2.9 mile walk from the parking area by Helbeck Quarry south. We followed the ROW to Carry Band where there's an odd sign mentioning a Mount Ida circular walk? We left the ROW for an ATV track to the west of Carry Band. Here you have to climb a wall which isn't too hard. The barbed wire is missing in a lot of places. Up to the summit of Mount Ida. From here we headed south, re-crossed the wall easily and descended Double Scar on very steep grassy slopes. From here it's a short steep pull up to Barnarm Scar's little summit. We then followed the track back to Spoonymire Hill and ROW back to the parking area. 262m ascent. Nobody about. As others have mentioned these hills have a lot of character and deserve to be more popular. Barnarm Scar is similar to Parkhouse Hill in the Peak District. If these hills were elsewhere they would have a lot more visitors. These were the last two hills of the day. Earlier we bagged Kisdon and Tailbridge Hill.DanTrig08/07/2023
First one of April for Boo and I on a beautiful Easter Saturday. Escaping the hoards and looking down on a very packed Brough. Hill top ideal for the live version of the Lion King.Alphaville19908/04/2023
Barnarm Scar & Mount Ida from the quarry parking space. An enjoyable 2 hours when there wasn't time to do anything more significant.PGCE26/01/2023

1/2. Making use of the MOD access day today, parked at Helbeck Quarry and walked up using permissive path along to Barnarm Scar, then I visited the Fox Tower through the woods before doubling back to meet Ian who was 'wind bathing' no sun, on the summit of Mount Ida. Interesting rocky valley amongst all the peat in this area - reminded me of the valleys up behind Llangollen. Took about 1.5 hours as I was parping about due to too much gardening this week!nickywood107/08/2022

Impressive looking peak. After Ida from Quarryconanharrod24/05/2021
Quarry above Helbeck, Barnarm Scar, Mount Ida. Mount Ida defended by barbed wire topped wall running parallel to the ridge and very steep climb. I could only see one place to cross the wall where it was partly down.ijpowell30/08/2020
From Mount Ida. Impressive shape. Back to quarry.Wycombe Wanderer04/01/2020
A pleasant little walk from parking near entrance to Helbeck Quarry. Barnarm Scar then Mount Ida - lots of limestone - some scrambling. Have visited area several times - pity Fox Tower is on non-access land & no ROW.ger13/05/2019
With Mount Ida. Good parking NY 8000 1573. Accidentally mistook quarry track for BW - good short cut. Track becomes grassy track around S-side quarry. Up E edge woods to Fence where BW strand cut at NY 7967 1597. From Barnum Scar, the wall is easily crossed at NY 7963 1650 for the second excellent climb over steep grassy hills. Good walk - back same way.carole engel21/04/2019
From the quarry. Did this one first then on to Mount Ida for a nice little circuit. OS mapping shows these hills outside the Warcop Trg Area, but spotted the flag up (at NY 8023 1587) on the way down, they clearly don't expect anyone to go up the W side of the quarry. Seems when they're firing, which they were today (small arms and artillery), then the danger area gets extended. Didn't see anyone and no-one saw me, was well away from any action.jonglew07/12/2018
Mount Ida, Barnam Scar, Horse Shoe & Spoonymire Hill. Solo. An easy walk along a beautiful hidden valley to this impressive little crag.Dangerous Dave26/03/2018
With Jo, from Helbeck Quarry cp along B/W and track to Barnarm Scar. Returned to B/W and continued NW to gate that allowed access to Mount Ida. Weather; cloudy, cold wind, good visibility.amblerbob17/02/2018
Parked at Quarry, en route for trig pillar. An impressive little craggy lumpcjo27/12/2017
As others, from Quarry. Mount Ida first then VERY steep descent to Barnham Scar. Two great little hills - superb views and interesting limestone landscape. A great use of two hours.Crib Goch20/08/2017
If you are combining this hill with Mount Ida, do this second as the drop between them (hence the climb) is severe. If doing this on its own, look for a track just after the copse of trees on the bridleway from Helbeck quarry (good parking. This leads directly to the base of the hill. The track is visible from the summit and should be followed back.moorsman30/09/2015
Measured speed of sound by watching the firing at Warcop. Lovely limestone. Quarry re-openened but only impacts the start - lots of parking.jimbloomer28/09/2015
Parked at quarry to south and after visiting Mount Ida, descended steeply and initially to far west, before climbing again to this fine little summit. Returned to the east following a track that re-joined the track from the quarry.Fisky Boy05/09/2015

Steep descent from Mount Ida to green valley gives good views of the craggy N face of this little hill. Short ascent then to most unusual summit. Views to Mount Ida show interesting limestone geology.Aye Jimmy03/07/2015
This hill has a pointy top! And a hole to sit in on the sunmmitmaknipe05/01/2015
Parked past quarry entrance, ran up track to high point and followed obvious line to central top of Mount Ida. Good views, continued to Barnarm Scar - surprisingly steep ground, and what looks like a contructed hole on its top, a lookout maybe? Take direct line East back to track and start.nordicstar10/01/2014
From end of minor road one mile N of Brough at NY 79998 15735. Included with Mount Ida.David Gradwell31/10/2013
A stand alone limestone outcrop with a small summit area. No cairn but a hole 4 ft deep and 3 ft wide on the summit. An inverted cairn perhaps!peebs26/05/2013
A dawn raid before the army were up. Up easily from Hellback on track then pastures to Mount Ida, then a lovely 2km north around limestone pavements and into the firing range (all quiet) for the trig on Musgrave Scar (and a sub 4). On return angled down to climb the shapely cone of Barnham Scar. Red range flag now flying -just got in and out for Musgrave Scar in time.Chris Pearson10/06/2012
