This hill is owned by a state school in London! The John Roan school, whose headmaster in 1920s, Arthur Hope, bought the 38 acres of land as a camp to show youngsters the great outdoors and life outside London. Today the centre is rented out to groups which helps maintain it and subsidise trips for current youngsters from the school - for many of whom this 10 minute climb through the bracken must be their first 'mountain' summit -with fab views. For me a solo 555 linear bus walk/ jog from Thirlmere Swirls car park to Keswick along the Higg Rigg ridge on a beautiful sunny autumnal day. After an hours lunch chat and cake at Martin's house in Keswick walked / jogged the 2 miles out through Portinscale to Braithwaite, picking up Hodgson How - a P20 on the way. Then back again to Keswick for the 4.30pm 555 bus back to Troutbeck Bridge (only £2 on Govt deal) as darkness fell and bus full of school kids returning home to Grasmere & A'side. Then 30 min hike up road in dark to Troutbeck. | Chris Pearson | 21/11/2023 |
