. Pretty steep, no hope of me getting down it so I walked NW along ridge and found easier descent paths through the Bracken.nickywood109/09/2023
A quick walk up the steep track from the Hope Memorial Camp after a day on the Lord's Seat group. A stunning view from its low summit on a sunny afternoon, with the Lakes looking very colourful.silveracorn_alan13/08/2023

Parking at start of footpath to the south ... alt 413 ft. Through a gate and, for the easiest ascent, just follow good tracks winding upwards. Shortcuts possible, but not really a time saver. 0.77 miles, 20 mins return.moorsman03/03/2016
Climbed on way down from a walk up to Coledale Hause. Through a gate by Hope Memorial Camp, then steeply up on a bit of a path to the plateau, then north through a small dip and up to unmarked high point on edge of wood. Returned the same way.Man of Kernow130/01/2016
