From Muncaster Castle to the far side and up a trod to the fence at the edge of the wood. Easier from the Ravenglass side where we descended. | IWC | 07/05/2022 |
14/16 Could almost smell the salt air on this small hill here being just 700m from the high tide line. The Romans had a garrison on the coast here at Ravenglass for 300 years as the estuary served as a a major resupply port for NW Britain. Ascent as others up and down through lovely woodland from track row, then back for the long straight haul up Muncaster Fell. Still a hot afternoon and still on schedule (thanks to the 6.40 am start) to do 16 tops and get back to Kendal for 6pm to visit dad. | Chris Pearson | 26/03/2022 |
Ravenglass station - Barrow Crag - Hooker Crag - Muncaster Fell summit - Muncaster Castle Hill - Ravenglass. | Mark Jackson | 21/06/2021 |
1/2 Up through woodland to the East of the Hill then scramble up through woods. Back to Muncaster Castle using public footpath through the grounds to climb up to top wall, then easy to summit and enjoyable stroll back through the grounds of castle just before 6pm. Stunning views on a very hot day. | nickywood1 | 11/08/2020 |
3 degrees, sunny, calm, from Muncaster Castle car park via bridleway with Miranda. On to Muncaster Castle Hill. | Wycombe Wanderer | 01/12/2019 |
Circuit with Talisker, Barrow & Mucaster Castle Hill | Mountain Goat | 02/06/2019 |
Parked in the layby across the road from the Muncaster Castle car park. Bridleway to due east of the summit. Do not ascend here .... very steep and impossible if the ground is wet. Hands and feet climb. Instead, venture on a further 200m and then go up. Far, far easier. 40 minutes return | moorsman | 10/05/2019 |
Closest approach is from ROW within the woods to the E and steeply up. Not recommended - the original delapidated iron fence is now supplemented by a new BWF along the W boundary of the woods, running N-S just below the crest of the hill. | Isbjorn | 03/12/2018 |
Via RoW into woods then steep uphill for last 170 metres. | Dugswell2 | 19/04/2018 |

Tucked car in just off the road at SD 09244 96697.
Followed footpath for circa 200mtrs and took side track leading up to pasture then a couple of gates and hey presto. No awkward woods, just a pleasant stroll | DC11main | 29/10/2017 |
Barrow Crag from GR: SD 09784 96664 | ronaldo333 | 27/10/2017 |
From Muncaster Castle car park. ROW to highest point on track. Very steep and loose up through wood to old iron fence at field edge to high point. | John Lee | 23/10/2017 |
From Muncaster. The path through the farm no longer exists so you have to go up on the forest track then climb the steep bank and fence to gain access to the field where the summit is. It is worth it as there is a great view of the estuary. | clivevilla | 22/09/2017 |
Ascent up through wood after days of rain was interesting. Crampons & ice axes would have been handy. | ngthack | 10/09/2017 |
2nd of 2 hills today. 1st was Muncaster Castle hill from the grounds with ny daughter and then she waited in the car whole i took the footpath signed 'Esk trail' and like other hill-vaggers nade a direct ascent, stepping over fence at the top using stile to access the open pasture and then getting surrounded by sheep on the grassy top. Lovely views of the higher Cumbrian fells. | Dazingdale | 22/04/2017 |
Slithery steep ascent from path through woodland | Colin Crawford | 02/04/2017 |
Coming back down Fell Lane, veered off right on RoW, which goes through woodland on E side of farm, then steeply up a wooded bank to sheep pasture at top. | jonglew | 05/03/2017 |
